Yep, it's been seven whole years since Sony released its PlayStation Meeting 2013 trailer, coming out of nowhere to tease the PlayStation 4. The incredibly stylish video -- which we've embedded above -- sent shock waves across the internet. As alluded, the trailer really did catch everyone off guard. Sony had infamously said that it was more than happy to let Microsoft unveil its console first -- and then it went and dropped this announcement.
Taking a trip back in time, we penned this article on the 31st January 2013. An excited Sammy Barker wrote: "Now that’s how you drop a bomb. Sony has announced that it will reveal the future on 20th February at a PlayStation Meeting in New York City. The event – set to start at 18:00PM EST – will almost certainly play host to the PlayStation 4. Are you following this? It’s actually happening."
The situation was very similar to what we're dealing with right now. It had been six long years since the launch of the PlayStation 3, and Sony was keeping quiet on its next-gen plans. Rumours were rife and speculation was everywhere. That said, it does feel like there's more tension in the air this time around as we wait to hear more about the PS5. Although that could just be recency bias on our part. Seven years is a pretty long time, after all.
Of course, this is only relevant because the industry is once again on the cusp of ushering in a new console generation. Heck, some fans reckon Sony might try to replicate its PlayStation Meeting 2013 announcement today, revealing plans for its heavily rumoured PS5 reveal event. We're not convinced, but it would certainly make for a memorable moment.

I barely remember that. Nice find, Robert.
I remember it and can’t wait for all of the news and hype to get rolling.
Square Enix dropped a teaser for Final Fantasy VII Remake today and the internet lost it's mind. I guess January 31st is just a special day for PlayStation.
Remember the day well. Amazing moment.
@get2sammyb It was late for us as well wasn't it? I remember it being close to midnight UK time when the bomb dropped. Pure panic in the Push Square office.
@ShogunRok @get2sammyb
Why do I imagine you all looking like this on that day?
Edit: bah, couldn’t get the gif to work.
@OscarHTX I thought the same thing! They were hiding it in plain sight we just didn't know what we didn't know!
@ShogunRok Are you guys staying up late just in case?
@ShogunRok I honestly didn't think you'd been working here that long already, I would have guessed 5 or 6 years, but you had 3rd comment so I guess you have been.
Oddly enough I didn't comment on that article and don't remember the vid. I've never been a big fan of announcements of announcements though. The actual event I remember very well.
@OscarHTX - Doubtful, almost all of the world would miss it.
A few more hours and January is over and still no date for the PS5 show Saying that SONY doesn't have to follow the same time and format that they did with the PS4(I found the PS4 Pro show a bit boring really and that was a bit like the original PS4 Show) Oh well.
Definitely remember that day.i was in the computer chilling with excitement.it was far where i live at in new York.but it was fun watching it.man time fly by fast.word up son
I can't believe it's been that long! This generation still feels new to me...
Damn getting old fast.
@Arugula Ps5 is an alien conspiracy 😉
TBH.....I remember the E3 back then a whole lot more. Never saw a console crowd that relieved, and cheering even. Damn.
