While probably not the first to ever do it, Sucker Punch's inFAMOUS: Second Son was arguably the real starting point for photo modes in games.
Since then, the developer has included the feature in each of its subsequent titles, and we'd say it's one of the best at it.
We already knew Ghost of Yotei would include a photo mode from day one, and that's no surprise given how photogenic it and its predecessor Ghost of Tsushima are.
The studio has gone into quite comprehensive detail about Yotei's photo mode in a recent PS Blog post, and it looks seriously robust.

You'll be able to pause the game at basically any moment and hop behind the lens, with options to take a still image, a cinemagraph (a photo with some moving elements), or a tracking shot.
The number of settings and tools to fiddle with in photo mode is pretty crazy; there are the usual photography gubbins like focal length and depth of field, but you can also choose from a range of colour filters, particle effects, wind speed, weather, facial expressions, and more. You can even change how much sword glint there is on Atsu's katana.
It seems Sucker Punch is really opening the floodgates to let players embellish their photos and clips in a vast number of ways, perhaps more so than ever.
We expect we'll be taking many pretty pictures of Yotei's gorgeous landscapes. What about you? Are you interested in Ghost of Yotei's photo mode? Tell us in the comments section below.

Photomode in Ghost of Tsushima was one of the best across all titles β fast, comfy, many different options. Looking forward to the one in Yotei.
Even though making in-game shots seems not that popular, I still appreciate Sony's effort on releasing titles with photomode available from the start. Almost too tired to replay games after this feature appears later on, like this happened with GoW Ragnarok.
I always appreciate photo modes but rarely use them.
Wasn't the case with Ghost of Tsushima β my old PS4 has hundreds of screenshots on it. The environments were just too stunning not to pause and capture the moment.
@ShogunRok I never once used Photo mode for Stellar Blade in any my play throughs..... nope, not a single time, π
@Oram77 I'm thinking those screenshots may need to be locked behind a password...
Elden Ring has no Photo Mode yet I have about 800MB worth of screenshots no videos. Funny because the games with actual Photo Modes, I don't take too many screenshots. Ghost of Tsushima's art style looks really good and it's looking to look even extremely better in Yotei.
I take loads of screenshots and short videos in games - though I dont know why - its not like you have been able to move what you want from 1 console to the next (except to Pro), and its likely you wont be able to move to PS6...
Hopefully the photo mode is as good as Insomniac's.
I think I have like 8 screenshots on my PS5, and all 8 of them are from Ghost of Tsushima.
One of them is that horseback moon shot that Iβm sure 90% of people have taken. Itβs almost certainly the Machu Picchu dating site picture of the video game world.
