You've got to hand it to SEGA and Sonic Team — the post-launch support for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds has been pretty great.
The premium DLC has seen the likes of Pac-Man, SpongeBob SquarePants, and Minecraft join the fun, but alongside these have been several free updates that introduce new playable characters owned by the publisher.
Well, it's now been announced that this is set to continue well into 2026:
Yes, a trio of SEGA characters have been confirmed for the kart racer, and they're some fairly unexpected choices.
We're getting Red (Angry Birds) and Goro Majima (based on his appearance in Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii) in April, with Arle (Puyo Puyo) following in May. Each character comes with their own signature set of wheels, too.
On top of these new faces joining the roster, SEGA has confirmed several new music tracks will be added to the in-game jukebox. These are:
- “MAGICAL SOUND SHOWER” by Hiro (Out Run)
- “Let’s Go Away” by Takenobu Mitsuyoshi (Daytona USA)
- “Soul on Desert” by Jun Senoue (SEGA Rally 2)
- “Like The Wind (B Course) Arcade Version” by Hiro (Power Drift)
- “Outside a Crisis” by SEGA (Katsuhiro “Funky K.H” Hayashi) (Super Hang-on)
- “Main Theme (Enduro Racer)” by Hiro (Enduro Racer)
- “God Only Knows” by A-One
- “Like the Wind (Reborn)” by Sampling Masters MEGA (Power Drift)
If you're a SEGA fan, this will all be pretty sweet news. Racing as Hatsune Miku in SpongeBob's car around the Pac-Man course while listening to Magical Sound Shower? This game's mad, in the best way.

I like that they're actual SEGA characters this time. Probably didn't need two Yakuza reps. But this roster is all over the f***in' place, so why even scrutinize the nitty gritty.
Should've had ball-form Red, though. Weird anthropomorphic movie Angry Birds are — I'm going to assume for no good reason — why the franchise is dead. At the very least, it turns fairly charming li'l guys into generic, 'whatever' cartoon birds.
Not the best character choices given the wealth of Sega characters to choose from but the music side is looking very good at least. Now how about getting the actual Sonic R soundtrack in this
Little bit upsetting that in a world with a character roster as huge as Sonic that we've only had two actual Sonic characters as dlc but I suppose this is nice too.
Free updates are cool, I hope we get more tracks though in the same way MK8 did.
@JPEGMakima in fairness, if they added more Sonic characters, I feel it’d be more annoying that they don’t have any dialogue. And I can’t think of any major Sonic character who’s been missed out this time.
Wow, the music catalogue is really cool, they even acknowledged SEGA Rally 2, which never got re-release unlike most of the other games on the music menu!
I need the MegaMan dlc now!!! Where's the release date
I'd rather have Samba, Akira, Beat, Ryo etc.
Since when was Angry Birds a Sega property, or do they own it now?
Nice to see some Puyo Puyo representation, but Kiryu would have been preferred imo.
