Amazon's God of War TV Adaptation to Start Filming in Six Months

Filming in 6 months but not having your literally larger than life star picked out seems a great way to go.🙄

I mean hopefully the contract is signed they just haven't announced it yet. Though I suppose it won't take long to learn the script of saying "Boy" over and over.

I’m sorry, but I do not have faith in this working out. A lot about what worked in the Norse Games was that it was a SEQUEL to the Greek series. Sure they can show the Greek series in flashbacks, but it’s not the same thing as going from GOW 3, where Kratos was at his lowest point, to 2018 where he is slowly starting to getting his life back in order

I really and I mean REALLY can't see any GoW story working out on the silver screen, anime maybe but definitely not live action/ CGI slop fest....

I feel like you need a Kratos before you set a date for filming.

Definitely curious to see who they get to play kratos

Im very glad they picked the norse mythology (it certainly has the biggest mass market appeal), but they need to pick the right cast.

Sony make more tv shows than games these days. Incredible that they sell their single player gaming stories to make television but the gaming department decided to almost abandon making single player games.

God of War 2018 doesn't work without everything leading up to it. I don't have much faith in this adaptation, as much as I'd like to see it.

Crazy take to not start with the Greek mythology. Maybe they would have to involve David Jaffe if they did the original games?

Sounds very much like someone who hasn't played the games.

I was discussing the subject of video game adaptations with my daughter just yesterday, and we came to the conclusion that they are kind of pointless. With a book to screen adaptation you have the addition of visuals and music etc, seeing someone's vision of the story and how closely it matches what was in your head when you read the book. A videogame to screen adaptation is purely reductive; you already have a product with visuals, production design, music etc, and you are reducing that by removing the very thing that made it so unique and fun in the first place: interactivity.

It takes the game story from active to passive. And they very rarely nail the atmosphere and tone of the original product in any case.

These sorts of adaptations just seem to be a very expensive promotional material/merchandising opportunity.

@TimeDelayedGamer I couldn't disagree more. Movies and TV-Shows with good actors and directors can be way more immersive than video games. There is only so much realism video games can offer. All the subtleties of human behaviour are lost in video games.

@TimeDelayedGamer I only played a bit of Fallout with Fallout 3 which i honestly didn't enjoyed the gameplay. But i enjoyed watching the tv series. The same for The Witcher tv series. I never read the books and only played a bit of Witcher 2. But i enjoyed the tv series season 1 & 2.

There's people out there who doesn't have the time to play 30-100 hours games, doesn't have the money to buy a console / PC gaming, or they just doesn't have the ability to play video games anymore. But with video games adaptation, at least these people can enjoyed a bit of entertainment from some popular video games.

So no, i don't think video games adaptation is pointless.

The vast majority of video games will not translate well to TV/film. To be honest I couldn't care less if my favourite games became TV shows or films. The likelihood is they would be a lesser version where I can't make my own choices and direct the action as one can in a game. These are basically all cash grabs with very little creative passion and mostly clueless writing. The Last of Us is a decent exception but for those of us who enjoyed the games, it was still lacking for obvious reasons.

@naruball I understand your point but games have come a long way in the last 10-20 years in terms of storytelling and nuanced characters. Yes TV and film can be enthralling with the right set of circumstances but that's just it - the majority of game adaptations have second rate writers and underwhelming actors (much like the majority of Netflix shows and I suppose entertainment in general nowadays). Fallout is another worthy exception to the rule but you really need a good screenwriter and quality, well cast actors which most adaptations aren't getting. Money talks and they'll keep making crap if people keep paying to watch it.

@16BitHero the ones that are successful tend to have good budgets and involve excellent actors (even if they don't look or act exactly like them). The recipe for success is pretty clear.

Also, again, even though you're that video games have come far, when a video character says something, it's hard to see them as anything other than a video game character, since they still don't act like human beings 100%. And then when you control them, they don't move 100% like human beings. So in terms of immersion, they are very different mediums.

I have to assume they're going to use the book adaptation as the source to anchor this. The GoW books do a solid job of focusing the story, hitting the major events and such without having a fight every 20 steps.

@naruball those are good and fair comparisons. Red Dead Redemption 2 comes to mind. Rockstar went for realistic character motion/movement but a lot of people found it a little sluggish and unwieldy compared to what we're used to in games. Like everything else, each game/TV show/film should be judged on it's own merits and will always be subject to personal opinions/preferences.

I'm hoping there's going to be at least one flashback episode , it would make sense ,if you haven't played the games you wouldn't know the kind of lunatic kratos used to be.

I know he's no spring chicken, but Christopher Judge is the only person I will accept as Kratos. He's made the role his, and we know he can command screen presence.

@Vladspartan Kratos in the Greek saga is bigger than him, in the Norse saga they made Kratos less tall. Hes in between the 2 versions of Kratos, so not too big. Might not be a good actor, but not a lot of action hero actors are known for their acting skills. He wont be casted as Kratos, but i think he could look a lot like Kratos
