Ubisoft has detailed its rather daunting plans for Assassin's Creed Valhalla. The open world adventure will receive not one, but two "massive" expansions in 2021 as part of the game's season pass, and both sound really interesting.
The first is titled Wrath of the Druids, and it's aiming for Spring 2021. It'll take place in Ireland, where Eivor will be tasked with hunting down a particularly deadly group of cultists. It sounds like some supernatural shenanigans are on the cards.
After that, in Summer 2021, we're getting the second expansions: The Siege of Paris. It'll be Valhalla's take on the infamous Viking siege of the French capital, and it'll apparently feature new gameplay activities as well as huge battles.
As previously reported, the season pass will also include an exclusive bonus quest titled The Legend of Beowulf, which will be available at launch next month.
But even without snapping up the season pass, it sounds like players will have a lot to look forward to. Ubisoft says that free "seasonal content" updates will be dropped throughout the next year or so, with the first update landing by the end of 2020. These updates will bring new gameplay mechanics and systems as well as activities.
All in all, it sounds like Assassin's Creed Valhalla is going to be a gigantic time sink. Are you in? Hop aboard your longship in the comments section below.

This makes me miss Unity even more, such an underrated gem.
I don't wanna be a negative niggle but this game looks so stiff and unaesthetically pleasing
For all the hate Ubisoft gets (fair enough, at times), you've got to admit that it generally does a great job of supporting its games. AC Odyssey's support was impeccable, and it's turned games like For Honor and Rainbow Six Siege into huge ongoing titles.
Pretty high expectations for Valhalla — the expansions sound great.
Sweet, just like with Odyssey.
Well, then I guess I’ll be waiting for the complete edition before purchase.
Hate it when games do this (which is all the time now). I would like to play the Witcher 3 DLC and horizon DLC, and Spider-Man DLC, but by the time it comes out I’ve played 10 other games and would need to start again as I can’t remember all of the base game.
Still, at least expansions will be cheaper for me. Unless they use the disgusting tactic insomniac did of not releasing DLC on disc, even later editions, to force people to buy with horrendous digital prices.
@Medic_Alert I'm gonna give this a try, played it on PC and wanted to break everything because of the countless bugs
I wish they'd port the first AC, its now the only one missing on modern PS platforms.
@DonJorginho Unity has great mechanics, combat, and customizability(a lot of people erroneously say Origins started this). The story was a been-there-done-that and there was almost nothing to actually do in the game. The focus on multiplayer elements is what tainted the overall experience. A better story and more variety in the quests would have made it one of the greats.
Syndicate was just awful, all the good stuff from Unity was stripped away and replaced with nothing. It is by far the worst AC game in the main series.
@Medic_Alert
Really? I’m not a big Ubisoft fan, only games I really remember playing from them this gen were Rayman Legends and Child of Light.
Well, that’s even worse then, but we know why they do it: to try to kill the used game market. Both not allowing the full game for physical purchase and drip feeding people so they don’t sell or trade back a physical disc for over a year.
@Orpheus79V I played AC1 a while back through backwards compatibility on the One X and it blew my mind how good the game looked and felt. The textures, framerate, and even mechanics felt so much better than the original release.
Absolutely hyped for this game and to be honest I found all the expansions for Odyssey even more exciting and fun than the main game so I'm definitely buying the season pass.
@Medic_Alert bought a used copy for 6€ because of that video ^^
Planned DLC and post launch content just means another good reason not to buy at launch for me. Will wait for GOTY or sales.
@Medic_Alert Delete the patches i guess is the only option.
@thefourfoldroot Liveservice the way too make you a slave of Companies. A fully digital future too control us completely.
@Medic_Alert they did it with one of their farcry games which included farcry 3 remaster in the season pass and they are including the original watchdogs game in the watchdogs legion season pass so they may start doing it more often, shame no ac game though with this one in the season pass.
@Medic_Alert Assassin’s Creed 2’s PC port included the DLC when I played it last month. The original also has a Director’s Cut edition. Plus the remaster of AC3 includes the old season pass stuff.
These both sound great, I like that there’s a historical one and a supernatural one, just like Origins.
@Medic_Alert Assassin’s Creed II had a GOTY edition on PS3. Black Flag has a GOTY edition called the Jackdaw edition on PS4, Xbox One and PC. Origins has a Gold edition on disc.
@Medic_Alert I assume this was it? I dunno if it’s a code or on disc though, in all fairness, games don’t even ship with anything close to the latest version these days, never mind with DLC.

@Medic_Alert Isn't Unity effectively unplayable without a patch though? I recall it was an utterly devastatingly broken mess on launch to the point Ubisoft had to apologize for it and it wasn't really playable until launch. My PS4 copy wouldn't even LOAD without the patch.
@nessisonett
Problem with codes are they destroy the second hand market for these games. If complete editions released at a much lower price to account for the minimal additional with that would be one thing, but...
This is on my radar but with Cyberpunk out at the same time I don't really have time to play both, especially when I'm getting Sackboy and Spider-Man at the same time too. I'll probably pick this up around Christmas or early next year
Bit of a shame they didn't explore other parts of the UK like Wales & Scotland, or parts of South-west England.
Still, seems good this time around with no mythical worlds etc like in Odyssey
@Medic_Alert @thefourfoldroot While it’s disappointing, I’m not sure anyone can blame Ubisoft for not printing a whole new run of discs with the DLC on-disc just for the benefit of second-hand buyers. I guess the days of playing a complete game off a disc are just behind us, especially with games needing to install onto the hard drive anyway. At this point, they’re mostly glorified licenses if your download speed is fast enough to mostly keep up with disc install speeds.
