Falcom has teased its next Ys game, which will be the tenth numbered title in the long running action RPG series. We've got concept art (which you can gawk at above) and some early gameplay details via Japanese publication Weekly Famitsu, as compiled by Gematsu.
We'll have to start with the headline: the next Ys game will apparently take inspiration from the now established Soulslike formula. There's mention of "steadily-paced one-on-one combat", and although Falcom president Toshihiro Kondo says that the game isn't going straight-up Souls, it does sound like it might be a more considered action title.
Other details include Ys protagonist Adol being in his younger years during this adventure, and you should expect new gameplay elements. Platforms haven't been confirmed yet, but we would assume that this project is targeting PS5 and PS4, given Falcom's most recent releases.
The last Ys game was Ys IX: Monstrum Nox, which launched for PS4 last year. Its predecessor, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana, is getting a PS5 port this autumn.
What do you want from the next Ys game? What do you make of these first details? Time a perfect dodge in the comments section below.

1st ! love Ys...get that Souls like ish out of my action JRPGs with already awesome combat!
If its got the difficulty of a souls game then this series just got ruined
Inject into my veins.
I got into the series a few years ago and only have VIII and XI left to play of the titles accessible on PS4/5 and PSP.
There will be the usual comments about difficulty wherever the buzzword Soulslike is used, but I doubt they are going for that. Probably be like the very easy Jedi Fallen Order in terms of challenge whilst being inspired by the gameplay. That said, Ark of Napishtim, Origin and especially Oath in Felghana certainly aren't easy completions themselves.
Sounds like a good way to ruin the pacing these games are known for.
I want psp Ys 1&2 compilation on PSplus!!! Not played them in a few years. Finished origins about 5 months ago...a lovely reminder of the greatness of Ys and the timelessness of that tower 😋
So next time Adol wakes up with no memories the won’t be anyone around to tell him what’s going on and he has to work it out from environmental clues?
They’ve changed the combat a couple of times in the past and it’s always come out good afterwards so I’m not too worried.
In His Younger Years The Dude Was 24 Years Old During Monstrum Nox Unless The Game Is Taking Place During The 2 Year Gap Between Lacrimosa of Dana And Ark of Napishtim I Don't See How He Would Be Any Younger.
I love the Souls games, and souls-likes (if done well), but please leave that style of combat outside of established and loved series (and this is from a non-fan of Ys).
Seems like everyone is chasing the high, especially after Elden Ring.
@Areus I’ve always wondered, do you have some sort of special keyboard that capitalizes every word or do you have to manually make it that irritating to read?
I don't think this is good news, the best thing about Ys, and one of its main features, is its fast-paced action combat.
@nessisonett Nah It's My Phone That Has Some Weird Thing Where It Capitalizes The First Letter Of Every Word.
@Areus That’s one of the most bizarre issues I’ve ever seen 😂
Please god no. Ys Lacrimosa of Dana is one of the best JRPG's I've played in decades and the battle system is absolutely perfect. This series does not need to be ruined with tedious Souls like combat.
@nessisonett That's Technology For You.
@Ryall Maybe the best adventures in life require a full frontal lobotomy after each? 😋
@Areus I'd get that seen to 😋. You using an android?
@nessisonett It could be worse. That could be the way he speaks too 😋😋😋
@Areus Am I right in thinking that Ys I is the only one which is about adol and doesn't begin with him washed up on a beach?
@KayOL77 That's The Ys Game That Started That Running Gag.
@Areus Does he not get washed up on beach on II? I may not be remembering right.
Oh for goodness sake, keep that souls like stuff away from my Ys games.
@PoopScoop this. 100% this
@KayOL77 No Because II Takes Place In The Same Area As The First Game.
Please. Please don't ruin one of my favorite JRPG series with Souls elements. I ask for so little.
@Areus AHH thanks.
Hope they take note of Tales of Arise and change up the game engine. Y's games have never looked great even at release, functional but could do so much better and the games deserve it as they are great fun.
Ys 8 and 9 are the reason I upgraded to ps+ extra. Widely regarded as some of the best action RPGs ever made. Not sure they need to tweak the formula, especially with how good Falcom is at story driven RPGs.
Well, maybe it's a slower take on the Ys formula! The early games were more like one enemy at a time not like the newer games were you take on many at once! Maybe this will work for Ys! So far I enjoyed every single game, loved some more than others but it's a series than never disappointed me!
I'm more interested in the setting! Adol looks like he's rocking a very different outfits, maybe he's like in an Asian like continent or maybe Arabia or Egypt like place, but the girl look like maybe from a Norse region! The monster look more like Horus or some Chinese thing! Hopefully we get more information soon!
They better not ruin Ys.
I don't get the Souls game hype. I detest them. Wastes of time.
I kinda hate how "souls-like" is a thing now. At least it tells me right away what not to buy. Lol
Ys x Souls huh? This should be an interesting combo!
