The Fallout 76 drama just never ends, does it? Bethesda's found itself in hot water once again as fans have expressed their disappointment with the quality of a duffel bag that was included in the game's $200 Power Armour Edition.
Said bag was advertised as a "canvas duffel bag", but the one that actually shipped with the Power Armour Edition is made of nylon, so it's a drop in expected quality to say the least. As far as we know, the backlash kicked off after an Imgur user posted photos of their bag and their subsequent exchange with Bethesda's customer support.
In a message back, Bethesda Gear Store Support wrote: "Due to unavailability of materials, we had to switch to a nylon carrying case in the Fallout 76: Power Armor Edition." Whoops.
The story quickly snowballed on social media and Bethesda was pretty much forced to issue a statement on the matter. On Twitter, the company said the following: "We understand and respect that there is disappointment with the bag in the Power Armor Edition. We are sorry. Please contact Bethesda Support to provide proof of your CE purchase. They will assist in granting your account 500 Atoms."
Atoms are Fallout 76's microtransaction currency, and 500 Atoms amounts to $5 or so. A decent way to apologise for the bag? That's debatable, since 500 Atoms barely gets you anything of note in Fallout 76's microtransaction store. Seriously, there are power armour paint jobs on sale for 1800 Atoms, roughly $18. Paint jobs. $18. Eighteen dollars. For a paint job.
Anyway, if you're unhappy with your bag, you can let Bethesda know by clicking this link and filling out the necessary information. Enjoy your Atoms!

These guys have fallen hard......
You know the expression "the least we could do"? Well sometimes it really is the very least they could do.
I guess Brexit ate all the canvas. Or something.
Sorry for the false advertising. Here's money for a hairstyle.
That’s rediculous. It’s a freaking scam at this point, it’s an insult of an offering. A pure insult. This game needs to fail. Bethesda needs to learn a lesson.
Should have just said canvas was the name of the nylon fabric pattern.
I've seen dumpster fires look better than this.
I assumed the game had microtransactions. 18 dollars? Absolutely disgusting.
Was there a fine print that said content subject to change without notice or something to at least save themselves?
That's the final nail in its coffin for me "oh you wanted blue power armour? Yeah that'll be £15" Are they taking the p**s? Releasing a full price game that's largely an asset flip of Fallout 4 and broken and then charging extortionate amounts of money for a paint job? Not to mention treating those who spent a lot of money on that power armour addition with so much contempt, Bethesda should be giving them at least 10 times as many atoms if not a 100 times to try and apologise, it's not as if it actually costs them anything to give them away.
Oh and before the microtransaction defence force appears they're optional and cosmetic and you can earn atoms in game blah blah blah
So the bag even has a bug. That's a bag bug.
could have been worse could have been a carrier bag
@FearIsUseful Hasta la bista, baby.
They should apologise by taking the game back off you.
I usually dont get on the hate train, but i live in west Virginia so alot of people in my area are very interested in the game. I try to tell them to not buy it, but they still do. 😔
Yikes, the whole thing just gets more embarrassing with each response from Bethesda. They're clearly not even trying anymore.
Deep sigh I am not surprised! Bethesda showing their true colours, what a shock.
I wonder how the rank-and-file who worked on this game feel about it? Comments tend to exclaim Bethesda / Zenimax as an evil organisation but I wonder how those on the ground feel about this type of shameless buggery?
Who the hell wants a Fallout 76 Duffel Bag? Given the state of the game they should offer every upgrade and enough.. um .. atoms to buy EVERYTHING in the game. . . . and that still wouldnt absolve them for releasing this monstrosity. The fact that any naive consumer forked out $200 dollars for this game is baffling! I know theyre a company that probably has healthy reserves but recently whole dev divisions have been forced to shut down after releasing far better games than this!
Bethesda has been taking a piss for way too long. The quality of their games doesn't deserve all the praise and adulation they get. They release buggy games and never bother fixing any of it. Fallout 76 is what Bethesda fans needed to open their eyes, so I guess the game being bad is a good thing.
I don't understand this kind of companies that just for a quick buck release bad games and even products damaging their image in the future and losing trust from their costumers, why not focus more on quality so people can keep buying your games and merchandise in the future, I guess I still need a lot to learn from business
Surely this C.A.N.V.A.S any worse for Bethesda. What a case study for how to alienate yor biggest fans and on how NOT to release a game.
