Ghost of Yotei Foraging

Ghost of Yotei will apparently see players gathering natural resources on their travels — which immediately raises questions about certain gameplay systems.

This cheeky little detail is touched upon in a new PlayStation Blog post from Sucker Punch's Nate Fox. In it, the Yotei director writes about the developer's research visit to Japan, which saw the team delve into Ainu culture and practices.

During the trip, Ainu cultural advisor Yukiko Kaizawa was on hand to introduce Fox and the gang to foraging — the act of collecting plants and vegetables from their immediate surroundings.

As it turns out, the team was so taken by the process that they decided there and then to incorporate foraging into Ghost of Yotei. Fox doesn't go into any real depth, but the inclusion of resource gathering immediately suggests that the game's open world could be more interactive than Ghost of Tsushima's.

"The group of us traveled up a nearby mountain and got to know each other while foraging for vegetables. It was great, all of us from Sucker Punch stopped taking pictures and got our hands dirty. We started really looking at the plants beneath our feet," writes Fox.

"It was a lovely way to make new friends and start our journey in learning about Ainu culture. That night we resolved to put foraging into our new game, we wanted players to be able to share the experience we were lucky enough to have experienced."

It's entirely possible that we'll learn more about the title's take on foraging next month, when Yotei gets its dedicated State of Play showcase. Indeed, the broadcast is set to provide our first real look at the upcoming PS5 exclusive — and we can't wait.

What do you make of this foraging business, then? Is your brain jumping to crafting systems and stuff like that, or do you think it'll be more of a side activity? Grab some vegetables in the comments section below.
