Arrowhead Game Studios, the developer behind the enormously successful Helldivers 2, has a new stakeholder in Chinese conglomerate Tencent.
The company has just acquired 15.75 per cent of shares in the studio, costing them $80 million.
Arrowhead's co-founders own the rest of the business, with the remaining shares split between Johan Pilestedt, Emil Englund, Malin Hedstrom, Peter Lindgren, and Anton Stenmark.
The studio as a whole is valued at roughly $532 million, according to Swedish outlet DI. The same report claims turnover of just under $100 million, and an operating profit of nearly $76 million.
In other words, Arrowhead's been raking it in, and now it has a partner that can aid it further with a foothold in China.
Getting Tencent involved "opens up opportunities for China as a market," says Pilestedt (via Google Translate). "Gaining access to the Chinese player base is the holy grail in the gaming industry."
Helldivers 2 has had its ups and downs, of course, but it's also the fastest-selling game in PlayStation's history, and that sort of thing won't have gone unnoticed.
Tencent has been really splashing the cash, investing in video game companies of all kinds recently, including Ubisoft, Kadokawa, and Kuro Games (Wuthering Waves) to name a few.

That's probably funding for there new project which I don't think will be Helldivers 3 but something else
No wonder the CEO said their next game will not partner with Sony. But eh, it's their choice and i respect that. I wish good luck to them though.
"Gaining access to the Chinese player base is the holy grail in the gaming industry."
Best get making that gacha HellDivers 3 then.
Guys Sony own HellDivers IP not ArrowHead just an FYI
Edit: TenCent have so many fingers in different pies, really not sure if that's a good thing or not...
@UltimateOtaku91 ahah who knows with cute and sexy anime characters i bet the game will profit really good
Best of luck for them with the new project
I've lost interest in their next game now.
Thats kinda a lot for a company that doesn't have any valuable IP, but I assume they still make decent money from Helldivers 2 even with Sony getting the Lions share
Well the dirty sell outs won't be getting any purchases from me in the future then apparently the Helldivers want to support dictatorships now
Managed Democracy and Managed Economy, together at last.
Well... it's been tried before I suppose... didn't end well...
sony owns helldivers ip so there will be no other helldivers games without sony approval..
Tencents continued buying up of alot of the gaming industry is not a good thing
I play Helldivers 2 on a daily basis in the morning before work and often find myself playing alongside a Chinese player or two so this move makes sense for Arrowhead.
I expect continuing strong support for H2 in the medium term but I am eager to see what Arrowhead’s next game no matter who the publisher is or what the game is. Arrowhead is great at developing and refining multiplayer games.
I've heard somewhere their next game will be multiplat , it won't be related to helldivers though as others have said Sony owns the IP, helldivers success was partly due to starship troopers , what with all the memes and comments from Rico, Sony own that as well.
This is why Sony didn’t buy the studio. As good as Helldivers 2 is, they are not worth $500+ million.
@Oram77 Sony can sell or give back the IP to Arrowhead, just like they did with Death Stranding.
@PuppetMaster And that's fine, I was just telling people they owned the IP that's all
Looks like Bungie will be making the next Helldivers then 😆
A big fumble by Sony in not buying Arrowhead. This could be just as bad as the from software fumble.
@PlatinumMikey Bungie can’t even make game styles they understand these days 🤣
I really don't care whether Microsoft, Sony or Nintendo buy companies. In my head it's fine because they have a proven track record within the industry as game makers and hardware manufacturers. Even Meta have contributed a lot towards the industry.
Tencent, Amazon and Google. Those guys I have a problem with.
@Odium 😂😂. Think I’m the only person looking forward to Marathon ðŸ˜
The way they spoke, I figured they didn't want any partner. So that's kind unfortunate not only was it not with Sony, but tencent of all companies.
Apparently a large community of Chinese players took part in the defence of Super Earth and were one of the few who successfully repelled the Illuminate and saved a city.
So Tencent probably realised it's a big market there for them to exploit and gives Arrowhead huge scope to grow and push further there.
I started playing HD2 this week and having a great time.
Tencent is a terrible company though.
Guess Sony won't be buying Arrowhead then 😔
@Carnage Pitty they suck fixing bugs and tanking performance when they release a patch
@PlatinumMikey admittedly, I have no qualms with it, I’m going by what everyone else has been saying. It was never a game for me as I’m mostly a solo gamer. I hope it delivers for you! I still stand by the fact that Destiny has some of the best shooting in gaming, I hope Bungie hasn’t lost that.
@twick87 but yet they gave Bungie billions and they can’t even produce their own art. This is what i don’t understand with Sony’s new leadership. They just make so many bad moves with online games it’s insane. They have spent at least around 4 billion dollars and have no online games they have internally made and control to save their cheeks. Something’s off, they normally don’t miss this hard.
