EA Sports and Codemasters have been churning out yearly Formula One games for a while now, and it looks like it's time for a shake up.
The publisher has announced its plans for the next couple of years of the franchise, and in a nutshell, it's skipping a new, standalone game in 2026, instead opting to overhaul the series for a big return in 2027.
The 2026 season won't go completely unrepresented, however, as a paid expansion for F1 25 will be released in lieu of a full new game.
"Today, EA SPORTS confirms future plans for F1 25, with the game set to represent both the 2025 and 2026 FIA Formula One World Championships," reads the update on the official website. "This news drops alongside an announcement for the future of EA SPORTS F1 as 2027 will see the series return and mark the start of a new and more expansive F1 experience."
The expansion will bring the 2026 season's "new cars, sporting regulations, teams, and drivers" to F1 25. It's not known at this point how much the expansion pack will cost.
"The decision to offer a premium content update for F1 25 is part of a strategic reset for the F1 Franchise," reads the update. "In 2027, a new game will be released that looks, feels, and plays differently, delivering more gameplay choices."
The 2027 game "reimagines the F1 experience [...] to deliver even more for players at every level around the world," says Lee Mather, senior creative director at Codemasters.
Though there have been changes over the years, the F1 games under Codemasters have been broadly the same for a long time, perhaps leading to this decision to spend an extra year revamping the experience.
It's an interesting update, and while some fans might be disappointed by the lack of new game next year, hopefully the 2027 title will make up for it.

Sounds remarkably similar to what happened with PES 2021. And we know what happened next.
I'd rather sports games be on a 2-4 year cycle; as a fan of TheShow and FC, I tend only to purchase every two years anyway, unless I am itching to dig into that year's release. And at some point, how much more can we improve certain titles?
If ever there was a year as an "add on" year, this year was it with the new regs next year it would.have made more sense to concentrate on that.
Smacks to me of a "we dont know how next year will shake out, so cba" more than anything... if they have to 3d .model the cars anyway for next year's "version" then why not do a while new game and skip this year's?
All im saying is next year is gonna be the biggest shake up since hybrids came into the sport, and having the license, they should have planned accordingly.
Already not looking good with the buyout seemingly leading to this.
Think it’s a good way to handle this in a bi-yearly schedule for a new release. Having the 26 season as a paid dlc seems to be fair.
With the regulation changes in 2026 and cars looking and handling quite differently that seems like the year that needed a new game imo.
Most other years I wish they would just tweak it and add updated driver lineups / car liveries etc.
Obligatory PSVR2 plea comment
Agree with others. They've had all these years of static regulations where it's just a roster/livery change required.
That was when you do the £40 expansion and get it launched as close to the start of the season as possible.
The year you have a complete upheaval is the year you release the ground-up new game! They should have been working on that for the past 2 years.
Granted getting all the new car models/sounds/performance sorted would be a late-season release, but I'm happy with that.
@ErrantRob i agree. Man the one series that needs a few years off already is the NHL series. I know calling these games nothing but a roster update is kind of cliche. But it truly has turned into nothing but a roster update prob the last 5+ years. Not as egregious the years prior, but pretty close. If they are just gonna make them roster updates, then at least upgrade the game engine. They barely do that. Game still looks like a ps4 launch title. We are 5yrs into ps5. No excuse for this rubbish
@themightyant yeah I’d agree with this logic.
They won’t know a running order etc until April at the earliest then try and fit the sounds and handling and looks of new car by July? Would be a mess
@Dogbreath id imagine they could get everything bolted in with sounds etc by the mid season break - that gives them what, 5 months ti capture audio - which ive always thought is the perfect time to launch the game anyway - previous years the only reason its been Silverstone weekend was presumably the "hardcore" brit crowd, but now the break seems apt for the worldwide audience.
@Fakeplastictree Haha. Came to say the same thing. Codemasters were good at it too.
@Slideaway1983 At least Saudi are quite invested in F1 so in theory they should care about the game enough to keep it being made.
Personally I fell off of the F1 games years ago, they became very stale. I wish they would add a bunch more open wheel series to the game with F1 being the main draw. Something similar to Toca Race Driver back in the day which had so much content and felt more fleshed out.
@BlaizeV yeah I get that with the corniche circuit of late - especially making such a good track (IMO, anyway as a modern track its fast and flowing). Maybe that is kind of the point that PIF have given them a briefing or even F1 as well as to what needs to be done. I still personally feel like others its the wrong decision though.
Also agree with what you are saying with open wheel considering we usually have Porsche supercup, W series, f1, 2 and 3 all over race weekends - they can make a fairly fleshed out game if they wanted to. I loved TOCA back in the day, always loved the muller "cow" car that I think Plato drove 🤣
But ive got to be honest as I haven't bought this year's yet as im waiting for a deep sale. Last years update for me was "tyre deg" and thats all I could notice so wasn't interested in full price this year. That and I never find anyone to play online with and all of those randoms that just barge you off the track in damage on races, MP isn't for me.
Of course if anyone on here was willing to play a game with me id pick it up, as id love some good friends to play my favourite sports game!
@ErrantRob Well Joy for you but for EA. A new way of monetization line the pockets of these CEO's. 😅
Well EA did this very same thing with EA wrc and look how that turned out. Codemasters should have remained independent and continued the Dirt rally franchise. As much as I'm enjoying BF6 and EA wrc I'll never forgive them for shuttering codemasters..a real f**king travesty.
