Anyone with fond memories of PS1 classic Star Wars Episode 1: Racer will want to keep their eye on the newly-revealed Star Wars: Galactic Racer, a new racing title for PS5 that's releasing next year. Catch the reveal trailer above.
In this all-new entry, you'll be racing across familiar locations like Jakku and Ando Prime, using landspeeders and bikes. With the tease of Sebulba right at the end of the trailer, there's probably going to be some podracing too.
It's being developed by Fuse Games, which is a new studio formed out of ex-Criterion staff. On the Star Wars website, Lucasfilm Games executive Douglas Reilly said the new team proposed the idea to the company, and it was seen as a "no-brainer" to proceed. "I can't think of any other studio better suited to bring Star Wars racing back to our fans."

This was my, "who wanted this?" moment of the TGAs
This is looking good.
I would rather a new Wipeout or F Zero game but this might fill the void.
@charbtronic ...quickly followed by, "brilliant, can't wait to play", right?
@charbtronic Me, I wanted this.
Now THIS is podracing
@Ooccoo_Jr @jacko11 to each their own I guess.
I'd hold my breath. I can see this one being shallow at launch and if unsupported fall off.
This will be great if done right! I’ve wanted a full remake for episode 1 racer form the n64 for ages, can’t beat arcade style racing games
VR2 option please 😬!
@charbtronic Me
Any word on VR for this? Something like this game would finally make me break down and buy a PSVR2.
@GeeEssEff I think we'd all prefer a new Wipeout but Sony seems to have lost the knack ever since dissolving Studio Liverpool.
Looks great! F zero, Episode 1 racer, EGX, used to love all those games! I want this.
@charbtronic Me
@charbtronic Maybe you are too young to remember Episode 1 Racer back on the N64, that game was awesome.
My wife and I got married in 1999, and we used to play Podracer or Mario Kart on the N64 to determine who would do the dishes etc. Most fun decision making tool ever!
We won’t need this game for that-it is now clearly me (or the kids!). 😃
Get in. Used to love pod racing on N64.
Can’t wait for this
Not a big Star Wars fan but as a racing game this shows promise
Hope its Unreal Engine as I'd love to play this in UEVR!
More pre-rendered slop that tells us nothing.
Not opposed to this type of racer, especially those who don't have a Switch and can't play the Fast series of games (the latest one was mediocre though).
But at this point the licence is dragging it down, rather than selling it.
Better to create a new IP or speak to Sony about using Wipeout.
@charbtronic WipEout fans, F-Zero fans, Star Wars fans?
I hear there's quite a few of the latter.
Pics look cool. Now we wait for gameplay footage
@charbtronic on your own, mate
I'll play this, but my dream of a Burnout 3/Revenge remaster or new Burnout (in the STYLE of those--not Paradise) keeps slipping further away.
One of my favourite announcements. Really looking forward to seeing more of this.
@sanderson72 No they lost the Knack when they closed Japan studio…sorry bad joke, that’s enough internet for today
‘ In this all-new entry, you'll be racing across familiar locations like Jakku and Ando Prime…’ 🤨
So stoked for this. Loved pod racer on my n64 back in the day
@Veritas7Ax we share a similar dream! Although my ideal "reboot" / remaster / remake scenario would be Burnout 2 & 3. They were arcade racing at its peak.
Unfortunately I found Revenge too easy since they added the traffic checking... It required far more skill when you couldn't just plough through most of the traffic in your travelling direction 🙈
In the absence of a new WipEout game this definitely looks interesting. It's crying out for VR functionality though! 🤞🏻
Just take my money now frankly. Some real nonsense gets remade - this is the kind of nostalgic revival I want!
Haven’t seen anyone talking about the fact that this appears to be a roguelite of sorts. How do you all feel about that? Personally, as someone who isn’t keen on the genre, I’m getting pretty tired of its saturation at this point. Seems everything is either a roguelite, a metroidvania, or some kind of battle royale/ multiplayer shooter.
I mean if they included multiple types of races (car, pod, spaceship) and maybe some sort of plot. Meh, still just another Star Wars game with a new coat of paint.
I hope it let us try spinning. That's a good trick!
Did you know all the best Star Wars games are vehicular and that’s going way back.
"Anyone with fond memories of PS1 classic Star Wars Episode 1: Racer"
Episode I Racer was an N64 classic Liam.
Star Wars Episode I: Racer, aside from the visuals, still holds up today. I had loads of fun replaying it in PS4 and Xbox One. Bought it on Switch too but haven’t played it yet.
If this can take that gameplay and add a Burnout spice to the flavour with the Star Wars license, I’m all in.
@Sweetz Yeah, such a shame it never came. Pretty much every format back then but PS1.
@Bob_Tempura
Oh that's awesome! Kindred spirits. Hmm, perhaps I should check out Burnout 2 then. I started with 3 so never experienced anything before it.
But yeah, still holding out some slim hope. Some day. Thankfully I still have a working PS2 slim.
@Veritas7Ax I suspect you'll probably love Burnout 2, but FYI there's no takedowns, they were introduced in 3... Burnout 2 is straight arcade racing, but my god is it good. I have fond memories of chaining burnouts while staring at the road in the horizon watching for traffic up ahead. When you complete a race still boosting on that very first burnout from the start chefs kiss
It would really make the perfect pairing with Burnout 3 for a remake/remaster compilation as they're the best two games showing both sides of the series. If you do get a chance to play, I hope you enjoy!
