I was about to sleep last night when I saw a strange report circulating on social media: Sony is set to scrap the PSN branding.
While not confirmed by the company – this communication, it seems, was only intended to be shared with devs for now – it comes from a good source and seems legit to me.
So, the immediate question knocking around my brain as I plunged into the land of nod was a simple one: why?
When I woke up this morning, I wanted to check something on Push Square: when did we last use the PSN acronym in one of our headlines?
Subscribe to Push Square on YouTube168k
It was Christmas Day, when I wrote about the PSN servers holding steady over the holidays.
Before that? PSN stabilising after a global Amazon outage.
And the time before? PSN exhibiting issues in October.

In fact, what I found was pretty much any time we’ve referenced PSN over the past few years, it’s been in reference to server issues or outages.
This made me realise one thing: the PSN moniker hasn’t really been relevant for some time. We only ever talk about it when the service goes offline.
Heck, when was the last time you actually paid attention to PSN’s logo? And did you realise Sony actually changed it over a decade ago?
I think PSN as a concept made more sense when online gaming was in its infancy. On the PS3, for example, it wasn’t always assumed a title would have online functionality, so it made sense to promote it.
PSN was also used as a way to differentiate between “retail” and “digital” games, but those lines have now completely blurred. There’s no such thing as a “downloadable” release anymore, right? That’s everything.

I think what we used to consider PSN is just a Sony account these days. It’s possible the company will try to merge it with more of its services; I’m sure the wider Sony family wishes it had access to the full breadth of PlayStation’s userbase.
I know this is something the company tried to do before, when it briefly rebranded as PSN as Sony Entertainment Network. That name never really caught on, did it?
But I think PSN as a concept doesn’t really exist anymore, and that’s evidenced by all of our recent articles about it. Like I said, we only ever use the name when Sony’s servers are down – not ideal for the organisation, I’m sure.
I suppose eventually we’ll just start writing “PS5 Offline” or whatever. Or maybe the PSN moniker will stick with longtime fans, even if Sony no longer acknowledges it.
It’s weird because, on the surface, retiring the PSN name felt like big news to me. But when I really paused to think about it, I realised it hasn’t really been a thing for quite some time.
What do you think of Sony’s decision to scrap the PSN name? What difference do you think this will make moving forwards? Will you continue to use the moniker after it’s gone? Let us know below.

Sammy, that dash board is... very you 🤣
I'll still call it PSN..always have. It literally makes no difference to me either way truth be told.
I’ll still call it PSN. It’s not a big deal anyway.
Sony's PlayStation Gaming System Online Infrastructure and Customer Facing Retail e-commerce Services
Rolls right off the tongue
Removed - unconstructive feedback
Just a name change its no difference like cif and jif or marathon and Snickers it's all the one just a rebrand.
@Enuo it's in keeping with most of the news this week..
Mate, I still call Cif "Jif".
A rose by any other name would smell as sweet
@KendoHead Exactly dude!
Not gonna sugar coat it here. The further I read into this article the more I couldn't shake the feeling this was a script sent out by Sony and paid news outlets to push to try and convince readers "hey look we only use it when it's negative so might as well retire it anyways". I could care less what they want it called but I will tell you it is literally everywhere on the internet. When people complain about the psn dashboard, or when they say anyone know a better way to sort when scrolling through the psn store etc... So good luck! I am sure when us that were around when the PS3 dropped all pass on Sony will get what it wants.
It is a nice shorthand for "Sony's online infrastructure," but ultimately, it doesn't really matter all that much. Acronyms are always fun, though.
Who can forget the "Bi-Angular Directionally-Assisted Stapling System"? /s
Hey if it goes down, PSN is down. Not my PS5, not my PS3, not my account, not Playstation Plus, but PSN.
They should call it Sony Network. Wonderful name and really sticks (I'm being sarcastic, y'all)
Really depends on the new name. I don't think a change is necessary but if it's an agreeable enough name it's fine. If it's unwieldy nonsense it will be a bad move.
Synergy with the larger Sony behemoth is meaningless to me, I don't use or care about anything else they do as a company. Maybe others care about singular branding.
@Globo marathon? Tracker and marathon were two completely different things here in UK. both both loved by squizzles.
so what are we supposed to say when we want to add ppl irl ? “what’s your playstation name ?”
lol i guess . i’m still gonna say what’s your psn, just like i still call X, twitter
To me, PSN is associated more with account services, passwords, payments and other technical stuff than anything else. I still ask people ‘What’s your psn name?’ if I happen to have a gaming related conversation with someone in real life.
