Helldivers 2 has had its low points in its short lifespan so far, but by and large it's been a massive hit for Sony and developer Arrowhead Game Studios.
It's been so successful, in fact, that the team expects it'll be maintaining and updating the sci-fi co-op shooter indefinitely, with no sequels or off-shoots in the works.
Speaking to fans on the game's Discord, CEO Shams Jorjani says Arrowhead has "no plans for [Helldivers 3] – just [Helldivers 2] for as long as it can go", using the long-running MMO RuneScape as an example of the lifespan it's hoping its game may have.
Jorjani expands in further comments:
"Myself and the directors agree we would love this to be a forever game. Assuming we get a grip on the performance and dev practices we can keep expanding it for a long time. PlayStation is super supportive."
The game's clever Galactic War concept sees all players working as one Super Earth army, fighting back against live developments as Arrowhead continues the overarching story. With this framework, we can see Helldivers 2 continuing for years.
What do you think? Are you happy for Helldivers 2 to keep building and evolving for the foreseeable future, or would you prefer the studio works on a whole new game? Discuss in the comments section below.

This is what Bungie is trying do with Destiny 2, but unlike Bungie Arrowhead seem to know what they are doing (most of the time) so this makes sense really.
For the most part, Arrowhead is really good at keeping their fingers on the pulses of multiple subsets of the Helldivers 2 community. If they keep that up, they'll be fine in the long-run.
Music to my ears 😋
I love Helldivers 2 (duh), but they will need to continue to make substantial changes over the course of its lifetime if they want to maintain engagement. I'm constantly maxed out on samples and without buying Warbonds, there's not really much of an incentive to grind out missions. The gameplay is Superfun on its own, but even great gameplay can get stale.
Things I would love:
1. Maps with multiple enemy races, fighting you and each other
2. New enemy races (doesn't need to be soon, but will be needed eventually)
3. Tints for armors
4. Larger Warbonds that take longer to grind out
5. Newer ship improvements to use samples on
6. Interior building missions! Caves are a great start, but would LOVE missions that take you into giant humanmade structures
The biggest problems are the engine, outdated and unsupported, and their own spaghetti code holding everything together after the game had way more users than they expected.
They need to try to get it ported to a new engine. This will allow for more players and bigger battles. If they could somehow get it to decima I think it could survive a long time.
Honestly, what they need to do to make it a forever game is have a small team start working on a total engine conversion into something built for what they are doing. Their chosen engine is already unsupported. They're one of, like, 2 devs in the world who even use it. The skill set(s) needed to work on it and keep it running will disappear or they will be required to train developers on an obsolete engine, the skills developing for which will not help that dev in the future, which is a hard sell to potential talent.
If they overhauled the backend from the ground up and rebuilt the game, I actually think they could pull it off. But without taking that admittedly drastic step, I think the game will eventually break under the pressure they put upon it.
EDIT: I should have read the comments. Seems I'm not the only person who recognizes the need for a new engine! Lol
Nice! No need for 3 if they can stabilize 2 and keep building on it. They’ve done a good job so far.
Not surprise. Helldivers 2 sold 15 million copies which is a lot more than Helldivers 1 and any Arrowhead games. They pretty much wants to keep making contents for the game at least in the next 5 years. That way they keep the cost as low as possible but still earned good revenue from new contents.
The way it's running right now it won't, they've apparently listened to us players and are doing minor performance tweaks when it needs a major overhaul. The PC version is 144GB in size because it has every file in duplicate form and it shouldn't be like that, latest patch added another 4GB to it.
Right now it runs like ***** and can't even hold a decent frame rate even on a 5800X3D and 7900XTX and the games expires unsupported engine is a CPU hog. It also has been running crap on PS5 at times as well but that install size is half the size of PC.
It needs a totally new engine that's supported and easy for future employees to learn and use
I was a casual fan of H1 but I’ve been a huge fan of H2 since launch (have 1200 hours in and play it pretty much daily) and supporting the game rather than cranking out a new game with new assets and new physics which might or might not capture the appeal of H2 makes sense to me.
They just need to keep up the stream on content (new enemies and a new warbond every several weeks, a big event with new biomes and mission types every several months) and of course try to minimize bugs. The Into the Unjust event, two warbonds in rapid succession and the Xbox version all hitting within the timeframe of a few weeks meant that the minor instability that normally afflicts H2 after a new addition became major instability. The developers simply need to pace themselves better (and work on getting the game out of the state it’s currently in) if they want to keep H2 going for the long haul.
Game is currently unplayable for me. I redownloaded it the other day to see whats new but it felt like I was getting booted every single mission at least once. So I deleted it again. I had my fun when it first came out but it’s just not worth my time anymore. I will say It’s nice they’ve updated it so when you do get booted it remembers the load out you went in with, but that shouldn’t be necessary.
I'm perfectly fine with this but I'd really like to see occasional updates with additional trophies added to the trophy stack. Just the kind of gamer I am....
@Oram77 Destiny 2 has being doing incredibly well for many years. I don't really get your point.
@SMJ As someone who has 7K hours in D2 I know what I'm talking about it comes and understanding the community, if you think they're doing well after the launch of Edge of Fate, oh boy....
Nine game crashes in the space of two days, they need to fix the games performance
@wildcat_kickz IMAGINE HOW COOL THAT WOULD BE IF WE COULD BOARD AUTOMATON SPACE SHIPS AAAAGHHH !!!
Like in the good old Battlefront 2, be it PS2 or PS4.
And have ressuplies and stratagems pierce armor, or have the need to hijack or explode from the inside the airlocks or whatever.