@GKO900 EA are finding that out right now with the lackluster sales of Battlefield after last years battlefront fiasco. Id like to think Bethesda's next game will suffer a similar fate
@andreoni79 truly horrifying 😂
I only read the first few words: Bethesda Apologises for Fallout 76
500 Atoms! OMG ahahahah
Bethesda is worse than EA I see...
It may be better then nothing but giving out micro transaction money to fix a problem is just insulting to me.
Now they are just going to use that poison as make up gifts as well???
Surely heads will roll at Bethesda for their hubris thinking, that they can get away with such flagrant attempts at ripping off their consumers.
Surely any customer goodwill will be evaporated after the release of this game?
Will anyone trust Bethesda again after this sh1tshow?
That is truly shocking isn't it. Not the fact the bag is nylon and not canvas, more the fact that the response was so "yeah, whatever". I mean, I hope the person asked for a full refund when they offered him/her $5 compensation.
Sadly, Bethesda won't suffer over any of this Fallout debacle. Gamers all over will lap up the next pile of rubbish put out in a years time because that's what gamers do.
I like how people are finally waking up to what a terrible company Bethesda is. EA and Activision get criticised for things Bethesda do much worse (unfinished games, game breaking bugs) and let's not forget this is the company that gave us horse armour for about a tenner or so.
@andreoni79 🤮 what did they do to poor Tweety Bird?
This has got to be the biggest mess of the year. Its got to be up there for biggest mess of the generation as well.
Incredible story.
Does any other industry get away with as much lying, cheating, scamming and delivering products unfit for purpose as the games industry.
"product is not as described" = full refund, at least in UK law. win/win, as you'd be getting rid of the game too.
@bindiana BMOTY
@Octane haha but is it GMOAT
Best one they said was "the bag we shown was an early prototype but was too expensive to make"...We don't plan to do anything about it.
By giving microtransaction money.
Ahhh, Bethesda.
I feel bad for the fallout 76 folks but geez I really hope this doesn't impact TESVI in any way.
500 atoms? hahahahahaha...
just make an atomic bomb explode in the game, and give back people's money
@Ryu_Niiyama if they don't change their engine, is gonna happen again, in a small scale, but it will happen
Lol people who bought that game are being insulted....
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi $18 for a single shade of paint. WOW! $5 for a hair style.
What's also hilarious is that with the 500 theoretical dollars refund, you still cant even afford to buy the virtual version of the canvas bag, as that's 700 atoms.
This is absolute gold!
Still being advertised as canvas bag on the game UK website.
So in the past year Bethesda advocated for SP games before revealing a MP always online game to one of its biggest franchises.
As well as a mobile Elder Scrolls game.
Pressured Sony about cross play then back tracked on the idea once Sony called their bluff.
Then released Fallout 76 (say no more)
And now cheapened out on a collector's edition while offering microtransactions as recompense.
Remind me again why people are fans of this company again?
@AdamNovice very simple.
most of their fans are PC gamers,and if you utter the words PC master race you are a good guy in their eyes. it's all it takes.
but yeah glad i'm not the only one who cought out on their hippocritical SP stance. it was all PR talk without any real meaning behind it. most likely done to get some more votes for most popular dev or something.
i bet TE6 will also have MP shoved in.
Woah, Bethesda’s bugginess got to new heights it seems!
Not only are their games buggy messes, they even managed to ship buggy physical items 😂😂😂
Bethesda is dropping the ball haaaaaard! How much things can you screw up for one game, I hope they will learn from all the backlash they're getting, otherwise I think it's safe to say the future for Fallout and Elder Scrolls is looking very bleak at this point.
Can we all agree to never buy anything from Bethesda again?
I'm glad the Bethesda angst is growing. I always felt alone in my dislike of Skyrim back in the day. When I recently got my PSVR and it included Skyrim, I went back. Once I got the controls handled, I found myself following the NPC down a hall. He keeps calling to me to hurry, but I am stuck in the floor. Sir, help me... I am stuck halfway out of the floor. I can not follow you. [restart] Now I follow the NPC again and find myself stuck in a barrel. I can look down with my PSVR and see my legs, stuck in a barrel. I can not move. The NPC keeps calling for me to hurry, but alas, my legs have failed me again. Where once I was stuck in the floor, now I am standing in a barrel unable to simply step out of the barrel. What is this black magic that holds me tight? I quit and moved on the Doom and Moss.
I am glad Fallout 76 took the fall and the fallout from it will hopefully 86 these anticonsumer practices in the future games people have been waiting for.
Wheres that crossplay at Bethesda?
