Mortal Kombat 1 Dev Finished with PS5 Fighter, Moving to Next Project 1

As expected, Mortal Kombat 1 developer NetherRealm Studios is moving on from its PS5 fighter.

Back when the team announced the Complete Edition of the game earlier in the month, many fans assumed it was Game Over for any future DLC or add-ons. That’s despite series creator Ed Boon promising the title would have “years of support”.

Now, approximately 20 months after it launched, the company has confirmed what many suspected: there’ll be balance adjustments and fixes moving forwards, but otherwise, the studio is done with the release.

“We understand this will be disappointing for fans, but our team at NetherRealm needs to shift focus to the next project in order to make it as great as we possibly can,” the statement reads.

The word is that it’s cooking a new Injustice game, which probably feels overdue after the previous entry in the DC fighting franchise launched over eight years ago. Personally, we think NetherRealm Studios made a mistake releasing Mortal Kombat 1 so soon after Mortal Kombat 11, as the appetite just wasn’t there.

Still, while some fans are quite frustrating that the latest fighter’s support is ending so soon, others are having a more positive reaction, thanking the studio for its efforts and encouraging it to bring its A-game with whatever it releases next.
