Dying Light PS5 PS4 1

Now more than a decade old and with a sequel out, you would assume Techland had completely finished its work on its first Dying Light game. That's not the case, though, as later this week the Polish developer is releasing a free Retouched update that improves the game in certain ways.

Techland wants to stress this is not a full remaster of the original; instead, it's an update across PS5, PS4 that is "about squeezing out even more from the Dying Light you already love. It’s not a complete overhaul or remaster."

You can dig into all the details in the full blog post, but essentially, Dying Light Retouched began when the team "started increasing texture quality of surroundings and upscaling them to create a sharper, better look in the game". For a couple of examples, see the comparisons of the wooden boards and metal sheeting below:

The patch also brings with it improved lighting, physics-based rendering, and 8K ultra shadow quality, the latter of which gives surfaces a lot more depth and pop.

Original composer Paweł Blaszczak was also brought back to give the soundtrack a facelift. "We’ve woven in brand new tracks and ambient sounds throughout the game, deepening the mood and cranking up the tension as you explore. And we seriously juiced up the hit reaction audio in combat. Every swing, every crunch, every zombie takedown will sound more satisfying, more impactful."

Techland says the improvements you see in the game will vary by platform, so you can assume the game running in the backwards compatibility mode on PS5 will be better than the standard PS4 version. The free patch will release later this week on 26th June.
