Sony loves a good ol’ timed exclusive, and having pumped a chunk of change into Square Enix’s pocket for the original release of Final Fantasy VII Remake, it looks like it’s brought another briefcase to the publisher for PlayStation 5 expansion Intergrade. A new trailer for the title concludes with some small print: “Available on PS5 at least six months earlier than any other format.”
The original Final Fantasy VII Remake on PS4 was timed exclusive for a year, meaning many had expected it to launch on other formats in April, but it seems the Japanese giant has extended that deal with Intergrade, keeping the title off other consoles until at least January of next year. That’s more than 18 months after the RPG’s original release.
Expect this news to go down about as well as Buster Sword on a Flametrooper’s head. Obviously, we’re not overly fond of this practice, but PlayStation has suggested in the past that it’s going to keep on doing it because presumably it works. Feel free to sound off in the comments section below.

just like PS5 won't appear on any shelves
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi
I've had mine since December...but I don't like this practice. If it's going multiplat, let it go multiplat.
Interesting as till now all the press stuff was Episode Yuffie was exclusive to PS5 and never mentioned anything about timed exclusive.
That I was thinking this would go Avengers route, it comes to Xbox/PC but without Yuffie.
Now unsure, guess the whole package on Xbox or PC at somepoint.
I just don’t get the point of timed exclusivity. It’s a minor annoyance more than anything. PC gamers are used to waiting and Xbox gamers will take anything they can get.
No wonder Microsoft want to buy up developers.
Boooo. I was hoping for a PC release soon. I've moved on from consoles now for this gen, so I was hoping integrade and part 2 would come to PC as well as PS5. Oh well.
This should help squash any rumors of Sony flat out purchasing Square Enix, the strategy is clearly milking the cow without buying it!
@Dryster please. This is at least a delay. Them stealing Bethesda was 100x worse.
Meh. Final Fantasy doesn't belong on Xbox or PC anyway and the remake wouldn't work on a Switch.
There will be some wailing but I reckon the majority of people who game on other platforms won't give a ***** about this.
They never stole, they paid for it.
Eh what can you do...will it move more units? Not really as ps5 is sold out everywhere.
Annoying practice but buying Bethesda is way worse in terms of offense tbh
I don't get why people don't understand timed exclusivity. You may not like the practice, but its effective.
Sony should try and make the next Call of Duty timed exclusive lol
Well hey, Octopath Traveler still isnt out on Playstation platforms so fair enough.
One of the most useless and waste of money business practices Sony has falling in love with more recently. I like Microsoft's approach better of just outright buying the studio or game instead of paying to just c**k block the game for a few months.
@Col_McCafferty Final Fantasy games were first ported to PC in 1998, the year after the first game in the series arrived on Playstation. It ‘belongs’ on PC just as much as Playstation.
@nessisonett Nah, only a few PC nerds would want this game and that's just so they can give Tifa bigger breasts!
😉
@Col_McCafferty Well there are 25 million FFXIV players, a majority of which are on PC. Plus Japanese franchises have traditionally sold well on Steam. And it’s a remake of Final Fantasy VII which would automatically make it popular. It would undoubtedly sell well on PC.
Since it's a ps5 exclusive I hope ff7 intergrade will have quick loading time and dualsense support like resident evil 8 😃
How much do you wanna bet PS4 owners get a downgraded version of the bonus episode after the exclusivity period ends? It just doesn't make sense to ignore that massive playerbase unless your game is truly next-gen. And this isn't. It's FF7R with some settings dialed up.
@nessisonett Games sell the majority of their copies at launch, right? You'll still lose some sales to people who wait for games to go to other systems, but the hardcore fans are usually going to go where their desired games go at launch. It makes more sense in the console space where you have to buy a specialized piece of hardware, thus giving you access to that ecosystem and removing the largest psychological (and monetary!) hurdle to continued investment in that ecosystem.
@Ralizah Anyone that knows anything about the industry will wait at least a year before writing off a game as truly exclusive at this point. The only games I can think of that I truly thought were lost to exclusivity but eventually made the jump were Persona 4 Golden and the Yakuza series. And Yakuza in particular has totally blown up in the PC scene.
@ILikeStake
They do.
They just react to 'outrage, go' when they are told to. As if its anything new.
Haha
Console waaarrrr...
I didn’t like it when Microsoft did this with Tomb Raider and I don’t like this crap now.
@nessisonett Well tough, they're going to have to wait even longer before they get to play it.
😝
@nessisonett Final fantasy become huge after ff7 launch on playstation, most people don't even remember the pc port. Also it sells best on playstation.
If that means Yuffie is coming to PS4 this Winter I consider this good news.
