Sep 2025 USA Sales: Ghost of Yotei PS5 Boycott Fails, Sequel Sells 'Great'

I’m not surprised. The boycott was kind of silly to begin with, and largely misunderstood. I’m glad the game is selling well—it’s a fantastic experience.

I finished Ghost of Yotei yesterday, having bought the Collector's Edition, and thought the game to be absolutely superb. I have no criticism of it whatsoever.

Personally, I prefer a female protagonist anyway, and where I have the option of creating my own character, I always make a pretty redhead! My Mass Effect Shepherd has always looked that way, and even when I play Gears of War Horde, I always select a female character.

All told, I have no idea why people would object to the protagonist based purely on her gender. I can understand people wanting to continue the story of Jin, that's one thing, but objecting to an entirely different character, in a different time setting, just because she's female? Get a life...

Again, what are the actual sale numbers? All this article shows are overall game revenue, led by ANOTHER game, and we’re told:

“Well Yotei came out this month and the month showed growth compared to last year so that means it’s selling awesome”

So, again, what are the SPECIFIC sale numbers?

There was zero chance it would fail. These stupid boycotts almost never work. Why? Most people don't care. They just want to play the game. Congrats to Sucker Punch.

Well the sexist boycott was stupid, and it'll be nice when racists, sexist, and general bigots stop thinking they're a legitimate cultural movement and not just the jokes of the Internet.

The SP-sponsered censorship, however, is worth taking offense to. I mean, I don't think the whole team or their product should suffer over it, but I wouldn't chalk that up to 'stupid, terminally online losers.'

@DadJKP I don't think they give out the actual sales numbers with these. That information is usually reserved for companies to disclose, should they choose to.

This is also only data for two days of Yotei's sales, so even having the specific number wouldn't be that useful or tell you much besides day one success.

@Oram77 Their ideology is just having a moment right now. I can't speak for every country, but it does feel like the ethos of their ideal leaders erodes by the month here in America. If they don't get some actual, socially benefiting results soon — which I highly doubt — the leaders will lose enough respect and influence over moderates to paint a clear picture over how small this 'movement' really is.

Glad the game is doing well though. It's really great. I do think I prefer Tsushima ever so slightly as I thought the story for that one was a bit more interesting but Yotei is a great game no doubt.

I don't think those opinions nor beliefs warrant a boycott. Though I do think any attempts to reduce, censor, or punish said opinions/beliefs should be viewed negatively.

The Hogwarts boycott was a fairly standard boycott, not wanting to financially support a person like Rowling, same as you’d do with Israeli products now or South African products in the 80s. It’s not about the product itself (a lot of people, myself included, genuinely do wish that the game wasn’t tainted), it’s about disagreeing with where your money is going and what it’s being spent on. Yotei, and other boycotts that I’ve probably lost track of by now, directly involve the product, whether that’s about them having women in major roles or including ‘woke ideologies’ or whatever, it’s not actually a boycott of products, just people not buying a specific game. I mean, Hogwarts put a trans character in the game but it didn’t matter, the money is still going towards Rowling. A lot of the issue also is calling things a boycott when all we can really do is control our own purchases, I didn’t buy Hogwarts but that’s on others if they spend their money on it, they just should know that their money is being funnelled into legal cases in my country that are directly impacting others’ rights.

Since when did a few tweets and YouTube videos complaining about the character being a woman count as a boycott?

Yotei was bound to be a successful game, regardless of all the rubbish online about it.

I remember a game which did have a concerted effort to boycott it. Hogwarts Legacy. And on both the articles where you report sales numbers, first 12 million then 22 million, you fail to mention that this was despite a boycott. Very strange.

Well, the media was 100% correct about AC Shadows being a barnstorming success and never engaged in a spin campaign at all, so...

The game deserves the success, it looks like an absolute banger. Sucker Punch always do great work.

Shocking how another "boycott" failed. I don't know why it's hard for some to understand that not everyone is an emotionally stunted weirdo upset over a fictional character's gender, skin color or etc. Most are just normal people who want to play a video game. I miss the days when people who weren't interested in something just passed on by and left it for the ones that are instead of being overly weird about it.

