Devil May Cry is the next video game franchise to get an animation adaptation, following on from Tomb Raider last year.
This one’s being produced by Korean team Studio Mir, the group behind the excellent X-Men ’97, so it has some real pedigree behind it. Capcom is also involved.
But based on this launch trailer, ahead of the show’s debut on 3rd April, fans are divided.
Set to the music of Papa Roach, the video gives us our first full introduction to protagonist Dante, and the villains he’ll be fighting against. This is deviating quite heavily from the games, but Vergil does put in an obligatory appearance towards the end.
“Dante and Vergil without their OG voices, looks whack to me,” one user said. Reuben Langdon and Daniel Southworth have both played Dante and Vergil respectively since Devil May Cry 3, although have been replaced by Johnny Yong Bosch and Robbie Daymond here.
Another fan added: “This trailer is basically the embodiment of every late 2000s AMV on YouTube.”
