May 2022 NPD: PS5 Stock Issues Put Sony Back in Last

It seems the same in the UK.
You get a good month then a not so good month of Supply.
However the last couple of weeks in the UK so June have been better for supply.

This has to improve over time I'm sure. Some huge improvements later this year and into 2023 I can see happening and hopefully in 2024 PS5 can properly stretch its legs. Such a huge annoyance and frustrating time it's been these last few years for all of us. It's like the world is in recovery mode

This chart tracks revenue and not unit sales so availability of Xbox S is what is bolstering MS' sales I'd say.

It's only going to get worse. Inflation has destroyed most people's play money. Gas continues to soar. Food and goods prices are sky rocketing. Videogames are a luxury and among the first things that will get dropped by a majority.

Everything is going to take a hit. That includes your favorite pass time.

@Godot25 of course. As I said S model is widely available. I'm not disputing who is where in the charts, just that MS sales are insulated against a large drop thanks to the S, and by extention that the X (also affected by chip shortage along with the PS5) isn't necessarily outselling its direct competitor.

It's more than just demand/supply issues, as far as yoy comparisons. People in North America had stimulus money last year and inflation had not truly crept in. Now people have less money to spend. But I do think Sony will still sell through any consoles produced, I'm more worried about game sales long-term.

Ps5 supply has been great for the last couple of months in the UK, I picked up a second for the conservatory at the end of May on a whim cause my local argos had plenty...

As others have pointed, there may be more to it than mere supply constraint. This dip in spend could actually be the first sign of a steady decline in customer demand.

The gaming industry was initially heralded to be resilient when the 2008 crisis first hit, but it eventually succumbed. It won't be different this time around.

Yet ps5 was top in May for the UK, so obviously more stock was sent to Europe last month

@munstre there's a chip shortage for the X and PS5 architecture. The shortage doesn't affect the S to anywhere near the same degree.

Might be top in June as well in the UK as stock as been fairly good.
As for series s and also now x, easy to get both in the UK, you can just walk in and get one now.
So supply has might demand there.

This current gen is just annoying me. Almost 2 years in and i can't grab one off a shelf. Maybe even sale priced and bundled with a game. Then the games, still no GTA 6 and Fallout 5.

Then even if stores would have piles of PS5's it would be extremely difficult for me to part with 500 bucks for such an ugly console and also minus a web browser.

My local Target has had several XBOX series S in their store and i have been tempted, but it has no disc drive and only 500GB storage. If i go MS it will be for the also scarce series X, but then i still have to deal with a lopsided XBOX controller. Over 20 years of using symmetrical stick controllers that i can play all day pain free has this old dog reluctant to change.

Yes i am annoyed with the current gen, like why in the world is there still no remasters off Fallout 3, New Vegas, and Red Dead 1.

End of rant, back to Dying Light.

@NoCode23 if you really want Fallout 5, you need to go Xbox. It's not coming to PlayStation.

I can't see sony winning this generation no one can find a ps5 unlike xbox series x which is available everywhere I know so many people who gave up long ago & got an xbox instead

@riceNpea yiu can buy series x easily though so it's not affecting Microsoft as much. They bought more chips anyway so they won't struggle

@Milktastrophe, Bethesda XBOX exclusive is old news. However even if i have an XBOX, or the latest high performance pc i still can not play Fallout 5 as there is no Fallout 5.

as long as the scalpers playstation 5's are gathering dust thats a plus in my book.👍

@riceNpea Well. It IS outselling it's main competitor. Why it is outselling is another thing.
Facts are that Xbox managed to shrink the gap from 10 millions at this time last gen to barely 5 millions. Which is huge W for Microsoft however you are looking at it.

@Godot25 hardly surprising if the S is consistently in the shops without stock issues and the PS5 isn't.

Still not fussed over a PS5 yet. I can still happily play all games on the PS4 Pro with the odd bit of PC gaming. I'll definitely get one when FFVII Part 2 comes out but that ain't gonna be until 2023 anyway. Might even have a price reduction by then.
