No Man's Sky continues its incredible run of significant post-launch updates with Beacon, another free update that's available to all players this week.
Beacon makes huge changes to settlements in the game, allowing you to build up towns and manage them all as mayor.
You can own multiple settlements, which can now feature various new buildings for you to construct. These include jukebox bars (where you can pick the music), merchants who can build custom starships, and a pond where you can fish.
You'll be able to converse with residents of your settlements, and will even need to make decisions to solve disputes from time to time.
Your settlements will also need protection, and the update allows you to hire wingmen to defend your towns from invaders.
If you've been wanting No Man's Sky's settlements to be a more meaningful part of the experience, the Beacon update adds a whole new layer to the game.
The official patch notes are through the link. Are you excited about the Beacon update? Tell us in the comments section below.

My God! This is insane yet again.
Are Hello Games working on a new game?
@Zazu Yeah I was also a Day 1 purchaser, and it's safe to say I was so dissapointed and felt lied to... However I'm really glad they have turned it around (quite possibly the greatest come back of all time)
@Oram77 Yes — Light No Fire.
My tired eyes read the title as No Man’s Sky Bacon, and now I’m slightly disappointed. Still, given the outrageous amount of support this game has received post launch, a breakfast related update probably isn’t entirely out of the question.
@Zazu even if their new game will be in the same state NMS launched back into 2016, I won't feel robbed, ha ha.
Though I believe the team learned so much about being honest with community and how reputation works nowadays, that they will release an awesome new game once it is ready.
At this point we're practically up to a third or fourth sequel in terms of content added 😁
I tried Settlements and was disappointed by the mobile-game-like waiting. Why does this upgrade take two hours? That's a good way to make me shelve the game for 6 months. If they've fixed that though, I'm in.
I know some ps5 players want starfield but lets be honest why you want a lesser version you have this looks better has more content and i bet plays better too
I've had No Man's Sky in my backlog since September 2020.
I think this Winter (or Summer if you want to get all Northern Hemisphere about it said in Simon Miller's voice) I'm going to actually start playing it.
With all the added content, I better delete stuff off my PS5 and install No Man's Sky before then though.
This doesn't feel right to me because I only trust big publishers like Sega who sell these updates as a completely new game without any upgrade path options.
@Tomato_Goose to be fair Sean did tweet bacon strips as the hint for this update haha
I’ve been wanting to get into this game for a while. Strangley now I feel I waited too long and it’s going to be too overwhelming as a new player. A ridiculous reason to not pick it up I know, and I shall be partaking soon but the enormity of it makes me anxious!
This game certainly is becoming more appealing with every update. I just fear i might get bored if i play it. But i will probably give it a try eventually when i see it on a nice sale.
Ps5 or Switch 2 though? 🧐
What I've wanted is a morality system tied into combat encounters. And maybe this just isn't for NMS as a game, but I'd kill to be able to have Farcry-like combat encounters where you come across pirates and raiders (or even good law-abiding people like in these settlements) and take them over. Maybe I choose to turn them in to authorities or take over as their pirate captain and we terrorize the universe!
I didn't like how static NMS felt over time. I want some more role playing elements.
Also... Have they fixed absolutely awful the building interface is on consoles? 😂 It always amazes me they put out all these massive systems updates and yet the actual act of building is as finicky and crappy as ever. Like, come ON.
I never liked the settlements in NMS, it seems so counterintuitive to the purpose of a space exploration game, and got tiresome quickly.
I could be several universes on from my settlement, but I'll still get notifications that my settlement is under attack. I don't care! I didn't fly off planet because I really want to babysit a bunch of inept kids that keep bickering! I flew away because the game isn't called No Man's Daycare. It's No Man's Sky! Sky! Skkkkyyyyyyyyy!
@Oram77 Yeah a game called Light No Fire. It takes place on a single planet but the planet is bigger then are actual Earth, Sean also said he wanted things to scale to real life so mountains for instance are the size of real life mountains.
Settlement management, okay. Maybe it's time I finally buy this game. I love settlement building/management. It's what I spend the most time doing in Fallout 4.
