Team Ninja's Masaki Fujita, director of the recently released Nioh 3, has shared his thoughts on another Souls-like action RPG that was a source of inspiration for the game.
In an interview with PC Gamer, Fujita cites Lies of P as having inspired him with regards to the bosses in particular.
He says Team Ninja's other games since the release of Nioh 2 have taught the team valuable lessons. For example, experience making Rise of the Ronin contributed to improvements in the studio's approach to open-ended design in Nioh 3.

But it was Lies of P that provided Fujita with some creative inspiration, thanks to its varied boss designs, and animations that make the most of those designs.
"In addition to [Lies of P's] solid action that requires careful use of guarding and evading, I really had a lot of fun in the battles against the bosses, who had a wide variety of designs. In particular, the bosses' attack actions made full use of their distinctive designs, so it was great stimulation in giving me inspiration when thinking about the yokai actions in Nioh."
Lies of P was released by Neowiz in 2023 to widespread acclaim, with many declaring it the best Souls-like not made by FromSoftware. Its atmospheric world, unique mechanics, and rock solid action secured it as a favourite among fans of action RPGs.
Turns out Fujita loves it too, and it may have indirectly helped shape Nioh 3.

I can see the inspiration. I’ve defeated up to 10 bosses now, and some of them felt like muscle memory from when I was playing Lies of P. It’s been a brilliant, but grueling experience thus far.
I tried the demo but didn't finish it. I think I'm getting to old for modern souls likes. I've lost the willingness to run against the same boss for 100 of tries. Also normal enemies that can 2 shot you and stuff like that. For me bloodborne is till the peak of this genre but then again tastes differe and Lies of P aswell as Nioh bring unique stuff to the table. Currently waiting to see how the new lords of the fallen will end up.
Haha. If only it was as good. Also visually this is the worst looking open world game I’ve seen on ps5
Completed the demo and enjoying the main game afterwards.
(Yes, I received my reward helmet)
So far, I have encountered no Lies of P similar (or inspired) boss (yet). Maybe they are in the remaining part of the map.
I'll continue to enjoy the game. Therefore, not gonna rush.
It is so much fun to help people (in expedition and also in co-op)
Thank you Team Ninja.
@Leeg Haha, Lies of P is ass to begin with, so what does that say about Nioh 3?
Lies of P was a Bloodborne clone right down to a side quest giver being a tearful silhouetted figure behind a frosted window. Nioh isnt perfect but it certainly has its own unique personality.
Dear friend @Simu001
Did you know that you can invite other players to your world and easily beat the enemies?
Both, co-op and expedition is so much fun.
Good on Team Ninja. Glad Nioh 3 is doing as well as it is. It’s also the best example of why FF7 remake part 3 is going to be fully multiplatform day one. It’s already beaten Nioh 2’s record handily.
Yeah lies of p is amazing. Nioh. Remnant from the ashes. Lies of p.and black myth wukong are the best non from software souls like games.word up son
Fully utilizing an enemies’ design to inform its move set is something I feel Nioh has always done well but it’s nice to see the team continue to derive inspiration from the best of the genre. Still need to get to the LoP DLC!
I can definitely tell they took inspiration from Lies of P, and even Elden Ring, in some of the boss fights. But I'm having a blast with Nioh 3.
@Simu001 If you focus on the open field stuff to level up and then do the story stuff it becomes much easier. Its actually very easy to over level and steamroll a lot of the early stage bosses.
Enjoying Nioh 3 so far, but I can’t say that any of the bosses have really made much of an impact on me like Lies of P’s did.
Haven't played Lies of P yet i plan to in the future some point, I am playing Nioh 3 currently and its by far the easiest of the 3 so far, so maybe Lies of P will be easy,.theres so many weapons and abilities in nioh 3 to basically stunlock the hell out of boss's its almost funny sometimes, great game, more of the same but better refined
@Uromastryx Lies of P for me was a bargain bucket version of Bloodborne. Overrated in the extreme.
But like many things, that's subjective and the only way you'll know for sure is try it out.
Lies of P, when coupled with the amazing Overture DLC, is in my opinion probably the best Soulslike ever made - and that includes Fromsofts games. An excellent choice to take inspiration from.
@MrPeanutbutterz I think you should gove it another go, especially the DLC, game stood alone in my opinion.
@Attheendwearrive Nope, ascending that clocktower was one of the worst stages I can remember in a videogame.
Lies of P would have been a 10 out of 10 game for me but I didn't like the story. It almost reminded me of Pinocchio.
@Leonardo_Turtles : It IS Pinocchio, both story-wise (a loose adaptation of the 1883 novel The Adventures of Pinocchio) and protagonist-wise.