@nomither6 Took 17 comments for an X-Twitter post so you win. 😁
Just realized I don't have anything else to add.😂
Xbox Live was really excellent branding.
@Slideaway1983 Yup I got that one wrong my dude come to think of it trackers are lovely I love the nutty chocolate one are they still out??
Its probably gonna be PlayStation Connected or PlayStation Online.
@rjejr 😂
It won’t change anything for me. But it’s an iconic brand name so it’s not the best idea. It will lead to a more unified system, with them trying to sell anime and movies etc, but this won’t be a great thing for the service.
@Haruki_NLI As an acronym, that rolls right off the tongue.
So, what is the new name of PSN?
Online gaming will be part of PS Plus, as it‘s the case already (F2P games ignored).
Purchasing games online will be part of PS Store, as it’s the case already.
„PSN is down“ we will call „PS services are offline“.
Look at the screenshot of the PS5 interface: The two online services PS Plus and PS Store have their own permanent and very prominent buttons.
„PS Plus“ was strengthened by integrating PS Now, which helped to make it easier to understand these services; PS Now was pretty confusing in the end. With the elimination of „PSN“, the brand „PS Plus“ will get strengthened even more.
I'll always call it the PSN, I've never used twitter but still call it twitter. I will make sure to hold onto some PSN/card boxes for the novelty. I need to keep something with the brand name.
PSN, SEN, whatever. Nothing change for me.
It sounds too close to too pissin' & we all know Sony hates piss associated with their products😅
If PSN name is removed what will you say the next time there is a technical problem, 'the PlayStation Online outage has stabilised?' I think PSN is a good description of the network infrastructure but can see why it might not be needed as branding.
The name is the least important part, the real question is what happens if PlayStation Online offers many different content types; gaming, movies, anime, does this make it better value or does the weakest element degrade the whole service and dilute its messaging?
@Oram77 sammy is our heavenly waifu lord, all must kneel before him.
Our PS Dashboard look very similar!
SEN (Sony Entertainment Network) still is the name of the account system, I figure that branding is just going to become universal. Gets the same point across I guess, PSN or SEN immediately tells you the backend is down and you can't connect online.
Me and my mates all call it PSN and probs always will
@nomither6 what do i tell my bank when i ask for a new debt card cause my PSN account has been hijacked for the second time?
I hope they kill off the yellow D-Pad, i find it ugly. But i would like a simple term of just PlayStation Store, Playstation Online.
Yes Ma’am my Playstation online account has gotten data breached again, can you send a new debt card in the mail. Don’t worry the men from Japan bowed to me in form of apologizing.
.
My problem with PSN is it only seems like it's connection to my console is a mere hope or suggestion. Like a cat. I can tell it to buy games or even to start downloading games. Doesn't mean it is going to happen.
They’ll simply call it “PlayStation” then they’ll go around saying everything’s a PlayStation
The sceptic in me thinks that whatever the reason, they'll try to spin it as some form of "Improvement" and find a way to charge us more for the privilege.
It's very 2026 that the top priority they're making is to rebrand the PSN moniker!
Store gifting to your friends?, Steam style refunds instead of the vague "case by case" & stated policies of "if you downloaded it, you bought it",but try our chat bot support if you're in a territory with stronger consumer laws & you may reach someone!!
Being serious, yes we've seen some small wins like displaying of previous prices & wishlisting to a degree when it doesn't bug out. Very welcome....but the glacial speeds of actual tangible improvements vs the actual age of the overall Playstation storefronts over multiple generations has been ridiculously slow vs the prices & changes they've applied like PS Plus etc. And not many wins for the players in terms of features either!
When you buy a gif card/code to top up your PS Store credit, that's called a PSN top-up (at least in my country).
BTW, WTF is this...? 🫣
@HonestHick haha, i haven’t my card saved with psn for years 😂
to be fair though, at least it was free
I thought sony got rid of the name years ago. We all still called it PSN.
It'll always remind me of the early days of online PS3 gaming. Calling All Cars at that time was great fun and I made a few friends through it. Warhawk also comes to mind. Now there's an IP that could be resurrected.
It's the Network for your PlayStation- I mean it does exactly what it says on the tin! It has been and always will be the PSN.
Probably doing it so they can force you to subscribe to stuff that you don't want and hike the PS+ price a bit while killing the Vita and PS3 stores.
Unfortunately for Sony, the PS4 is the fly in the proverbial ointment as any change they'd need to carry across to the old stager.
