References to Adolf Hitler appear to have been removed from the upcoming visual novel game Dark Auction, with those interested in the title highlighting the changes made to its Steam page. Whereas the game was originally called Dark Auction: Hitler's Estate, the subtitle has now disappeared.
This carries on into the description, where Hitler is now referred to as "Dictator X". Taking a look at the Steam page's history via wayback machine, Hitler was directly named in promotional material: "Noah, whose father hunts for Hitler artifacts, is drawn into an auction at an ancient castle."

Now, that sentence reads: "Noah lives with his eccentric father, who searches for artifacts linked to 'Dictator X'." It's not clear exactly when the change was made, but no public reason has been provided.
Dark Auction comes from Hotel Dusk: Room 215 and Another Code writer Rika Suzuki, and it still sets up an interesting premise on PS5, despite the changes made. There's no confirmed release date just yet.
"One day, an invitation arrives for an auction selling items connected to “Dictator X.” Ignoring Noah’s protests, Leonardo sets off for the ancient castle where the auction is to be held, promising to tell Noah everything once he returns. But Leonardo never comes home. With no way to contact him, Noah heads to the castle himself — only to witness something shocking."

This is just sad. Not to mention irrational.
ITS POLITICAL CORRECTNESS GONE MAYAD! But actually sounds sensible, it could cause issues with distribution, even if obviously not pro-Nazi the iconography and theme might conflict with various T&C’s.
Plus ‘Dictator X’ gives it a nice global feel, is it Hitler? Mousellouini? Kim Jong un? Mr T? The Action Man villain who had a great design but not sure what his actual deal was?
@Hyena_socks
Not that I’m too bothered, but given the choice, I’d prefer one of the worst periods in human history was taught rather than hidden.
I hate that the world is such a ***** softy these days. Jfc...
Glad this is corrected since it would be very emotionally exhausting for me if they left it as it was.
I mean who would’ve been offended by this? Precisely no one?
Can we stop putting our fingers in our ears and going la la la la trying to pretend points in history and people didn't exist, it makes a mockery of the people that lived and died through it.
it's history for a reason, for better or for worse and still needs to be taught.
The original German version of Wolfenstein 2 also had no Hitler. That guy was named Heiler and had no beard.
Dark Auction: Heiler‘s Estate, maybe?
This is stupid. What's the point in trying to pretend history doesn't exist?
We all know they're not trying to glamourise anything here. It's just a story. I'd be very surprised if anyone was offended by this.
History has taught us nothing, Active genocides currently happening, UN powerless, Dictators in place in all Superpower countries. This post likely to be silenced.
The same people that complained about Hitler name being used are probably calling others nazi in the most happy go lucky way.
Go figure, I do not agree with this kind of censorship.
@thefourfoldroot1 100% agree, and luckily it is taught in schools. I think it’s a powerful lesson that seems to have been forgotten, with this global rise in the far right and neo-fascism.
But also hard to make a proper conclusion on this specific game without context, maybe it’s the opposite, they didn’t want to offend neo-Nazis.
Doubtful though, not sure they’re a key demographic of non-pornographic Japanese VN’s, but we still don’t know enough to make a snap judgement.
Strange considering the basis of the story and the fact that other games and media has used references to Adolf in the past, including Wolfenstein more recently..
Be interested to hear their reasoning as to why and hope it's just more a personal design choice than a preemptive effort to avoid potential criticism somehow
You know what's the best way to prevent horrible historical events from happening again?
Completely ignoring them and pretending they didn't exist seems to be the answer.
Pathetic.
A whole game, taking influence from the plot of that Justified episode with the art collector.
Yeah Adolf Hitler is the worse of the worst.so I can understand that.but people need to know at the same time who he is.word up son

Very odd but I assume ratings boards kicked up a fuss. I’m sure if we all pretend Hitler didn’t exist then there would be no more genocide. Oh wait.
@Dodoo Nazis?
It's obviously fine and instructive to teach about WW2, Hitler and the Holocaust in schools, learn from history and so on. But it's quite another thing to include Hitler in something as likely frivolous as a computer game. And there may be extra complications if this is a Japanese game, given Japan's role in WW2.
@Bluemoon2008 I’m not there are any?
Even after died decades ago Hitler ghost is still haunting people nowadays 😱
iirc Atlus also changed the Nazi symbol and Hitler from english version of Persona 2.

I wouldn't like to be his dog when he finds out
I'm not against it having Hitler, but I wouldn't buy a game that involves any real world government leaders.
Holy crap, kids, removing Hitler from a crappy Japanese visual novel is not "erasing history". If you want history, go read a damned book... if the government hasn't already burned or banned them. Stop disingenuously conflating the two because you're mad that Hitler can't be more at the front of popular media.
If you think him not being in a nothing burger of a visual novel game is "hiding him" and "erasing history", you're not the type that actually wants people educated on our actual history and are just mad because Hitler is censored. Stop the obvious and transparent performative grandstanding.
Nah you gotta commit with these things , otherwise things will never change
@PuppetMaster Yeah, but everyone loves cool glasses wearing Hitler 🤣
As a german myself I honestly don’t want to see a videogame with Hitler in the title…
