Sony Reassures All That Marvel's Spider-Man 2's Release Date Is on Track for PS5

Never worry about a game getting pushed back. Give them all the time they need to release a polished game. I prefer being patient and getting a stellar game, rather than a rushed broken release! But this is welcome news all the same!

I wouldn't be surprised if we got a dedicated State of Play of Spider-Man 2 next month before the big showcase.

As everyone freaks out about a release date, I'm treating this like how Sony marketed Ragnarök, so I'm confident that the potential Showcase will have gameplay and a release date. Be patient people.

Fiscal year is important. Could still be pushed to 2024 in 23-24s Q4 😉

Honestly I'm way more excited to see what other 1st party exclusives Sony has cooking. Although I very much enjoyed the Insomniac Spider Man games despite not being a Marvel fan in the slightest.

If the rumors are Sept and Sony is saying “fiscal year”, which I’m just going to assume means Feb or March when Sony usually releases its big AAA games, I’m going to have to suggest the title of this article is overly optimistic. 🤷🏻‍♂️

@get2sammyb If it was “highly unlikely” then there was no reason for him to say “fiscal” before year, he could have simply said “this year”.

With the major game delays we’ve seen the past, oh about 5 years now, even before Covid, and w/ Sony releasing so many of their big games like GoW and Horizon after the holidays, I’d say Spider-Man 2 slipping to Feb/Mar is more likely than highly unlikely. But I suppose if I had to bet, well I wouldn’t, too close to call.🤷🏻‍♂️

I think they've learned from other big releases announcing their release dates too early and then getting backlash when delays have been announced so are waiting until they know for sure they can meet a date before announcing. I'm thinking it might be later than September now though.

Weird wording to say this fiscal year. Makes me think it’ll be next February or March.

@rjejr There was every reason for him to say Fiscal Year because he was talking to investors, not video game fans.

It will be released before the next Yearly accounts, that's the only date that matters for them.

I do agree with the comments that this may be delayed to early 2024 though. Widening of release windows usually means a delay and the current fiscal year is a larger release window than Fall 2023. Most recent example that comes to mind is the upcoming Forza Motorsport, went from "Spring 2023" to "2023".

Fiscal year can still mean into 2024 - maybe a Big March release IF they need to take some extra time. I am sure they would rather have it out before Christmas to 'SELL' more consoles and dominate the Christmas Sales charts.

Again, people seem to focus on Jan 1st - Dec 31st, even though most Companies operate in a 'Fiscal' year system and really for most Consumers, the Start of the Gaming year tends to be June and E3 as it used to give us our first indications of the games expected in the 'Fiscal' year ahead.

Even if you get a Calendar year with 'no' major releases, If they release a lot Q3/4 the year before, and Q1 the year after, they still released their games in BOTH Fiscal years - haven't 'missed' a year of releases from their perspective, but from a Consumer perspective, that calendar year looks bad. If Sony don't release any AAA games between now & Dec 31st (not counting VR games) with GoW:R being the release for 2022-23 fiscal year, and Spider-Man 2 for 23-24 Fiscal year, it could seem like Sony had NO games - but their 'year' is different...

@NathanKang @JonnyAces 100% agree with those sentiments. There are a lot of good games to play while we wait for Spider-Man 2 to come out. It’s always better to have a polished, complete game at launch, rather than having to wait for months after release for patches to fix it. We really need to stop paying to be beta testers.

Well, it’s technically a statement. Whether it’s stated anything worth stating is up for destate. They should actually de-state this and reinstate it with something that better reflects the status quo, instead of leaving us in a stasis.

Lovely to see a gaming site post a story about a game and not a failed deal.

It’s almost like making good games is a better idea.

I look forward to seeing more about games and less about deals.

This game is going to be a monster.

I am glad Spider-Man 2 is still on track.

However, based on the rest of Sony's statement, I think I am tempted to "skip" the next generation and just get a compact form-factor gaming PC for my living room.

All Microsoft games release on PC and Sony is pushing its exclusive catalogue to PC's going forward.

There is zero reason to buy either one next time. The only system I would buy is whatever Nintendo releases.

I was about to post this, glad I decided to catch up with the comments first. Yea, their statement being very careful to just say "this fiscal year" made me more worried than confident. We might not get any big original single player games from Sony this calendar year.

I am still expecting them to announce some remasters/"remakes" to pad this year, though.

@naruball Yeah, console gaming is much simpler. But when I think about what I end up paying every generation (I usually get all three consoles), sometimes I wonder if it would be better to get a good PC instead.

@naruball Its not like consoles get better optimization than PC games in average. Yes a few PC game ports are terrible, but more often than not, the PC version is the definitive version, so @GamingFan4Lyf will likely get a better average experience in that front.

