Pragmata lives, and will release on the PS5 next year. It’s a remarkable conclusion for the game which was announced alongside Sony’s current system in 2020, as many had expected it to be quietly abandoned like Deep Down during the PS4 era.

The title is being directed by Cho Yonghee, a former concept artist whose credits include NieR: Automata and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance – two all-time classics, for sure.

But what’s the gameplay hook? Well, it’s all about how protagonists Hugh and Diana’s abilities intertwine. While the former appears to be a more traditional military-style hero, armed with firearms and melee combat capabilities, Diana has a hint of M3GAN to her: she’s an android capable of hacking enemies and exposing their weaknesses.

“Both have their own abilities, and you’ll need to control them both – at the same time – to overcome the many obstacles you’ll face,” Yonghee explained.

“This two-in-one approach, where Hacking is key to your success, is our own unique take on combat that you’ll only find here – in Pragmata.”

So, it’s an interesting dynamic where you’re effectively controlling two characters at the same time.

We suppose there’ll be inevitable moral quandaries regarding Diana’s humanity, which could feel a bit cliché if not tackled correctly. Nevertheless, in this new era of generative AI, we suspect sci-fi stories like this one should resonate a little harder lately.
