After teasing it would be taking advantage of the PlayStation 5's power, Bugbear Entertainment has confirmed a current-gen version of Wreckfest is currently in the works. It'll be out for PS5 on 1st June 2021, but there isn't a free upgrade for owners of the game on PS4. Upgrading to the PS5 version will set you back $9.99. On its own, Wreckfest on PS5 will cost £34.99/$39.99.
While that will be disappointing news for those who already own a copy of the game, this PS5 upgrade does sound fairly substantial. You'll be getting 60 frames-per-second at a 4K resolution, support for the DualSense controller's haptic feedback, and much faster load times. There'll also be dynamic dirt shown on vehicles, improved shadows, particles, and environment lighting, textures will be displayed at a higher resolution, and there'll be more foliage surrounding the track. Finally, Godrays have been added and so too have visual effects for skidmarks. Multiplayer sessions will now also support up to 24 players.
Again, this sounds like a decent upgrade to what was already a pretty good racer back when it launched on PS4 in August 2019. One complaint from the 7/10 Push Square review included long load times, so this new PS5 version should fix that flaw. It's going to be tough for those who already snagged a copy to look past that $10 upgrade charge, however.

Sold, this game is great but it needs 60fps!
bought this in a sale last year so I wouldn't mind paying a little for the upgrade. A quality meaty racing game offers a lot of gameplay value imo.
Weird that Xbox Series X already had its next gen update for this and it was free.
Maybe the adaptive triggers were more work.
@awp69 It's important to clarify that the Xbox version is not a native Xbox Series X version. It's a backwards compatibility patch rather than what this is.
@get2sammyb Exactly! The game is really fun but you can feel how restricted it is by last gen hardware...
@LiamCroft Well, regardless, it’s 4K 60 FPS. I’ll stick with it as it runs and looks beautiful. And load times are very fast.
Normally I'd crucify this practice, paying for upgraded graphics and load times which is provided free in other games.
But there are some additional enchantments
Nah, I own it and this seems fair. Still not really trying to get a PS5 any time soon but whenever I do a $10 upgrade won't kill me I'm sure.
Sounds worth it and assume it won't be long until game+PS5 upgrade will be in a sale. Have it on PC since pre-ordering in 2013 and doing my bit (not a lot) to get the Steam Greenlight go-ahead at the time. It really is a great game. Also loved the 'original' Bugbear Flatout series, that got continued by others (not as good) Wreckfest being the spiritual successor.
Excellent, perfect excuse to drop back in.
I presume there is also a new PS5 trophy list?
I assume then they will be locking the backwards compat version to a lower more feeble FPS, I wonder what it would be just uncapped
I'm hoping there will be an option to transfer save games. I poured hundreds of hours into Wreckfest on PS4 and don't want to lose all this progress.
That’s a bit cheeky I think. Love the game and probably will pay but it’s a very bare game and not the most polished of experiences so to charge for that experience with some standard next gen extras is a little off.
@Total_Weirdo It’s so much fun 😎
@eltomo Does it include all the content released in the season passes?
F*ck that. Greedy.
@eltomo No, do not condone or reward this behavior.
Played this on my XBox One, and the load times are SO painful. It got so bad between the load times and the frame drops during a race with a lot of cars on the screen at the same time, that I stopped playing.
Tried it on my PS5 thanks to a $1 month of PS Now, and the load times (PS4 edition from an external SSD) are a lot better, though still leave plenty of room for improvement. Seems to be fewer frame rate drops, too. But I would dearly love the enhancements they're talking about. Wonder if the PS5 version will also make PS Now...is anything in Now a PS5 edition?
I'll be looking for this on sale, I think. Looks like a fair amount of fun, especially with even better load times.
Now this is an upgrade I’ll gladly pay for!
not missing much, didnt care for the game at all. poor excuse for a destruction derby
Over on PureXbox they were all poking fun at PlayStation for the fee to upgrade and calling Sony greedy.
Only for it to be confirmed later by the developer that they have to pay too for a "true" next gen upgrade. Bet they feel stupid now.
I think this is totally fine.
Heck, I'll pay for a brand new copy to show my appreciation. It's a very fun game.
