Build a Rocket Boy, the studio behind the critical and commercial flop MindsEye, is reducing its staff once more.
The news comes via a statement on LinkedIn from CEO Mark Gerhard, who says an undisclosed number of staff members are being made redundant in the wake of the game's disastrous launch last year.
Gerhard says it's a "deeply painful decision" and assures those affected they will be supported as they look for new work.
"To everyone affected – thank you. Your work and creativity helped shape this studio and we will do everything we can to support you in finding your next opportunity. My thoughts today are first and foremost with the people leaving the team. We will also be sharing details of affected team members with communities that actively support developers during transitions, to help connect people with new opportunities."

While it's sad to see layoffs continue to proliferate throughout the industry, Gerhard's statement lays a lot of blame for the studio's situation, and MindsEye's unsuccessful launch, on "criminal activity".
"As leaders we take responsibility for the outcomes of our projects and the decisions that follow. At the same time, the launch period was affected by factors beyond normal operational challenges and a competitive environment," the statement reads.
It goes on to describe an ongoing investigation with "external partners and legal advisors" to get to the bottom of a targeted conspiracy against MindsEye.
"That work has taken far longer than expected, but it has now resulted in overwhelming evidence of organised espionage and corporate sabotage affecting MindsEye," Gerhard says. "Because this matter is moving toward prosecution, we cannot share the full details publicly yet."
The reaction to the statement has been quite negative, with many people unhappy to see the announcement of layoffs paired with the investigation.
MindsEye launched in June 2025 and was met with the lowest review scores of the year. Sony was even approving refunds of the game on PS Store, something it only does in extreme cases.
Even before the game's launch, Gerhard said there was a "concerted effort" to "trash the game".
It's a bit of a mess, isn't it? We wish all the best to those affected by the layoffs.

Worst studio ever. Wouldn’t support this game even for 5 bucks.
It’s sad for the talented devs that put their effort into the projects and got wasted.
In the unrelated news, bunch of construction workers that built an unlivable building that fel down a week later got all fired. How sad…
Just shut it down already
The next time I play Monopoly and lose, I’m going to spend years constantly reminding everyone how there was a conspiracy against me from Hasbro itself.
My thoughts go out to those affected, but based on what I've seen of it, it would've required the biggest conspiracy in the history of gaming for anybody to have said anything remotely positive about it.
Next time I stub my toe I'll blame it on Rockstar too.
I recently reread the interview the leaders of BARB did with Edge Magazine about their platform Everything and Mindseye. In hindsight they were focusing on the completely wrong things, pie in the sky ideas, bloat, and just seemed like leadership thought they'd be able to burn cash indefinitely. I highly doubt we'll ever see a court case about the conspiracy, seems like a pretty obvious distraction tactic
I could understand these kind of comments if there was actually a disparity between what critics & reviews said about the game and what players thought, but the general consensus is that the game is just plain bad. Sad that more people are losing their jobs over it, but just accept you made a subpar product and move on.
Love how he still talks about conspiracy to trash the game, rather than just admit they created a trash game that should never have been released.
I would love to interview the guy and ask how far and wide the conspiracy goes. So Rockstar paid everyone in the internet, including everyone on this site to call the game trash even though we secretly loved it according to him? 😑
I saw they added a trial for this game to PS Premium. A part of me is morbidly curious, but I can't even bring myself do download the file package. Even that seems like too much effort for this game.
Still cant believe they're trying to blame others for releasing their poorly made game, trying to accuse a youtuber who they invited to a preview who came back and said the game's jank, which it still was on release lol
I never heard of Leslie Benzies prior to this game’s marketing. I enjoyed MindsEye for what it was, but it definitely wasn’t the right way to try to launch a service platform.
Still excited about the redemption arc, though!
Soon we'll see Mark Gerhard in a straitjacket screaming: "Harrison Ford is irradiating our testicles with microwave transmissions!"
But-but-but it’s the studio founded by the lead developer GTA! Surely that would outweigh dated lack of vision, dated gameplay and non-existing marketing!
Or so I was told by other commenters here pre-release🥲
Good luck to all the people being laid off. Again underlines the importance of assessing the leadership before accepting a job offer.
These evil forces even manipulated Gerhard‘s mind, resulting in the stupid idea to create a low-budget GTA-like by using the tools UE5 offers in a quick-and-dirty way.
It wasn’t Gerhard‘s fault!
You made a bad game, that's all
Oh so the game was actually good but a coordinated conspiracy made people think they actually weren’t having fun playing the game? Got it

'Targetted conspiracy against mindseye' your game was worse that shi*te mate, wind yer neck in
@DartLOD Seems to me that a lot of people just went along with the memes instead of actually playing it.
@Propaperpusher have I missed something, what has this crap got to do with sony, they refunded the game like they did with cyberpunk, thats a good thing
@ButterySmooth30FPS are you ok
Conspiracy 😂😂😂 Sorry mate but you made a crap game that was also buggy as hell. Take responsibility for your own shoddy work

Can't roll my eyes hard enough at him still going on about this whole conspiracy being the reason the game didn't sell.
@lazarus11 I think so? I don’t believe there was any kind of conspiracy against this game, but that’s not to say that online people are always honest. Plenty of folks like to have opinions about things they have no familiarity with.
Really tired of all this "But poor devs" bullcrap. If a restaurant will serve you a burned meal with cockroaches in it, will you stand up for the staff and blame it all on suits?
@ButterySmooth30FPS this is true , I haven't subjected myself to playing it , i have seen enough videos though to make the decision that the game was fu*k*d up
I think more significant then anything, buddy, your game launched in a really bad state. No conspiracy about that, it was just a fact.
@Dalamar you’ve hit the nail on the head for the broader market. All these layoffs are largely because these companies keep making games that people don’t want. For example, sites like this one, rubbed it in our faces that AC Shadows was not a flop. How’s it going for Ubisoft? Where is all the dlc for the hot selling game? Instead of insulting the customers maybe listen to them.
Mindseye is the biggest worst game since Rise of the Robots
But is it any good now? A redemption arc was promised.
What a tool, you were given money and opportunity, and you screwed it so bad game was laughed at from day one, conspiracy against the game 🤣🤣🤣🤣, their basically saying we can't be bothered fixing the game and forget about that redemption arc, and no before people go off.." oh poor devs lose their job" so what...clearly alot of them are incompetent, and also if you lost your job tomorrow thinkd they'd care?
I'm sure it's a planetary wide brainwash system that made everyone hate the objectively best game ever made named MindsEye. You can only enjoy it with a tin foil hat.
I don't know if there's any weight to all the corporate sabotage, espionage, criminal activity stuff... but I do think issuing a public statement about redundancies that was 70% excuses and conspiracy theories was in bad taste. Save that stuff for a different post at a different time when people's livelihoods are not on the line.