Boycotting a game of this quality and with this marketing budget with the disillusioned idea that anyone actually cares or that it will somehow have an impact on total sales is stupidity in its finest form.

Hogwarts legacy attracted the most controversy and had probably one of the largest boycotts in gaming history, yet is still Warner bros studios highest grossing title. As of November last year it had sold 30 million copies and generated over $1 billion.

@PullingaBharv It’s far too late for that. It would be basically pinkwashing. There’s been too much damage done for her to ever pull back from when even people like Stephen Fry are dumping her, who generally goes on about right to free speech and all that.

My main reason for boycotting, is because I'm avoiding games from American developers (and other products) due to Trump being in power and spitting on America's allies.

While I'd argue all representation is good representation, if it's done at the expense of the holistic work, the creators are really losing the plot. I'm not sure how exactly even the most lazy, pandering representation would poorly affect a holistic product...but I digress.

And if this is a parody of what some pro-representation person would think...I mean, i-it's not. No one's saying, 'make stories worse, just make sure there are minorities.' Some people might argue, like yours truly, that throwing a minority into a story with no justification for their ethnicity is completely fine. But...I dunno, I guess if it's a story about growing up a white American in white America, and they make the main character Spanish without reworking the story's themes around that ethnicity (the best example I can think of for making a story worse for the sake of representation), I wouldn't endorse that move. And I don't think anyone really would.

With one week in market, the US sales performance of Ghost of Yotei was basically flat to that of Ghost of Tsushima.

It did great.

They have access to the full sales numbers, they get the digital numbers directly from publishers, so this can be taken as a fact.

I have said similar before, but I wonder how many of those calling for a boycott on the grounds of what a member of the development staff said, would in turn call for a boycott of the company they work for - leading to them losing their job - because one of their colleagues said something similar on social media?...

@RoomWithaMoose I’m genuinely trying to think of a story that was actively made worse by including diverse characters. At worst, it can feel shoehorned, but that neither makes the story better or worse. I also think that those on the right aren’t aware that leftists hate corporate mandated diversity just as much as they do, it erodes opportunities for genuine creatives from diverse backgrounds and fuels outrage from the right that will impact the actual communities they claim to be representing. I have also taken incredibly obvious bait as a good faith comment so this has been a fun day.

@DadJKP You clearly doesn't know about Circana or used to known as NPD Group (National Purchase Diary). They are one of the biggest market research and tech company in the world. They're operating in 20 countries and helps retailers, manufactures, financial analyst, and public sector of how to measure their performances as well improve marketing, predict future performances, and identify business trends.

Circana stop giving sales numbers for free years ago and they only give it to people / company who paid for their service. So if Circana report says Ghost of Yotei is performed well and consistently similar to Ghost of Tsushima then that would be accurate.

If you still don't believe this report then maybe you could do your own. You can visit every retailers around the world and ask them how many Yotei copies they've sold. Good luck.

If it did exceptionally well they would have bragged about it with numbers. At least it made money. I’m sure It could have made more if they continued the story from the first or told another new straight Japanese man’s story. Plus not hiring a vocal activist in their private life then having an employee speak out against the recent erasing of a moderate that some don’t like. People can say what they want on sites like this but the reality is that gaming is so polarized but it’s only a problem when one side expresses what they don’t like. Then all of the “ist” words come out or these fans are a problem.

@nessisonett I mean, if an anti-representation/diversity person could come up with a specific circumstance in which diversity makes art worse, I think that's a worthwhile conversion to have. Just like how I think having conversations about good and bad representation is worthwhile, even though I'd still personally argue all* representation is good.

As for us taking the bait, shrugs Oh well. We still got to express our sincere thoughts on matters; what was catalyst to that is a little irrelevant. They're the ones that have to live with stifling intimate human interactions by lying. @Northern_munkey I'm kind of meh about it. On one hand, it looks like a great game in many objective aspects. On the other, I'm not a fan of the female main character in the historical setting (before people cry about misogyny, no I don't hate all female characters), and more importantly I'm reluctant to fund a country that is threatening to annex it's neighbours.

