Imagine being an independent retailer, banking on this year’s biggest game making up a chunk of your end of year earnings, only to be told that you won’t receive stock until November. That’s the dilemma staring a bunch of small US shop owners in the face, as a supply issue means they won’t get copies of Red Dead Redemption 2 until next month – a fair few days after the title’s 26th October release date.
Kotaku reports that many small stores have outfitted their shops with imagery of Rockstar’s latest, and have been taking pre-orders for years – but owners expect all but their most loyal customers to end up downloading the title from the PlayStation Store or visiting a larger chain like GameStop to get their fix.
It’s unclear why this is happening – especially for such a high profile game. Some believe that Rockstar simply wants to keep the product out of the hands of Mum and Pop shops in order to prevent leaks, but it’s also possible that the multi-disc rumours that have been doing the rounds have caused a production headache – it would be unprecedented for this generation after all.
Either way, this really sucks for smaller shops – especially at a time when selling physical copies of games is getting tougher anyway.

Is it strange that now that I know there may be shortages of supply that suddenly want to preorder?
I was planning to wait but now I’m not so sure.
Are they creating a counterfeit feeling of demand and desperation?
@Th3solution I’m sure there’s going to be more than enough copies in the big shops. And if not, the PS Store will never run out.
Amazon has on their listing of the game that they won't have it ready for release date delivery. This could change early/mid next week.
If I have to wait until the week after to play I'm fine with it. Had to wait this long, what's a few more days?
@get2sammyb you think RDR 2 gonna sold out quickly in Gamestop, Walmart, Best Buy, Target, Amazon ? what name of store of Mom and Pop ? i never heard of Mom and Pop shop before
This isn't THAT unheard of. I remember Fire Emblem: Awakening also had difficulty meeting the demands at launch, which forced me to download the digital version if I wanted to play on day 1.
How likely is it of larger chains like Best Buy and Gamestop running out? If this news persists, I may be tempted to simply go digital on this game and get a jumpstart on preloading it. I really wanna play it day 1, waiting till Nov 2nd isn't optimal.

This was meant to be funny, right? Please tell me this was meant to be funny or you just made me feel really old!
Not surprised tbh
This what happens in retail. The big chains always get the products first if stocks are limited because they simply can order more than the small retailers. The system always look after the big guys. This happens in a lot of sectors not just video games.
I can't justify the price of digital (£59.99)? Hell no!
Luckily took advantage of the very offer. £33!
Well gonna play the game for even longer since Days Gone is delayed now.
Thats the bright side of it I guess
@get2sammyb So, it sounds like this is mainly a US thing, right? I have my copy pre ordered at a local video game store, but now I'm asking myself whether I should stick with it or order it at some mega retailer.
Tesco better have this in stock next Friday or it's going off in aisle 7.
@LN78 it's just a case of adding rd2 and a little thing to take it over £50. Select click and collect. Use the code LXJK9 and it'll credit the £20. Making the game £33.
@LN78 no probs. Hate being forced to pay more than £40.
If your local mom and pop game shop has eshop cards, buy those to pay for the digital copy of the game. If they don't still buy it digitally and maybe get a new controller from them instead. Either way do not, I repeat, do not fold and buy it physically from a big box store. It will do nothing but further drive this issue in the future.
blockbuster video will definetly have red dead redemption.wow what a difference.😂😱😇.haha.word up son
There is a small part of me that believes there is a possibility that the industry is directing this to push digital.
@ApostateMage I'm considering getting down to my local Tesco at midnight Thursday, just in case. Means I can install overnight too.
@Gremio108 I used to do that at my local Asda. It was quite surprising to see the size of the queues at midnight for some games.
