Wow, we never thought we’d see the day. SEGA has followed up on its promise of a “huge surprise” by announcing that Shenmue I & II will be coming to the PlayStation 4 later this year. Considering we’d written off the possibility of this ever happening, that’s a pretty gigantic surprise indeed. This lifelong ‘Mue fan is still reeling from the news.
The two classic Dreamcast titles will be replicated in their entirety, depicting Ryo’s revenge mission with all of the QTE-imbued brilliance of the originals. There’ll be new resolution options, as well as a choice of classic and modern control schemes, an updated user interface, and the option to enjoy the titles with either English or Japanese dialogue.
There’s no word on a date yet beyond 2018, but this is barmy news. Truly barmy. If you’d told us five years ago that we’d be able to play a full Shenmue trilogy on the PS4, we’d have not-so subtly laughed in your face.

I'm going to cry. Un-be-f**king-lievable!
PC and Xbox in the West too.
Basically means the games aren't lost to time anymore on the Dreamcast/Xbox, which is absolutely fantastic, as innovative gems like this shouldn't be lost.
The other announcements were.....odd. Sakura Wars, probably to PS4, but its literally just a name, and a mini Mega Drive.
This is when we get Sammy a tissue.
Let's just hope Shenmue sells this time eh? It'd be nice to see it elevate beyond cult status.
One of the greatest days of humankind.
I'm happy for everyone on this planet
@get2sammyb did they announce release date for those games yet ? it should be out before 3 come out in late 2018 like December
@PS4fan No date, just 2018. Honestly I wouldn't mind if 3 was pushed to 2019 and we got these this year. More time in the oven wouldn't hurt.
Welp. Looks like I'll finally get to play this.
@PS4fan For 1 and 2? They just said 2018. They'll definitely be out before Shenmue 3, though, as that's never coming out.
... I joke. I think 3 will be next year.
@YummyHappyPills i thought they said 3 coming out in 4th quarter of 2018 like November or December
@get2sammyb i heard they said 3 will be out this year in 4th quarter of 2018
@PS4fan They SAID 3 was coming this year.
But realistically if this can buy them more polishing time, why shouldn't they take it? Make the best game you can and honestly, imagine the burnout from playing 1 and 2 then 3 right after.
I'm with @get2sammyb on this, 3 should be pushed to next year. Let everyone catch up
@YummyHappyPills yeah we will see what happen but i bet they will announce sad news is they want delay Shenmue 3 to early 2019 for polishing time. i never played 1 and 2 before because i didn't buy Sega Dreamcast to play those games
@PS4fan 2 was on the Xbox man.
As I said, good this remasters are coming, the other 2 are hard as hell to find.
i wish Bluepoint devs do fully remastered on Shenmue 1 and 2 like they did great job with Shadow of the Colossus remake that look beautiful
@YummyHappyPills lol i didn't buy original xbox while i was playing games on ps1 and ps2.
@YummyHappyPills Shenmue II was on Dreamcast in Europe. NA only got Shenmue II on Xbox
@Tasuki Oh we got it on the Dreamcast?
Shows how little they pushed 2 really. What an odd crossover.
Then again that would have been the dead end of the DC.
I have the Dreamcast version of Shenmue II, it only has Japanese voices. The Xbox one added the English voices in.
@YummyHappyPills I believe that's why NA got it on Xbox. By the time it came here the DC was dead and MS snacted it up as an Xbox exclusive. The biggest annoyences of having the Shenmue series in NA I need two consoles to play the full series.
@get2sammyb Was there something on the DC versions of Shenmue II that if you had a save file from Shenmue 1 it would unlock something?
@Tasuki Yeah, it would carry some of your items and money across I believe. But then your backpack gets stolen at the very beginning so it's kinda pointless. Nice touch, though.
@get2sammyb Ok yeah we didn't get that in NA for obvious reasons 😂
Yay! Never played any of those so I'm happy to join
I never played, now it's the perfect time I guess. Anyone I know that played Shenmue really loves the series.
As someone who's never played a Shenmue game before, is it still recommended? Even after all this time?
Shenmue 1 & 2 are the only DC games I still keep around. Even though I don’t have the console anymore. Happy that they’re carrying the whole soon-to-be-trilogy (fingers crossed for more to come) to the PS4.