So I'm not exactly rooting for it, but I'm not devastated that it did well. It sends mixed signals.

It did so well Sucker Punch still refuses to tell us the numbers.
Yet, EA was happy telling us how much BF6 sold in the first three days.

For me this reeks of AC Shadows levels of propaganda, AC Shadows sold well enough to justify making the game but it didn't sell as much as Ubisoft wanted or needed.

Mistakes were made in Yotei, mistakes that aren't related with the game itself, which is a pretty awesome game mind you, but rather how people perceive the game.

While Sony not yet announce and bragged about the numbers, that doesn't mean the game is underperforming.

Example. To this day, Sony / PD never announced GT 7 official numbers either. They only announced the series already pass 100 million copies which is Sony best selling 1st party franchise. But estimates said GT 7 sold 14 million copies, far higher than Astro Bot 1.5 million copies that Sony announced the official numbers back in november last year. I'm sure GT 7 made a lot of money for Sony.

The same with MLB The Show series. Sony never announced the numbers for each game but every year each game always consistently chart in the top 10 and got positive reviews.

Boycotts against good games never work.

Whether it's due to monetisation policy like day one DLC, or political and social issues. If the game is good, it will sell well.

Whereas if the game is bad (Dragon Age), even the vocal online supporters of the product don’t actually put hard cash down on the counter top.

That being said, threats of a boycott clearly worked in this instance, as it resulted in the company taking action against bad employees.

At that point, those threatening a boycott quite rightly stood down and bought it.

Still, I suspect that sales were a bit soft compared to its predecessor.

@CielloArc This whole 'they didn't announce the numbers, so it must've underperformed' mentality is egregiously misguided. Companies are not expected to announce sales numbers, and often only publicly release them in fiscal meetings. Sometimes companies with an active social media presence like to post about sales or player count, but that's more marketing engagement than anything. Them not doing so isn't indicative of anything, really.

If execs think releasing sales info early might be good for stock prices or investor confidence (i.e. stock prices), they might command it. But that doesn't mean they're going to proudly announce the sales of every single game, and keep fans up to date with numbers on a weekly basis. If the stars align, we'll get data. If they don't announce data, we literally have no indication of success or failure — and it's foolhardy to assume otherwise.

Also, the game hasn't even been out for a month yet. Maybe they'll do a 'X million sales in a month!' post. Or are waiting to hit a big milestone before saying anything. At least wait a while before assuming they're actively being mum on the matter.

The game is absolutely amazing. Ghost of Tsushima was my second platinum trophy (remade account in 2024). Ghost of Yotei will be my 4th. 100%

@ATaco they’re not equivalent. One person said they don’t have sympathy for someone who literally got a taste of the medicine he spent his life preaching and she got fired for it. The other side is upset that a woman character looks like a real person instead of an anime waifu. And the latter is the far more vocal and numerous of the two.

An equal and opposite reaction. But thats not the RIGHT way to be. That is animal instinct. They are literally lowering themselves to prove their point, which just proves they are no better. Happens in both parties and all ideologies. It is an epidemic.

I finished the game and it was fine, but it didn't have the shock impact like the first. I hope Sucker Punch move on to new IP for the next game.

I just don't understand the hypocrisy involved.
We all work with people we don't like, disagree with the opinions of, or who quite frankly are idiots. And I'm sure that some of them post things publicly that we wouldn't like.
In this case, due to a comment that a dev team member made personally but publicly, people actually hoped for the failure of this game / attempted (in vain) to make this game fail, which most likely would have resulted in the closure of the studio, or at the least mass redundancies. Yet how many of these people would be prepared to 'boycott' their own workplace and resign from their jobs if any one of their work colleagues said something similar publicly?

Im not even passing comment on what was said, though im not sure on what grounds they were dismissed either.

The funny thing is, that when these little anti-woke etc campaigns start up, after the events of the last few years, they actually make me more inclined to buy the game! Maybe thats just me being odd.

