Gearbox Software has announced the first big piece of Borderlands 4 DLC, titled Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned, shall launch later this month on 26th March 2026. It adds more story missions, a new Vault Hunter called C4SH to play as, and another zone to explore.
Here's the expansion's setup:
As a malicious cosmic entity threatens Kairos, and madness lingers on the frigid wind, players will join forces with the plucky, take-no-mess Ellie — mechanic extraordinaire and daughter of Moxxi — on a quest to destroy an alien monolith and enter the accursed Vault of the Damned. Guided by the returning peculiar proprietor Mancubus Bloodtooth, players will brave the icy wastes of The Whispering Glacier, a frozen expanse littered with the husks of derelict ships and dark secrets.
In order to start playing the DLC, it's recommended that you're at least level 13, and you need to have completed the "A Lot to Process" mission to access it. Alternatively, you can skip straight to the expansion as a pre-made Vault Hunter at level 13 from the main menu.
A significant Borderlands 4 update also rolls out alongside the additional content, which will add a shared progression across characters feature, meaning "map progression, SDU tokens, Hover Drives, cosmetic rewards, and activity progression" are all shared across a single account.

Then there's C4SH, the new Vault Hunter. This is a playable CasinoBot equipped with a magical deck of cards. "This would be a cursed trophy for most people, but for a robot who has been able to game the solar system’s casinos and battlefields with statistical knowledge, he finally knows what unpredictability feels like. For the first time, he feels human. This drives him to play nothing safe, always bet on himself, and take as many risks as possible." In action, this translates to abilities based around C4SH's deck of cards, which can utilise random spells.
Will you go back to Borderlands 4 for this DLC? Let us know in the comments below.

I kinda fell off Borderlands 3 like 80% of the way through it after platinuming 2 and TPS. Probably a good idea waiting for this to be fully done before grabbing it cheap too, I’d rather have a choice of all the Vault Hunters.
I was just thinking of B4 the other day. Really feels like this game came and went faster than most AAA titles. I've heard next to nothing about it since it released, which is odd since the series sells well. I wonder how it did.
At first glance I thought that was a new Evil West announcement or Evil West DLC. I forgot Borderlands 4 existed. As with most of their DLCs I tend to wait until they've released a couple and then just head back to the game, rather than dipping in and out as they release new content.
@MFTWrecks 2m sales compared to 3's 5m. I've not really heard anyone bring it up since launch and even then it was mainly negative.
Is this game performance still bad or has it been fixed now?
Its been a struggle for my wife and I to finish the base game, and that's even with us ignoring the side quests. For Borderlands 1 and 2, we did everything. For 3, The Pre-Sequel and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, we still did a good dose of the side content. But 4?...UGH. Its not a terrible game by any means, but I won't be picking up the DLC in the future, let alone a Borderlands 5.
I'm really excited to try out C4SH. I fell in a little bit of a hole where after putting in dozens and dozens of hours on both Rafa and Vex, I finally put the game down for what I thought would be a few days, a week tops, to catch up on the other games I was ignoring. I haven't really been able to get back, so this will be the perfect motivation. Excited to see how C4SH plays!
Bring it on; after getting all 4 toons to level 50, cabt wait to play as C4SH - hoping he's the new claptrap as that class has been sorely missing since TPS for me.
@MFTWrecks I am a fan of tge franchise and have been since day 1.
With following people online that stream etc on it, it did well and then fell off a cliff. Gearbox have continued to do support similar to BL3 which was also sub par. There's currently only one raid boss, and not much else to replay. However, there have been 2 "bounty packs" (around 1-2 hours playtime) which generally weren't too bad, with more to come, as well as checks and balances / buff and nerfs every week with a "big" update with the new stuff once a month.
Unfortunately, due to the problems and not learning from BL3 a lot of the player base are leaving in droves from what ive read with maybe half saying theyre done perhaps, and half happy to come back with the DLC.
Even as a fan, it's been a lackluster launch window, but with some good support all in all.
It seems it was released as a "christmas game" just to sell units, whereas if they'd have left it til say easter with a much more clear roadmap, maybe us fans would have been more happy in general.
edit
Just for clarity, I was more than happy with the game even at full price. It was better than 3 in the way it plays and the story. Still no BL2 though which I highly doubt there will be a better one now. I personally also had next to no game breaking bugs, and ive got all characters as I said above to level 50; so its not like I didnt enjoy it, as ive sunk so much time into it.
