Sony’s already said that it aims to expand upon its wildly successful first-party portfolio through “organic growth and acquisitions”, but a Wall Street Journal report has reiterated that the platform holder intends to increase its exclusive output. The publication claims that the Japanese giant will be focusing on blockbuster games, as it targets hardcore players out of the gate.
To be fair, while the organisation hasn’t been shouting about it from the rooftops, it’s quietly been expanding in-house developers like Guerrilla Games and Sony Bend. We also know that it’s recruited staff to a new studio, which is based in San Diego and is likely to be working on the next instalment of Uncharted. It all should result in a very compelling slate of software on the PlayStation 5.

Take note Microsoft...games sell consoles, not how powerful it is.
buy Square and lock down FINAL FANTASY and Tomb Raider before MS buy them because the way MS are going right now with buying developers you know they will eye them up sooner or later
ps5 syphon filter and parasite Eve.man 😳.make it happen Sony .word up son
buy insomniacs games.supermassive games.ready at Dawn.io interactive.remedy studio.word up son
@Nightcrawler71 right on playa👍.i can dig that.word ☝ up son
@FullbringIchigo nah it's never gonna happen.square is worth too much for Microsoft.and plus they don't want to tied down with Microsoft.word up son
I just love how Sony seems to run their studios. It certainly seems like they give the studios a lot of creative freedom as to what games they want to make. A developer creating a game they are enthusiastic about is always going to be better.
@playstation1995 Square ain't as well off as they used to be you know, yeah they are on the up now BUT it only takes them to be in a precarious situation at the right time and someone will pounce on them
if someone HAD to buy them then Nintendo or Sony would be fine as Square make their games with the Japanese market in mind but MS has pretty much failed in Japan every generation and if they got them they would "westernise" them and i don't want that
either that or run them into the ground like they did with Rare
@FullbringIchigo compare the companies MS has bought to square enix, can u see a difference?
@Amppari yep they have no Japanese studios and none of the ones they own are known for making JRPG's, most make action games and FPS games apart from Obsidian who are known for WRPG's
so yeah i could see them wanting a company like Square not only to get a big franchise like FF but to also plug a gap in their development studios
@FullbringIchigo I agree with you on Sony should buy them.but Microsoft it's not happening playa.word up son
@playstation1995 people also said that Final Fantasy games will never come to XBOX and look what happened there, in fact the XBOX ONE got an enhanced version of FFXII that the PS4 didn't AND the FFXIII Trilogy too
point is we can never take anything for granted in this medium, ANYTHING can happen
@FullbringIchigo Also they got Kingdom Hearts 3 for some reason. Een though no other game is on a Microsoft platform.
@waluigifan1 from what i understand that's because they lost the source code to KH1 and KH2 so they can't port them to the XBOX, they could upscale the game like they did for PS3 and PS4 but they can't make any changes which they would need to do in order to change all the PlayStation icons and things in the games
plus there is also all the Disney licensing to take into account too
Good, exclusive AAA games is the lifeblood of consoles 😃
@BearsEatBeets true. They give them fair time to make them too and it is noticable from their games' quality.
So Sony are planning to continue letting their studios make big budget games just like they have been doing for multiple generations of Playstation.
With MS having more potential to offer big first party games after adding new studio's (inc one they started from scratch), Sony may face more competition but if you are a fan of studio's like Naughty Dog, Guerilla Games, Sucker Punch etc, it doesn't matter how many 'big' games MS release, chances are you are still buying PS. At most, MS may tempt some people to own a device, whether that's a 'traditional' style console, PC or whatever xCloud may offer, alongside a PS5
I couldn't care less which 'console' has the 'best' or most exclusive games myself because I will make sure that I am in a position to play all the games I want. Believe it or not, that is exactly the same situation and approach I have had since returning back to consoles in the mid 90's.
I cannot see how this news is anything less than people expected. Did anyone think Sony were going to be downgrading their greatest assets, cut back on making games that have contested Game of the Year awards because 'new' console somehow stops them from doing so??
Bluepoint should have been snapped up a long time ago. Insomniac are definitely more at home under the Sony stable, and although have said that they want to remain an independent studio - recent sales (especially Spidey) may finally give them the push to be willing to be bought out. Supermassive would be a good acquisition. And then maybe a couple indie studios.
growth for the sake of the growth is the ideology of the cancer cell - so the quote goes. microsoft's strategy seems to me to be just buying studios for the sake buying studios, it doesn't seem as likely to bear as much fruit, imo. having said that, i'm not overly fussed on the rest of sony's PS4 output, except for the last of us - so they'd need to have something desireable for PS5 launch, or i'll skip day 1.
@Nightcrawler71 Hey don't give Microsoft any bad ideas. I'm happy not to have any reason to buy an Xbox.