Thankfully though it looks like this game has been a major success - which it deserves to be. I was on the fence due to not having really liked GoT, but Im really enjoying a very well made game.

Rich regarding the AI one, it was more about people saying everything is AI almost like a blanket statement, a recent example, someone accused Akira Yamaoka, you know one of the greatest gaming composers of using AI on the Silent Hill f OST!!!

I bought DA Veilguard last year after reading all the good reviews - 8/10 here, slightly over that on metacritic - I thoroughly enjoyed it and it was my 2nd favourite game last year.

@AstroBottom those 3 specific characters aren't exactly the best examples. 2 are cult classic franchises so most players literally haven't played them. The other was largely a generation removed from a lot of these people and the modern trilogy was good but very safe as a franchise.

They complain when female protagonists don't adhere to there specific desires in a female protagonist.

Aloy from the first game to the 2nd springs to mind. Going from liked or at least tolerated to disliked from these people. I agree the writing in the second was worse but her personality 'issue'?... Being more confident and outspoken.

Eve in stellar blade? Not the best writing or personality in gaming. But appealed to these people nonetheless.

Do we expect metroid games to sell like Stellar blade or horizon did?

When a male character is an a**hole, Like let's say max payne, it's fine, the character is an a**hole and we allow time to know his backstory and issues. He grows on us. Female protagonists are rarely given the same considerations. Especially if they don't look conventionally pretty. Like a certain shaved head in a ps5 trailer...

@DennisReynolds I'd put it to you that SP would have stood for that 5 years ago (so long as the "right person" was mocking the demise of the "wrong person") but changing tides and consumer sentiment changed that.

The employee felt very comfortable saying such things publicly in front of their work colleagues, because they knew it would receive approval and was in effect a virtue signal within their hivemind circles, despite the abhorrent nature.

That tells me everything I need to know about the corporate culture at SP, and that the firing was motivated by the potential damage to sales, not because they viewed it as distasteful (I bet senior managers are posting the exact same stuff on their burner accounts).

I was still going to buy the game anyway if it was good though. I know exactly what extremist views are held by the corporations and staff in the Western games industry, so if I cared about that I'd never buy another Western produced game.

.....and yet, we still don't get the actual sales numbers. The silence from Sony on this is suspicious, at best.

Love to see it! Haven’t played it yet, but just got the platinum for Ghost of Tsushima and intend on jumping into Yōtei after Echoes of the End.

Erika supports and is part of the LGBTQ+ community, if people are allies to the LGBTQ+ community then Erika is fine with them they just take issue with those against themselves and the community. Ever worked for a corporation? Yeah its common knowledge you watch what you say publicly and online because if you work for a corp you represent them. Celebrating an assassination of public figure a day after its happened is getting you sacked.

I haven't bought it yet, but the only reason is because I made the terrible mistake of replaying Ghost of Tsushima like 2 months ago and proceeded to burn myself out on that style of repetitive open world game. Yotei looks very similar, so I need a bit of a longer break. I'll probably up playing it in January next year.

The weird thing is we got many male protags who's kinda an ass**** and also a mass murderer lol like Duke Nukem, Max Payne, Hotline Miami Jacket, Greek era Kratos etc but people never boycott or called them out.

@PuppetMaster Several of the male characters you mentioned are anti-heros. People may think they are bad asses, but they are definitely not portrayed as aspirational protagonists.

Off hand, I can't think of a female anti-hero protagonist in gaming or much modern media in general. Playing Femshep in Mass Effect as a Renegade is about the closest I can cite off the top of my dome. Perhaps Atsu is one? I haven't played Yotei yet. I think this is very much an effect of the Galbrush Paradox where a female character is still read to be something of a statement on women in general, while a male character is just a character.

If you're fine with the LGBTQ+ community then Erika's comments aren't aimed at you. @Sweetz The new Supergirl from the latest Superman film has been getting backlash from the right because she was drunk and swore (like she does from the comic this Kara is based on). A female version of Trevor would go down like a lead balloon. Hell Harley Quinn gets hate from some circles because of that.

There was some threat to sales, not massive, but enough to warrant taking action given the current climate and the way the wind was blowing.

