Obsidian's The Outer Worlds took the RPG genre by storm last year when it became an instant hit on PlayStation 4, and it looks like that has translated into a big success at retail with more than two million copies shipped worldwide. This makes it the studio's most successful title since South Park: The Stick of Truth.
Take Two confirmed the welcome news as part of its latest earnings call, but what makes the number all the more impressive is that it was effectively given away on Xbox One. The Outer Worlds launched on Game Pass after Microsoft bought the developer, meaning that the amount of players who have actually engaged with its systems and mechanics is even higher. We're sure a sequel is in the works for Xbox Series X, although it's highly unlikely to come to PlayStation 5. At least we have some upcoming DLC to look forward to here at Push Square.
Are you one of those who bought The Outer Worlds? Does it deserve the sales success? Make the right choice in the comments below.

It was the reason I got Game Pass PC, which was great value. I liked it but it definitely felt more AA than AAA. I reckon a sequel could fix some of the wee issues with combat and have a bit more content.
Started it last night and instantly hooked! Glad it’s sold well for an original IP.
Makes you wonder how many it would have sold if it wasn't on Game Pass.
@AdamNovice I am sure Take-Two was satisfied with whatever financial compensation it was given when Microsoft worked out a deal to get the game released on Game Pass on day one.
It really doesn't matter for Obsidian since it's under Microsoft's safety net, now, where all the money that Microsoft makes funnels right into the developers paychecks.
Outer Worlds was one of my favorites last year-great game. There are not many Xbox exclusives that I actually want to play, but I am going to be bummed in a few years when the sequel is not available on PS5.
@AdamNovice errmmm...2 million ?
The closest any game has come to scratching the Mass Effect itch in years.
Let's see how the next game does if it doesn't release on ps4.
Good stuff. The game was great fun and had a crew of genuinely likeable characters.
I excitedly bought it before Xmas, but found it felt a bit linear compared to the (admittedly flawed) Fallout 4. I will go back to it though, I'm sure.
You left out the part where they also said it has made them a bit more open minded regarding sub based systems due to Xbox Gamepass.
Actually that isn't impressive at all, I would say its a flop considering its available on 3 platforms/huge install base but PlayStation exclusives get called flops when they sell 10 million on one platform.
Keep that same energy, where are those people at? Hiding like usual.
@Splat Not even close to scratching the Mass Effect itch.
You can attribute those sales in large part to releasing on the PS4 where there is no Gamepass. Don’t be surprised if the sequel tanks after it goes console exclusive.
@KingPev game pass wasnt included in the sales numbers....
@CmShepard what ps exclusive has sold 10 mil and is a flop?
@ellsworth004 that's what I and the article are saying : That the game STILL managed to sell 2 million copies regardless of being available on GamePass
@KingPev well yes we clearly know what the article is saying but @AdamNovice is wondering how many it would have sold had it not being on Gamepass, so just answering 2 million again doesn't make any sense.
I know I and a few of my friends played it on Gamepass instead of buying it and suspect many others would have done the same. Gamepass has certainly blurred the lines as to how a games success is measured
@CmShepard a brand new IP on a relatively small budget from a small studio, all with 2 out of 3 of those platforms it being available with a £1 subscription, with even many PS4 owners likely having that option too. I'd say overall that's a success
@carlos82 Not keeping that same energy though, I'd guarantee the majority of real sales come from ps4 owners, using gamepass as excuse I see as well.
@ellsworth004 Its not but to the certain few fanboys it is going by the install base of 100 million, so 10 mill on one platform is a fail.
Its all about keeping that same energy, by there standards this is a fail because it released on many platforms, larger install base and still only hit 2 million.
@CmShepard how is it an excuse? Gamepass will make significant differences to new games launching on it and to some extent sales won't matter anymore. Will you call Halo Infinite a failure if it only sells a few million but has over 10 million playing on Gamepass? Take Two themselves said it performed above expectations, so the publisher is happy with its performance
@carlos82 Sales don't matter any more? Talking like a true shill.
@CmShepard what do you think Xbox's business model is now based upon? It's not sales but subscription numbers as that is far more valuable, early last year they had nearly 10 million subscribers and it accounted for 30% of their revenue, those numbers are only going to increase
@CmShepard u keep saying this thing about keeping that same energy, i really dont know what ur even talking about...