Didn't appeal to me back in the day, doesn't appeal to me now. I don't really get the love for it.
I'll be taking the week off work to replay this, I already played both titles to completion maybe 20+ times on Dreamcast. The original had a bunch of online stuff too although I doubt they'll add much other than possibly score boards.
Wonder if the voices have been rerecorded? Im guessing this comes out this summer, because once fall hits to many AAA releases. Im guessing June-July. Hoping for a steelbook,if not i will buy ps4 digital. Hopefully cost no more than 69,99
Also ive finished the original on dreamcast many times,a masterpiece. Part 2,while its a great game, the difficulty ramps up,got stuck halfway through on multiple playthroughs, could never finish it.
@Tasuki @get2sammyb capsule toys and cash, always best to spend all your cash as soon as you arrive at the toy machines for trading later. An awkward photo standing apart from Nazomi, great.
@Amusei I think people who have never touched the series and don’t really understand how important it was may struggle with it. It’s a pretty weird franchise by modern standards.
I think you just have to keep in mind that the games are almost two decades old and you may find enjoyment in them.
YES!! Finally I can stop moaning here about it!
@hulkie The voices in the trailer are exactly the same, complete with all that lovely compression.
They won’t have re-recorded (and nor should they have).
Ah-ha! I had a hunch last year that we would get a Shenmue Collection. I remember commenting on an E3 article about it.
I finally get to play a Shenmue game for the first time in my life. I've seen videos of gameplay before, but never played it.
YES! I am crying - I thought we'd never see the day http://i0.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/001/214/620/aaa.jpg
@get2sammyb "and not should they have"
Have you been up all night again, it's 5AM there isn't it?
Congrats. Best part about this news, all of the "I see" memes will be unstoppable now. bwa ha ha
I've always wanted to try these games but never had a Dreamcast so never got the chance, i remember one of my friends always raving about the first game at the time, then of course its become such a huge cult favourite over time, i will definitely give these remasters a go now, not sure if i'll enjoy them but i have to at least see what all the fuss has been about these past few decades haha
Oh. My.
GAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
Nice. Never played any of these. Very curious to see what all the fuss is about.
The problem —> more games in an already crowded 2018?!?! For the love of Pete, I need more time!
Looks I can play these for the first time now. Wow
Haven't played this series before. @4:40 is footage from Shenmue II, everything else prior to that is from the first Shenmue?
Hmm, looks like I'll have to give these a chance. I briefly played one of them years ago and wasn't feeling it, but i'm willing to give them another shot.
Next, please bring back panzer dragoon series sega, remaster all the game 4k & 60 fps for the pro
What kind of game are these exactly, ive never played them, but always wondered what genre they were.
Yes! Exactly what I wanted. I was afraid I'd eventually have to break down and buy copies for the Xbox (not even sure if ours still works...)
This is awesome! I've been wanting to try the series for the longest time, but I didn't know if I wanted to buy a Dreamcast just for them. I probably would have done it eventually, but now I'm just glad there's a more convenient way of experiencing them.
@ellsworth004 They are pretty much open world RPGS.
@Ralizah Only the second one was on Xbox.
Ok now we need a remake like the Resident Evil series 0 and 1 with Dino Crisis 1 and 2. Still salty that they released Dino Crisis 3 exclusive on the Xbox and killed the Franchise..... 😱 😢
Ok, im interested. Never played becore5, but people have talked so much about them, i really should give them a try. But Sega, and this applies to Valkyria Chronicles 4 as well, please, please, please do your research if you want them to be a success. Look at the release schedules and choose a sensible time of year. Do not release the same week as something like red dead redemption 2 or spiderman. Yakuza 6 is already set to suffer from being released so closely to god of war.
O and shenmue 3 is 100% not coming out till 2019 at the earliest i would think
@Flaming_Kaiser Yes!!!! I want dino crisis so much! Still annoyed the psone classic is only available in NA region and not Europe
Sega finally digging into their amazing back catalogue other than for releasing Genesis classic collections, 2 amazing games here that I own for the Dreamcast. I was going to replay them soon but I think I'll wait now for the collection instead.
