Like all companies of its size and scope, Sony is in the habit of acquiring patents for a wide range of new concepts, some of them more sensible than others.
One that's been recently discovered presents the idea of bespoke gaming podcasts, generated by AI technology, hosted by characters from games you've been playing.
Using a large language model (LLM), each user would be presented with a unique podcast that aims to inform them about news related to the platform they're using and the games they've been playing.
For example, you might be informed about software updates, new DLC for your games, activity from your friends, and more.
These podcasts could even be hosted by characters from your games, with potential for unusual crossovers. We suppose there's some novelty in Kratos and Lara Croft conversing about new features in your console's latest firmware update.
The patent suggests that current gaming platforms "lack the ability to provide unique and targeted content to gamers to update the gamers about things that are happening on the platform", and that this is a potential solution to that problem.
This seems like an escalation of what's already present on PS5. Currently, the PS5 is capable of showing you news and updates related to the games you're playing or otherwise interested in, as well as friend activity and so on.
However, unless you go looking for it via the Activity Card system or the widgets on the Welcome screen, it isn't very forward-facing.
A scenario presented in the patent application is that a user may receive a notification when booting their system that informs them of a new podcast being available, and from there they can choose to listen to or watch it.
As with all patents, this is not necessarily something that will be taken any further. Many patents aren't carried forward into finished products or features, so there's every likelihood these AI-generated podcasts will remain a figment of Sony's imagination.