Don't care. Just make sure it works as intended and it can be called whatever
YES!! Thank you!! I’ve had it in my head for years that they were going to change it to Sony Entertainment Network (SEN) before yet it never seemed to happen, always thought I’d dreamt it 😂 at least this article now proves I’m not going crazy … ok, too crazy 🤪
What's the point in rebranding a name that's already established? Microsoft does this stuff all the time and unless you're savvy or familiar with the product or service in question, it just adds to confusion to most consumers.
@sanderson72
This. It's clear while distinguishing itself. It explains the function. It already became ubiquitous
Because it will become redundant when the consoles are gone. They are getting a jump on it now.
I'll die before I call it X; it's Twitter. I'll die before I call it Xbox Network; it's Xbox Live. I'll die before I call it the Department of War; it's the Department of Defense. And I'll die before I call whatever asinine new name they come up with; it'll always be Playstation Network.
Both MS and Sony are shifting for future-proofing, imo.
I know it's not popular opinion among many gamers but PlayStation and Xbox are no longer "consoles" but "platforms" that encompass more than just the console. You buy a PlayStation game anywhere, you signing in to PlayStation The Platform, not some spinoff product.
Regardless recent news/rumors, Sony is still pushing service games into PC and they don't want people thinking they are connecting to "PlayStation's Network" but to "PlayStation The Platform".
Even in consoles, the Network thing is no longer Optional but part of the overall platform.
The "optional" thing is the Plus subscriptions.
TLDR: it makes sense, honestly.
I couldn’t decide between “I don’t care” and “I’ll still call it PSN.” Both can be true.
@Globo I think you can still sometimes find em in budget stores. Don't hold me to that though. Used to love them all but the peanut ones were pukka.
@Northern_munkey Same here what does it even matter. PSN is something that it what im used to like Twitter and X ok maybe not like that X is just a stupid name.😅
@ElkinFencer10 X is a worse version of Twitter god i only go on there if i really need too. The things on Twitter now are depraved.
@sanderson72 Mate i think i have have you in my friendlist. 😅
@Robocod I am a big Sony fan but man the store has always been a nightmare. A three year old can design a better one.
People will probably still call it PSN, especially in the UK. This is the country that, when Lidl came over here, we pronounced it "liddle". Then when Lidl started doing TV ads and essentially said that it's actually pronounced "leedle", we as a country collectively said "the f**k it is!" and carried on saying "liddle".
I've also still been calling Utilita Arena Cardiff the Cardiff International Arena for decades despite it having gone through several name changes.
It's PSN to me. Always will be.
Insert Sword Art Online mirror item changes characters to real life faces scene here. That how I read it, but it's just a PSN name change not user one. XD See this is where I get confused and don't really care.
PS+ rebrand I think was fair, PS Now was something but PS+ works for this, but do they have to change every single thing for a rebrand? No it's just silly.
So what by saying SEN it means they are more connected, less embarrassed/less separation, like I care, it's not confusing.
We know companies would do that user angle next and we'd all hate it for sure.
But for a network name change sure, I don't care for platforms in that way and I think the original name was fine, to the point and more, it worked, why change it, oh it's old sounding, but who cares it gets to the point, that's what it's supposed to do, we changing PlayStation numbering to PlayStation 2026 next? I'd hate if they did, that would be terrible. Even when it's PS Cloud or whatever. I still don't care. I'd pull away as I already don't care for many games or services changes, a name means changes, I don't have high hopes for this, so I'd pass.
Names have a place/purpose, Sony Computer Entertainment to Interactive made sense, but this is just stupid.
Is the name change to make it easier for newcomers? Is it because they have a mentality change? We getting worse services?
Still bad navigation/UI design?
We getting major changes. I hope not.
We getting a 'dropping the PS4/5 network' focus? Them changing it for PS6, which why? The point of dropping the PS3/Vita one was to make PS4+ the future proofing so what is the point?
All assumptions here really.
@Robocod agreed, though previous sales being 30 days is nothing, the sales change every 2 weeks or vary for other sales, it needs improvement for 3 months or longer, other then that the rest I agree with.
Doesn’t really matter to me. Xbox rebranded XBL years ago. I do think there is some merit to the future proofing argument. They won’t do it with the PS6, but I could see Sony going the hybrid PC/console route with the PS7, especially if either the Steam Machine or Helix does well. It makes more $ sense for Sony to not have to “support” the console ecosystem with exclusivity.
They'll change the name but I'll probably keep calling it PSN, because it's related to PS, the majority if people created that account to use the PS store and play online.
I wonder what is the reason they'll change the name, unless they are making Sony Pictures Core available to more countries and are merging both under one brand but that still doesn't make sense since the subscription is separate from the PSN and their phones are niche?!!