@YeoSprings You must have missed the article a few days ago detailing the mythical worlds in this game 😂
@nessisonett
But that’s the thing, they do make a new run of discs with new cases and Gold Edition or whatever printed on it. They just force you to use a code to download additional content because, by offering it only digitally, they cut out the used market. It would be very easy to just have that content on the disc, or available as a free download for anyone who has the disc in the console.
Why so many huge games coming out at the end of the year?
@thefourfoldroot Considering the scale of the DLC for Origins and Odyssey, two already large games, it might have pushed the game onto two discs, which would create far too expensive overheads for an already released game. I’m also fairly certain that due to the PS Store’s infrastructure, the idea of it being offered as a free download if you have the disc inserted just would create too many vulnerabilities including the ability to distribute the disc for the sole purpose of installing the DLC for free. Someone feel free to correct me but I’m pretty sure that the PS Store doesn’t detect what disc is inserted and so there would have to be a fundamental shift in the way the PS Store is designed. Plus, PS Store purchases are tied to your account unlike discs and therefore you could theoretically own that DLC forever despite having bought a disc, which is not how physical editions should really work. I just think there are a whole load of issues that would arise from that system unless Sony completely changed their infrastructure.
@nessisonett
I don’t think it would need any change to the infrastructure because discs are already used as verification for unlocking a game download. Could be wrong though.
@thefourfoldroot The difference is that the game only boots if the disc is in. DLC on the other hand is stored in a separate folder using a different title key IIRC. Therefore you would either have to create a new app that includes all the data of the DLC like a separate SKU would do, you would have to give the user unlimited access to the DLC after an initial verification from the disc or Sony would have to create a whole new system in place for this exact situation.
@nessisonett
I’ll take your word for it. I thought the DLC is only available if you have license for the main game, and you only have license for the main game if you have the disc. So...not seeing the issue, but I’m not technically minded so I’ll just presume you are correct and there is an unreasonable technical hurdle to overcome.
@thefourfoldroot Oh no, you can purchase DLC for games you don’t even own which is a strange thing to do but it’s possible. So in that sense, the PS Store doesn’t work that way. Plus you can buy digital versions of games that you already own on disc and have installed on the PS Store.
@nessisonett
Sure, I just mean that they can use the disc as verification that the DLC can be unlocked for free, just as it is used to allow the download from the store infrastructure. I just don’t see why a disc can’t be made that allows authority for the dlc download as it does the game.
Looks good. Happy I got the gold edition. Shame there isn't a remaster of AC1 though. Would be nice to play the whole series on PS4
I dig it.
Honestly if it weren't for Yakuza and Cyberpunk, I would be getting this ASAP.
Normallly I’d wait for this to hit bargain bin prices but after building a gaming pc and using Uplay+ I’ll get the gold version for free!!
Hit me up if you play on pc and want a free code for this!!
Pretty much what I was expecting...very similar to Odyssey. I pre-ordered the Standard edition on PS4...so I'll likely get the Season Pass closer to time of release for the new expansion (or if it goes on sale before then). If Valhalla is anything like Odyssey, then I'll be playing it for awhile anyways.
Really enjoyed Origins and Odyssey, thought they both had good post launch support and content. So, as this looks similar but with Vikings I'll probably go for the Gold Edition. Has Ubi confirmed any where if the saves transfer from PS4 to PS5?
@theMEGAniggle nice joke
This is why I usually wait for all DLC to release, then wait 2+ extra years for the complete edition to get dirt cheap.
@Medic_Alert You might be right im not 100% sure is it optional too install patches? Can you say i dont want too updates too be automatic?
I read it as Wrath of the Dudes, not kidding 😂
By the way I don't get why Ubisoft insists on making such humongous games and even keep on adding on top.
I know, personal preference and whatnot, but I find a shorter, denser experience with no fat way more memorable than the endless grind Ubi games are.
Lately I've been playing Far Cry 4, and, while a lot of fun, I left it behind after 20 hours cause I had no motivation to see any more than what I had already seen, even though I've seen like 1/5 of the map. And that's just because it's all copied and pasted a thousand times, instead of a few discrete experiences.
@Taylorzombie I'm here all day
@carlos82 Around Christmas or not too long after one of the dlc packs is the best time to pick up an Ac game lately. Bought both origin's and Odyssey's special editions on sale, gold for origins and ultimate (don't buy this one) for odyssey. I'm kind of hoping they give us another whole remastered game as part of the dlc because honestly that made Odyssey worth a lot more than origins to me despite liking origins more.
@777Reigns This is how it's been at least for the last 3 years. 2017 had Destiny 2 (counts In a way) Ac Origins, CoD WW2, Shadow of War, that South Park game, Mario odyssey, the evil within 2, star wars battlefront 2, and Wolfenstein 2. 2018 had Ac Odyssey, DQ11, Spider-Man, CoD BO4, RDR2, Tomb Raider, and smash bros. 2019 had Death stranding, pokemon SwSH, Borderlands 3, gears 5, monster Hunter world icebourne, Link's Awakening remake, star wars Jedi fallen order, outer world's, the medevil remake, and Cod MW.
@710King minus the mechanics because those are baked into the game the textures and everything else you mentioned we're enhanced by the power of the 1X so it wasn't like playing the original vanilla version of the game. What yes is great but it is a little rough compared to today's standards of 4K
