The Sonic Central broadcast didn't contain too much in the way of new games, but what is exciting is the promise of a new retro collection. Sonic Origins is pencilled in to release next year, and contains all the Genesis Mega Drive classic platformers you'd expect — and that finally includes a constant absentee.
The collection will contain Sonic 1, 2, 3, Sonic & Knuckles, and Sonic CD. Sonic 3 has famously been left out of products like this in the past, likely due to licensing disputes over the game's music. However, SEGA has made it happen for Sonic Origins, meaning you can play the complete adventure in one package.
No platforms have been announced, but it's probably safe to assume it'll show up on PlayStation 5 and/or PS4. We're promised more details soon, which hopefully means a proper release date. Are you excited for Sonic Origins? Tell us in the comments section below.

Sonic 1, 2 and CD seem to all be based on the Taxman remasters, of which 1 & 2 are currently only available on mobile. Hope S3&K gets the same treatment.
Ooooh! A dig at the Genisis there. I like it!
Wow. That’s not a mind blowing collection is it the same collection of sonic games we have had on platform after platform with 3 thrown in
@TheFrenchiestFry Hopefully. The lack of widescreen in the trailer is a concern, but there was an original gameplay disclaimer, and they're releasing this next year, which implies that there is actually more work to be done.
Sega genesis playa.man memories.word up son
I still have Sonic Jam for my Saturn, and Sonic CD on PS3. Seeing the wide screen in the trailer though, I wonder if 1&2 are Christian Whithead's updated versions available on mobile.
@Orpheus79V the "original gameplay" disclaimer and the fact they said they had more to reveal about the collection at a later time makes me think they're not ready to show Sonic 3 & Knuckles running in the Retro Engine like the other 3 games. Maybe when that's all sorted out they'll come out with a big trailer showing all the games looking as they're supposed to.
Day one for me being able to Replay Sonic 3 & Knuckles without having to dig out the Mega Drive is more than enough reason to buy it.
@thefrenchiestfry yeah hopefully 3&K gets the same treatment
Played all these games to death and have them stored on the Xbox (including 3) I don't think this whole idea will sell well tbh.
If they remastered them all and added some new features and a few new levels to extend it a bit, I think it would generate a little more attention.
Just wish we could get a little more, where are the GBA games?
@EquiinoxGII They mention new content and stuff.
Ok so this will have the secret level for Sonic 2 ! Finally not relegated to smartphones
@Orpheus79V I know, but what new content? This is sega.. haha
@Feena these Whitehead versions were ported to the Xbox 360 back in the day, I'm pretty sure it's available on there.
The Sonic game I'd really like them to remaster is Sonic 06 as the game was generally rushed to production and definitely has room for improvement
Why in the world can’t Sega include Knuckles Chaotix in just one of these collections? I’m not under the impression it’s some kind of all-time classic, but I never owned a 32X, so it would be nice to play it at least once.
Can you play as Knuckles in 2 and 3 like you could on the mega drive with the double cartridge? Also, I had the ps2 (or was it ps3) collection that had the game gear titles? Mean Bean Machine is a must, they included it briefly in Mania for a reason!
Jesus !
How many more times can they flog a dead hedgehog ?
This will probably be an unpopular opinion but I can't help but feel underwhelmed by this announcement. The selling point is obviously 3&Knuckles and CD available on all of the most recent modern consoles. I think (not sure) that CD is BC on Xbox anyway.
It is cool if they end up being the enhanced ports and if it is a relatively budget release, I will definitely get it. I feel like they could have shoved a load more games on there though like Sonic 3D, Spinball, Knuckles Chaotix, Sonic 4: Episodes 1&2, the master system/game gear versions, the game gear exclusives etc.
I know it's an "origins" collection but it would have been cool if SA1&2 and Shadow/Heroes were included as well as Sonic Advance 1-4, even the Saturn games would be welcome. The arcade game SegaSonic would be especially welcome.
Literally all that plus any other spin offs I may have missed (Drift sticks out in my mind, the DS games would be cool too if they could work out a decent screen arrangement) would be worth a full price release in my opinion.
Well, maybe they have more to announce in future!
Sega is getting just as bad as Nintendo. They have an entire history of games to pull from, but just keep releasing the same tired titles from the same ancient systems.
Time to buy them yet again haha
It would be good if they included the Master System / Game Gear versions but this does not seem to be the case.
Why aren't we getting a Whitehead version of 3 & Knuckles as well? Like common SEGA
@Orpheus79V @TheFrenchiestFry it's been confirmed on Twitter that Sonic 3 and Knuckles will be Widescreen, so those games we saw aren't the versions we'll be playing https://twitter.com/KatieChrz/status/1397972387870642178?s=19
I was sold with Sonic CD
Anyone remember when they released a collection of like 40 genesis games? It had most of not all of those Sonic games. Now that was a good deal.
I remember queuing up outside Game when I was a lot younger than now for Sonic 3.Those were the days.
Will definitely be picking this up.All these games are so much better than the 3d Sonics.
God I hate Sega. Not much better than Konami in my eyes. We will never get another Shining Force or Dragon Force game because they are too busy re-releasing Sonic crap over and over.