I still stick to consoles because even with Steam Big Picture, I find it a pain to navigate my game library on a PC without mouse and keyboard, and mouse and keyboard are a pain to deal with on a couch.

Edit: additional advantage of PC is that your backlog rarely is threatened to become unplayable because of a generational jump.

As long as it doesn't follow the copy+paste formula from Ragnarok, I can wait. Hoping for some new gameplay elements.

@Tharsman Consoles do get the better optimised versions the vast majority of the time at optimising for a fixed system is so much easier, and PC ports have a lot of specific issues right now, like the stuttering associated with Shader Compilations on UE, DirectX 12 problems.

You also won’t get the “definitive experience” unless your PC is probably $1500+ and will need updated multiple times in a 7 year lifecycle. Not what you’re going to get from a small form factor PC for a living room cabinet.

@ChrisDeku A gaming PC is not cheap, I'll give you that much, but no, you don't have to update it that much, most games are perfectly playable at very good visual quality even on 6 year old GTX1060 cards (the most used card among Steam users.)

I have a laptop that was not cheap, but still runs most games perfectly fine. Literally the only reason I still play console is the couch experience, not the optimization.

@Tharsman I focus so much on Switch w/ it's complete lack of games after Pikmin 4 in August, and a potential Switch 2 next year, I haven't really been paying attention to PS5's lack of games besides Spiderman 2. Compared to Switch the PS5 gets so much big game 3rd party support - Madden, CoD, FFXVI, Star Wars, Hogwarts Legacy just released, Forpsoken - I don't even notice the lack of 1st party exclusives like other people do. 🤷‍♂️

I suppose i's possible both Sony and Nintendo load up on the holiday w/ remakes and remasters. It certainly feels that way w/ Switch as I'm assuming anything new after Pikmin 4, including Metroid Prime 4, is Switch 2 bound, whenever that is. Which is fine by me, I'm way behind. 😂

@rjejr I feel the same way about XBox, plenty of third party games to keep me busy. It still is odd to have a year without any big first party Sony games, I wont notice it this year (because I always wait about a year for the game to go down in price) but I'll surely notice it next year.

I have a 2020 Razer Blade 15 1660TI and it would run most recent ports worse than a PS5 at equivalent settings(it doesn’t actually have a 4k screen anyway). It was significantly more expensive.

@Tharsman I'm so far behind in my Sony games to play - Ghost of Tsushima which I own, God of War: Ragnarok which I do not - that I haven't even noticed Sony not putting anything out. I just finished Horizon Forbidden West so I could go straight into the dlc and finish it in time for Zelda to finish before Pikmin. And I keep the unopened box of Tales of Arise right next to my chair so I don't forget, on top of opened and installed but not played Kingdom Hearts 3. I'll probably never get around to buying Jedi but it does look good.

So yeah, I can wait until Feb/March for Spidey. 😉

Well yea they better. Its the only 1st party developed game thats going to release this year. It's funny because Sony is buying up these indie developers and it seems more like releases are slowing down.

This kind of crap is why games are rushed out and end up buggy messes. Let them release it when it's ready.

@rjejr I would say its mostly multi-plat owners that want to see first party exclusives. I have every platform, and play third parties preferably on XBox, or Switch if its an RPG. But also got a PS5 and would like more things to give me reasons to play it more often, because first party games and permanent third party exclusives are the only things I paly on it.

My PS5 backlog is still large enough that I am in no fear of running out of games this year, because I play most PS games on a year delay due to their high price, but this being a slow year might mean next year I might not end up playing my PS5. Well, there is likely going to be Final Fantasy XVI, I guess, that should be cheap enough next year.

@nomither6 I used to build gaming PC's back in the day and even had a good (for the time) gaming laptop for everything.

After my gaming laptop died, I just switched to solely consoles.

It didn't help I had a "best hardware" mentality where I always wanted the best GPU, CPU, RAM, etc. Consoles helped to keep that in check. Though I still got rid of my PS4 for a PS4 Pro and got rid of my X1 for a X1X.

My Surface Book 2 is good for some light gaming: it has an i7, 16GB RAM, and Nvidia 1060 GPU w 6GB VRAM, but many new games minimum requirements are beyond its capabilities.

@GamingFan4Lyf since you used to build them you’ll feel right at home then, but i’m not familiar with gaming on laptops , is it better than steam deck ? the GPU you mentioned i’d presume is very weak , but they have higher GPUs for laptops

i have a fairly good PC , isn’t the “best hardware” mentality kind of useless since cross platform games will always be held back by console ?