I'm criticising the idea of boycotts by the way, and not taking the side you think I am.

Boycotts for such reasons are daft. The culture in the media/entertainment industry is well known. As I said, the senior leadership at SP privately share the fired employees views, as will most of the staff.

Unless you share their extreme ideology, everyone at ALL of these firms hate you.

I know they hate me, but shall I never buy a western game again? Of course not. I just accept it for what it is and stick to the basic principles of only buying good games.

GoY's weaker sales are nothing to do with any of the politics you've all been hammering in the comments.

It's a sequel where there will be some drop off from those who played the original, there is some fatigue over the setting, and general loss of interest in that open world Ubisoft formula, which if we are honest, is what the game boils down to behind the artistic flare.

Everyone wants it to be about their politics. Sorry but it ain't.

Have you actually played Hogwarts Legacy?
I ask this because of the context you use it in.

It is one of the more inclusive games this generation - hence why I bought it, in spite of the authors views.

It includes a fantastically written Trans woman, who's history is nicely woven into the lives of others, and the game lightly explores some of the difficulties she faced growing up. She is one of the better written trans characters I can remember in games.

The game also includes multiple different ethnicities and different sexual orientations.

Your right... it has been a huge success - but because people looked past the authors views and to the actual content written by the dev team, which in my opinion is positive and inclusive. (That said I can understand if some have personally chosen not to buy it because the author will receive some financial gain).

To call the game JKR's Hogwarts Legacy is not really right - this is the development teams game. There are even a few other signposts of this from a lore point of view - eg the ultimate hero spell expelliarmus - the spell that can do no harm - can be turned into a damaging curse which is far more effective lol.

I agree with a lot of what you are saying, and before I get into anything else - death threats, or threatening peoples families etc is just not unacceptable.
But I do understand some of what @DennisReynolds is saying.

The problem with hatred towards minority groups is that it can wear people down.
The unfair biases of others, keeping things to yourself (the proverbial closet), and sometimes just the way that hateful language is used without thought because it is so woven into society. That's before the genuine fear of living in a world where people hate you, knowing that some would try and harm you or your family, just because of who you are / how you were born.

Context is needed however - the outright backlash against people who say something that offends, but without nasty intention, because they don't think, don't understand, don't word correctly (/taken out of context), or aren't being politically correct, is just ridiculous too. Not to mention the whole "you said something X years ago that was X-ist" - people change and grow!

But, given what I have said above, it is no wonder people from minority groups like LGBTQ+ can behave in a way that isn't their best on occasion. 'isn't their best' is the best description I can come up with - there still needs to be some proportionality here, but again context is important (I just don't think it appropriate to give examples).

I genuinely hope the world is changing and that people like your nephew never have to face (ideally) any, or (realistically) as much, of the prejudices that should be in this worlds past, but given some of the comments by a few others above, we aren't quite there yet, even on a relatively respectful site like this (referencing comments).

EA did a press release (see EA.com press releases) totally bragging about selling over 7 Million copies in three days. Three days. Over 7 million.

If you like playing a game, review it without being unbiased and I will decide from there. I have to deduct several points from a review score when I see a review site using questionable assumptions to promote buying a game.

EA literally made a press release on the official site as soon as monday came to celebrate the sales.

And yes, while companies aren't obliged to divulge sales numbers they quite often make these kind of celebratory posts when a game is doing good, which is what I complained about.

One case I can mention is Astro Bot, no celebratory posts were made for the game, when the Q2 2025 shareholder meeting came it was revealed the game sold 1.5 million copies over three months, which isn't an impressive number for the investment made but it made clear the IP has potential, mainly because over half of that number were people who were first time buyers.

As for Nintendo, they simply don't release data or celebrate their games outside things like one year anniversary or something similar.

I finished it yesterday. It's in second place for me for GOTY year after Expedition 33.

I don't care if a Voice actress is an awful person. Yotei was fun & I will continue support major all developers (Especially US developers) that release quality games. Hogwarts Legacy was great too & I'm not a Harry Potter fan. People crying brought it to my attention.