Hate. It's how I really feel.
I always liked these game but never learned how not to suck at them big time lol
Bring back Sonic & All Stars Racing and Transformed! Those games have been languishing on the PS3 for too long!
@hypnotoad I've brought sonic mega collection on GameCube, PC, PS2 (plus), megadrive collection ps3, and PS4 megadrive collection so I have these games multiple times over, I don't think I really need this collection again honestly.
Oh and the admittance of sonic on the 32x is a disappointment, they could have squeezed that in too
@ralphdibny what you are asking is a little too much honestly even if they added all those games the price would have been quite expensive.
Sonic 3D, Spinball, Knuckles Chaotix although these games could have been included also, and there is also the fact that sega did release a gems collection much later with the additional sonic games like sonic R too
Sonic 4 episode 1&2 would have been a separate release imo but a remaster of both games for current gen systems would have been welcomed too
@JapaneseSonic I don't know. To be fair I probably never gave them enough time but it was super fun going right at full speed until suddenly there were spikes on a wall or something
My local Tesco had some Sonic t-shirts once so I own one now. Sonic looks good on t-shirts.
@MidnightDragonDX Yes, but will it allow the cartridge combo? The combo is a hugely complete platforming experience.
@JapaneseSonic I actually had a really cool sonic t shirt, wore it all the time but the thing worn out, had to chuck it, maybe I should get a new shirt one day lol
If it included Knuckles Chaotix I would’ve buy it day one since I have no way to play that game, but nope sega always do the same collection for the billion time
@huyi yeah I know :/ I'm probably just making up for the underwhelming nature of it with an offer that would make me feel overwhelmed!
How about we split the difference and I suggest some collections that would make me feel "whelmed".
"Origins" - all mega drive, master system and game gear sonic games (including spin offs) - sonic 1-3& knuckles enhanced ports with the rest being emulated. Also CD and knuckles Chaotix...
"Middle era" - all the Saturn, arcade and Dreamcast games including Sonic Pocket Adventure from the neo Geo pocket colour
"Modern" - all of the PS2 era games such as Heroes, Shadow, the GBA, DS and PSP games including all spin offs. I wouldn't mind throwing in secret rings and black Knight from the wii
All 3 collections would be at the higher end of budget releases, the modern era collection may push into a standard price release.
But yeah, there's so much that could have been done. The last truly great Sonic collection to come out was Mega Collection and by extension it's Plus variant. Gems collection was a bit underwhelming to be honest. This new collection just smacks of that minimal DS collection we got that had like 2 or 3 games on it
this is disgusting . no new games , absolutely nothing new. rebuying the same crap , over , and over , again , decade after decade . this is f##### garbage news . i hope someone buys the license to sonic because they have no idea what to do with sonic anymore nor do they care . its not the freaking 90's anymore ; looking back on past accomplishments while you're in a slumber now is pathetic and just breeds laziness.
fyi - the 90's was 30 years ago. THIRTY ! god , move on.
@Wazeddie22 yeah because sonic adventure 1 & 2 are critically acclai- i mean hated by the fanbase . the worst sonics ever , i agree. its not like a huge bunch of people weren't begging for a sonic adventure 3 or anything for over 10 years ..
Milk Sonic Classics again that's have been released in previous platforms so much, yet they sit on games like Skies of Arcadia Legends and not once not once considered releasing that on Switch if Nintendo still own the license to it, if not PS4 and Xbox
@nomither6 You do know I was just stating my own opinion?I'm well aware of the huge fanbase for the Sonic Adventure games.Personally I enjoyed Sonic Adventure but was never thrilled by it so never bothered with 2.
Hopefully they will add the Master System games. And maybe some spin offs like Sonic Spinball.
@Wazeddie22 woow , that explains it . you're missing out on SA2 .
hmmm... another barebones release of the same old genesis games. we have had more than enough of this already over the past 3 decades. this is such a lame and by the numbers announcement that i can't find a single cell in my body that gives a *****
@Nakatomi_Uk seriously. my worry is that the source code of skies of arcadia is long lost and that is the reason it has never been re-released or remastered? regardless, it is a real shame.
@ralphdibny you are not alone. not by a long shot. this is the most underwhelming news from sega in a long time. they announced more compilations for games that can already be had in 5 or 6 different ways at this point. a remaster of sonic colours... remaster of virtua fighter 5... nobody really cares about this crap. people want a way to play panzer dragoon saga or dragon force or guardian heroes or the shining force games among others (which are all trapped on the saturn after all these years)... boggles the mind why they threw all these games under the bus. skies of arcadia as well...
Lol. I can't wait to buy the same games for the 8th time!
Genesis sounds way cooler than Mega Drive. 👍
@Porco Yet I wouldn't put it past Sega to have to lost the code to be honest they all seem to be doing it. It must cost so much money to have it stored somewhere because for a game like SoAL it sold loads of copies and now a physical disc GC version can cost up to £50+
@Nakatomi_Uk I don't get this so called difficulty in emulating the lost games. Surely they could reverse engineer the code from the physical product. It can't be that hard.
Hard pass, let me know when they re-release Sonic Adventure 1 & 2.