Never thought of it that way but it does make sense, people wanting real reasons to own each console. Nintendo to me is a first party console pretty much exclusively - Mario, Zelda, Pikmin. I mean I almost didn't really need a Switch b/c I already bought everything on Wii U. 😝 PS5 is all the 3rd party stuff and the once a year exclusive Uncharted, GoW, Horizon. I owned an Xbox One for 6 months and played Gears of War and Sunset Overdrive (which really needs a sequel). I don't play racing games or FPS so I've managed w/o an Xbox. And there's always Gamepass on PC if need be. So yeah, I can see people wanting the exclusives if they already bought the console. Me, I have too much to play as it is I guess, don't need any more. 🤷‍♂️

@nomither6 Yes it's better than Steam Deck from a raw power perspective - but absolutely destroys battery power. Probably only good for like an hour on battery if you're lucky (unless you set power profile to throttle back things and therefore required to scale back graphical settings).

I mean, seeing as how Nvidia is in the 4000 range for GPU, a 1060 is like...nothing now - even more so being the mobile GPU chipset. This laptop is also work laptop (my company doesn't mind if we do light gaming on them) and it's a few years old now.

I don't really do multiplayer games, so whether games are held back by consoles is moot for me in that particular arena.

I'd want to be able to play Cyberpunk 2077 in Overdrive RT Mode with an Nvidia 4090!

@nomither6 My current gaming pc is a laptop. It has a mobile RTX 3080 GPU, quite beefy.

The few games I play on PC, are far superior experiences on my laptop than on my PS5 or XBox for reasons beyond pixel density. Stuff like ultra-wide monitor support (I got my laptop docked) and mods make the PC versions of games simply non-brainer the definitive edition of these games, I just don't enjoy the desk experience too much and end up only playing MMOs like FFXIV or survival games like Valheim on the PC.

Honestly I don't think PC games are held back by console as much as they are held back by other low spec PCs. The devs always have the freedom to make games that wont run on those older devices, but they just cut their own market short. Even CoD runs on a potato of a PC.

Another plus of PC gaming is that you are not usually at the mercy of the dev for graphical settings. Due to the expected simplicity of console games, at best we get 2 or 3 performance modes on consoles, and that's a new thing. On PC, you can determine yourself what bells and whistles you don't care about to get the best framerate or fidelity possible.

Edit: I also have a steam deck, have not played much with it yet but my plan is to replace the Switch with it as my go-to for RPGs like Atelier. I like being able to take my RPGs on handheld mode, and Steam does a great job at syncing save data so I can always resume the game on the desk if I so desired.

@Tharsman I’m very curious about how it feels to game on a powerful laptop like yours. i’ve never thought about pc gaming on a laptop til now and now i’m just imagining playing games in my backyard or more desirable areas of my house; is that why you prefer gaming on a laptop in particular because you can be in different places ?

How does the overall experience compare to your steamdeck & is steamdeck limited to only steam games ? How’s the battery , overheating , conveniency ?

@nomither6 I honestly would never play portably with a laptop. Every gaming laptop i ever owned has been bulky, hot and loud. This specific one is the smallest I ever owned but has the huge downside of it ventilating via the keyboard, meaning I cant play games AND close the lid.

Main reason I went for the laptop is because I also do work on it, and for programming work, its useful to grab the laptop and take it anywhere.

Also of note is that mobile versions of GPUs are never as powerful as the desktop type, this thing does not hold a candle to an actual 3080 desktop card, but I never expected it to.

The SteamDeck's power does not match this at all, but it mops the floor with the Switch. It does not need to match it anyways, though, since any game on the small screen will be running at 800p.

Edit: If I decided to play portably on this thing, I would only do so in a table, and I would expect to be connected to some power outlet because the battery wont last long. I would not want this on my lap when its running a demanding game.

@nomither6 adding to my last reply: a gaming laptop is very likely going to be much more expensive than an equivalent desktop, for quite a bit less power.

For me, main reason to get a laptop over a desktop is space (if you dont have much room in or under your desk) and some extra flexibility.

You can take it on trips, you might even be able to play some non-demanding games in a flight, or demanding ones in a short flight.

Taking a laptop on a vacation and use it while in a hotel room is viable, and it is also possible to just hook them to a TV via HDMI in a hotel room.

It is a bit too cumbersome to be regularly moving it around the house (IMO) especially if the game you are going to play also plays ideally with a controller, or mouse (for me, playing Age of Empires with a trackpad is torture.) Your millage might vary on that one though.

But I cant stress it enough: gaming laptops are not lap friendly. They get HOT.

You know Insomniac works fast. Im pretty sure nearly every Playstation Studios game on PS5 has had a great not more buggy than normal launch. Continue to show the business how its done. Can’t believe how messed up Star Wars Jedi is, im sure its the publisher pushing. At least Sony waits