Sega now that you've remembered you can do more than just release iffy Sonic games. Can we have all of the Panzer Dragoon games back and maybe some new ones, with Saga still being one of the very best rpg's I've played. Whilst your at it let's have some modern sequels to Shining Force, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, Crazy Taxi, even give us a FPS version of House of The Dead now that light guns don't work.
Can't wait for these Shenmue games and number 3 to arrive
Nice. Time to see what all the fuss is about and see if they still hold up to the Yakuza games of today.
People who've not played these are really going to stuggle with it, the only mechanic that will hold out is the fighting.
I still have my Dreamcast and both games, but it'll be nice to not have to play at 50hz!!
Never played these, so I'll pick this up.
I have a feeling that I'll hate it, with not having the nostalgia factor involved, but this feels like one of those games that should be played.
I am very happy to finally see this announced and will be buy the psychical release
To those who wish to discover this saga in order to be ready for Shenmue III, an important note : do not judge these games by today standarts. Yeah, seems pretty obvious, I know, but I can see coming all the "but that's crap ! So THAT 's what all the fuzz was about ? Really ?"
The gameplay is pretty wierd (I can't wait to play again those titles with a regular dual stick control sheme !), but Shenmue is all about the ambiance, the world it describe and the story. The fact that an amazing vengeance story manages to takes place in a regular environnment, where you have to find a job and a place to crash, etc...
The first one was a masterpiece, but the second one was litterally genius. Proper genius.
@KingdomHeartsFan Why?
Didn't like em back then, maybe I will now though!
Great for the fans but I never was a fan of the original.I found it too slow and boring.
Personally I was hoping for a Sonic Spinball remake
I think the most important thing for modern gamers to be prepared for is the glacial pace. I mean, this is a game with a cutscene for every time you walk up and down a step beside your front door. It's painfully slow at some points.
If you're prepared to sit back and just let it happen at whatever speed it wants, you'll soon be hooked, but I can see a lot of newcomers with 1% trophies for years to come.
@KingdomHeartsFan It did that but, I saw on gamersutra that they would be getting a World wide psychical release, so I change it.
Excellent. I've not played them before, but I have been wanting to see what's so great about this series.
I'm disappointed. I don't like Shenmue it's not about quality I just don't like it and don't care about it, it's jst a matter of taste. At least by the end of may we will have the Megadrive collection and this is something I'm really looking forward to.
And just while we're begging for rereleases of our favourite Sega games, come on, give us Skies of Arcadia
Game informer says only 29.99,wow!! Ign says preorders should go live soon. Sounds like we might get this as soon as this summer !!!
I will buy 3 copies of Valkyria 4 and 2 of these and gift them to my gaming buddies.
OH HELL YES!
by the way any news on how it's going to be released, Physical and Digital or Digital only?
@kyleforrester87 oh i would LOVE that
@PS_Nation word up son.you should buy it.its almost like yakuza.
@LaNooch1978 Yakuza is different IMO. No it’s not what Bluepoint’s working on.
At last I can buy these two. As for long time fans, I'm really chuffed for them cos their waited such a long time for this.
@FullbringIchigo There’s a physical release!
@get2sammyb
never played them before but it looks interesting.
i don't mind the decade old graphics either,i feel that it's part of the charm.
things like this make me happy that we get so many remasters, and since the shenmue games are getting remastered (something that very few even thought would ever happen) it makes me hope for other remasters that most likely will never happen. looking at you elder scrolls oblivion.
Over the moon with these SEGA announcements. 🐮🌝
@sinalefa
How long until you start crying about something else?
@get2sammyb Oh Sammy....duh, obviously Bluepoint are working on a complete remaster of the 8 Silent Hill games (except Book Of Memories, cause...well, you know) completely rebuilt from the ground up!! Yep, Konami lurve their IPs sooo much...they are chucking million$ of gazillion$ of squillion$ at Bluepoint, and every single game will also have full PSVR support, playable in 1st person!!! 🤪🤪🤪
....and 3, 2, 1, I’m back in the room 🤣
Im stil convinced bluepoint are working on mass effect trilogy, but I'm sure all will be revealed at e3
Any chance of a remaster like shadow of colossus?! BUT not so different like Secret of Mana? I think I spent more time collecting miniatures in Shenmue than enything else! Ah dreamcast we had good times back then (and sore thumbs cos of silly gamepad!)
