After teasing it would be taking advantage of the PlayStation 5's power, Bugbear Entertainment has confirmed a current-gen version of Wreckfest is currently in the works. It'll be out for PS5 on 1st June 2021, but there isn't a free upgrade for owners of the game on PS4. Upgrading to the PS5 version will set you back $9.99. On its own, Wreckfest on PS5 will cost £34.99/$39.99.

While that will be disappointing news for those who already own a copy of the game, this PS5 upgrade does sound fairly substantial. You'll be getting 60 frames-per-second at a 4K resolution, support for the DualSense controller's haptic feedback, and much faster load times. There'll also be dynamic dirt shown on vehicles, improved shadows, particles, and environment lighting, textures will be displayed at a higher resolution, and there'll be more foliage surrounding the track. Finally, Godrays have been added and so too have visual effects for skidmarks. Multiplayer sessions will now also support up to 24 players.

Again, this sounds like a decent upgrade to what was already a pretty good racer back when it launched on PS4 in August 2019. One complaint from the 7/10 Push Square review included long load times, so this new PS5 version should fix that flaw. It's going to be tough for those who already snagged a copy to look past that $10 upgrade charge, however.