@nessisonett If you're a massive fan of [insert franchise], though, you're probably not going to want to wait a year to play. Tbh, I can't imagine having waited a year to play FF7R. Or waiting a year to play Monster Hunter Rise, for that matter, even if Switch wasn't already my preferred platform.
While some people are going to stick with certain consoles/manufacturers exclusively, many more people are going to prefer dropping a few hundred extra dollars to not have to deal with the irritation of a bunch of big releases skipping their preferred platform for often indeterminate lengths of time. Granted, I think it probably worked better in previous generations, as timed exclusives usually stayed exclusive for years, and the public wasn't as wise to the nature of these deals, but I do think it'll remain an effective tool for Sony, even if it ultimately doesn't make the industry any better.
Seems people react to this randomly, but happens all the time.
@nessisonett "anyone that knows anything"
That's 0.5% of the market. That's the answer to why publishers are doing this.
Why would anyone with decent PC and some sense pay full price for a game only to play it on subpar hardware lmao
I played the Miles Morales game at my mates and he asked if I wanted 60fps or 4k LOOOOOL 😂😂😂😂 I stopped playing and said I'll wait for the PC port haha
@Spyroescape
Because you are not playing Miles Morales @4K/60fps with RayTracing on a $400 PC either. Port or no port.
6 months, one year, whatever lmao, still not playing until it comes to pc
No problem with this.final fantasy 7 is and was always a PlayStation game.even final fantasy 7 remake feels like that also.word up son
they're so anti consumer and should be legally stopped from doing this, they either acquire the studios and make them first party or stay the hell away from multiplatform games, they're so cheap and have no dignity. there's a fine line from business and this. I expect this to change in the near future. the law will finally get to this issue sooner or later
@playstation1995 not a single final fantasy is a playstation game, they don't own it. it's square enix's IP and it's multiplatform. Sony is too cheap to buy square enix
@BRUTALSAM not too cheap to do it. They cant do it. Microsoft has a massive market cap advantage. They can afford to buy up publishers. Sony cant. So they have to go another route.
Whichever way you look at it. Its not just Sony. They are all at it locking games to platforms just doing it differently.
If the law was going intervene they would have to do it to all.
@Agramonte Yh well, my PC doesn't cost $400.
@uptownsoul I will give you the Stalker 2 example, exclusive for a poultry 3 months almost seems like Microsoft pulling a prank on everyone and yes it's stupid if they do it too.
"(Temporary keeping a game off competing platforms = Bad?...But permanently keeping a game off competing platforms =Ok?)"
From a business point of view yes! If you're going to be paying lots of money at least make sure said game stays within your platform.
I would love a total of how much money Sony has thrown at time exclusives the last couple of years, I bet is more than what 1-2 whole studios would cost to acquire.
I am not a fan of third party exclusives, but I expect this to continue both because it presumably works and because making individual games exclusive is much cheaper than the Microsoft approach of just buying a whole publisher and making those games exclusive.
@BRUTALSAM What are you talking about getting the law involved? Lol. The law will not get to this. That's just silly. Square Enix and Sony came to this agreement mutually. No one is being forced. Square Enix can negotiate when and where they make their game available based on their own business decisions. Talk about being an entitled gamer. Jeez Louise.
Did Sony actually extend exclusivity or was this always the plan and people just made assumptions about the series going multi-platform when Intergrade launches? With the way people and the media were talking about the game going multi-platform as fact, I can see Sony opting to add verbiage to the trailer to end those rumors.
The good thing is that this way Square can focus their development on one platform and then port to the others later.
They have the gall to do this when people are still having trouble buying PS5s.
@Spyroescape Play it with Dualsense or no dualsense? I’ll take the dualsense.
I don't mind exclusives as it differentiates products, but only if the game was either fully funded by the platform holder or wouldn't exist without the platform holder. I'm not a fan of games being restricted just because one company pays money to restrict access to other platforms.
Game Pass has been getting a Final Fantasy game every 3 months which if projected forward would mean the final Final Fantasy game from the November 2019 Game Pass announcement (Lightning Returns) would come to Game Pass in February 2022. So FFVII Remake Intergrade probably comes to Xbox in May 2022.
I own both a PS5 and a XSX, and whereas I am primarily an Xbox fan, I don't have a problem per se with timed games or dlc, my issue comes from how Sony has handled the whole upgrade system. Why is it that people who got the game from PS+ can't get the upgrade, despite pretty much any XB game that has been offered for an upgrade is alotted for free (regardless of getting the game for free or not)? Heck, even with Spider Man, people didn't get the upgrade regardless of if you bought it or not on PS4. Not even mentioning how Xbox just slapped a (formerly) first party MLB Sony developed game on Game Pass, and Sony has remained silent. This kind of practice is gonna hurt Sony in the long run.
