The latest Dying Light 2 update on PS5, PS4 has fundamentally changed how you navigate its open world, removing the reliance on stamina to perform parkour moves completely.
Explained in a blog post, you'll no longer need to maintain a stamina gauge when you're moving about and parkouring across the open world. Stamina still plays a part during combat, when using the paraglider, and when you're swimming underwater, but the restriction has now been lifted everywhere else.
Techland wishes to improve the "core gameplay experience" through this PS5, PS4 update, making traversal "more fluid and enjoyable, positioning stamina primarily as a combat resource. You’ll now have the full freedom to explore Villedor the very moment you enter the city!"
To maintain mission progression, stamina will impact parkour between the quests Pilgrim's Path and Markers of Plague. "This update seeks to balance exploration and combat, ensuring that players can navigate the environment smoothly while managing their stamina during critical gameplay moments."
Does more freeing movement and parkour make you want to go back to Dying Light 2? Let us know in the comments below.

I was going to say updating games fundementally after the release feels wrong on some level for the people who experience it much later but I think they found a good balance here.
Only having the challenge while in missions but not while freely exploring sounds nice.
On some level this feels like taking away the game people bought. This should only be a thing in the options, it should not be a mandatory change. This feels genuinely shady as a business practice.
@Jaz007 why is it shady business practice?
I keep meaning to give this a second playthrough as the score was solid but the game itself a tad average. Problem is too many other better games in the back catalogue at the mo...
@Jaz007 how so they keep it in combat it just not there for running and jumping in the open world and still there for swimming it not like they took it out for good.
Was actually thinking about picking this up, is it worth $20?
@Reeneman Because it’s fundamentally altering how a single player game people already bought paid for with no ability to play the game they actually bought if they want to. Great as an option, even by default, but people should absolutely be able to turn the stamina back on.
Games being altered after release has happened too many times now.
@Jaz007 Regardless of how you feel about it, calling this specific instance shady is beyond absurd. It doesn't apply at all.
Good! I HATE stamina in my power fantasy!
@aj21009 indeed it is!
I loved Dying Light. I found the gameplay loop in 2 highly annoying for a lot of different reasons, and dropped it about half way through the story.
I am glad they are tinkering with it, as it certainly needs improvement. But I am certainly not going back. Already too many good games to play, and not enough time.
@Westernwolf4 Same. For some reason 2 just didn’t click like the first one and I gave up on it after a while. Hard to pinpoint what it was but didn’t have the same… something.
@Jammer I just can't enjoy it, the exploration is so boring and uninteresting and needlessly handholdy. Not to mention the majority of sidequests is just timed parkour missions.
@Jaz007 Its a semi live service game and we knew from the start it would see changes based on feedback as they promised years of support. This change was wanted by the playerbase as it makes exploring the world far better.
@DennisReynolds So put an option to switch back in the options menu. It’s not bad this can be added, that’s good, but it shouldn’t be totally forced.
One of those games where I feel like playing a bit of it every few months and then get tired again. Will re-download and have a mess around with the new update anyway.
@Jaz007 This new update has implemented a change that was requested by the playerbase, why would Techland have it as an option when the majority of it’s playerbase wanted this change? Makes no sense having it as an option, so it’s absolutely right they made it mandatory.
Nice. I'm assuming this is on the PC version as well. One thing I hated was running out of stamina every few steps after fighting a zombie and trying to escape a horde. It put me off playing. That and the cardboard NPCs. But may install it on my steam deck now as I just put a 1080p OLED in it. So why not. I might buy it on my PS5 Pro anyway actually if it's still being improved.
I don't remember having many issues with stamina during traversal. I found I ran out while climbing, but after you play for awhile you level up climbing and are able to get to places you couldn't before. Thought that was by design to prevent you from accessing parts of the story early in the game. Can you climb without stamina running out now?
I was so bored playing this. Have no desire to revisit.
@Jaz007 Seriously? Of all the things wrong with the gaming industry you think this shady? Continued support and minor improvements are shady? Sure thing.