@Ralizah I don’t know, I remember Dragon Age Inquisition having next-gen only expansions. And the first of those, “The Jaws of Hakkon” was a limited Xbox exclusive for like a month or two. Weird, weird stuff.
Just give us part 2 already & let everyone else have a crack at part 1.
And enough with the "well Xbox did......" joke's old!
@Ralizah I hope it will get a ps4 but not entirely sure it will. I was always accepting of the fact that part2 and onward would be next gen exclusives but dlc for the first part is a kick in the stomach tbh, I'd rather they didn't put it on + and just release the DLC on ps4.
I wonder how much Sony paid for timed-exclusivity, considering Epic paid $146M just to have Borderlands 3 exclusive to their store. I'm not itching to play this game, so I can wait until all parts are released.
@uptownsoul MS buying Bethesda is no different from Sony buying gaming studios with IP and timed exclusivity will never be a good thing, no matter what platform is doing it. The only good thing about MS with Bethesda is that they will still release their games on PC and not making it totally exclusive only to Xbox.
@BrainHacker There's a big difference. Many people aren't complaining because it isn't on XB, but rather that Sony shunned the PS4 by having timed exclusive DLC on the PS5. I gaurentee you that after the 6 months, it will be available on PS4 as DLC, which means Sony is saying "Here is a non-next generation game with DLC available only to the small number of people with next generation hardware (for six months only!). It would be like Nintendo putting the DLC for Breath of The Wild only on Switch for 6 months over Wii U.
@Snoober I think I've read somewhere that Intergrade won't be releasing on PS4 because it's optimized for the PS5. The timed-exclusivity deal of Sony for FF7R has already expired, so this could only mean that SE can finally release FF7R to other platforms and this might be the reason why Sony extended the exclusivity deal for Intergrade. It doesn't make sense for Sony to pay SE just to block a DLC to PS4 owners.
square enix hates their fans.
@uptownsoul I think it's because Sony is more aggressive compared to Xbox. it also helps that Xbox is excluding PC gamers on their timed-exclusivity deals - which is only because they can sell more copies of their games outside of the Xbox ecosystem. I don't believe any of these gaming publishers is pro-consumer. if Xbox has the same amount of user base as much as Playstation then they would do the same thing. There is a reason why Xbox saw the potential of the PC market and mobile devices with Gamepass and xCloud.
This has to do with Integrade. It likely has nothing to do with Final Fantasy 7 Remake's exclusivity being extended since they are technically two separate releases and it mentions PS5 specifically (Final Fantasy 7 Remake is technically a PS4 game, not a PS5 game).
The fact that the Remake is still not on another console is likely just Square Enix not bothering, which is a shame for others since it was a really enjoyable experience.
I loved this game a lot but screw this.
This is not anything to celebrate this is absolute bullsh*t.
Shame on Sony and shame on SE for screwing over Xbox and PC fans.
I game on everything so I couldn't care less about this.
@wiiware
I owned the PC and Playstation versions of the game.
I preferred it on PC and there was a huge online community dedicated to the PC version. All sorts of good mods.
@TheRedComet Most of the sales is from playstation though, that's all squareenix thinks when signing exclusivity deals. Their last game nier remake sold 89% more on playstation, it's like tomb raider psone, saturn got it first but nobody cares because it's sells best on psone.
Some of the comments.
😒
Xbox players like all that Halo, sci-fi shoot em up *****. If they liked JRPGs they wouldn't buy an Xbox.
And PC gamers? Meh, who cares. They just want to mod all the female characters but once they're bored with being perverts they'll go back to their strategy games.
Too many people on here just wish to attack Sony whatever they do or don't do and act as if the other platforms are beyond reproach. If you feel this way then maybe this site isn't for you.
The remake isn't appearing on pc for a while yet isn't it
@ILikeStake Maybe if your console is actually on store shelves and has stock.
@wiiware of course it will
@wiiware exactly.
@ArcticSin have fun waiting then
@nessisonett it belongs on PC a year after PlayStation. 😂
I feel really bad for Xbox and PC gamers, but at least it's not a permanent exclusive?
Not that it means much anymore with Days Gone and other titles on PC, with more to come in the future.
@ILikeStake is there any evidence that it is effective, though?
I don't doubt that it is for games like COD, but are we sure that it's effective in each and every case?
@ArcticSin read several of your comments and all you talk about is PC PC PC PC. Genuine question: what's the point of visiting push square?
@naruball I like to keep up on Playstation news
@ArcticSin makes so much sense
@KilloWertz Sony directly funded the FF7 remake, the exclusivity agreement is likely longer than anyone knows and likely included a clause that SE couldn't work on producing the game for other platforms.
@uptownsoul An Xbox isn't just doing time exclusive they have right out come and said Bethesda new games won't come out on the ps5, that worst than time exclusivity.
