Just how well will God of War sell? The franchise has always been one of Sony's best when it comes to shifting units, but with the drastic change in direction, questions were being asked early on about whether core fans would be won over.
Of course, now that we're sitting here on launch day and the game's reviewed unbelievably well, we think it's safe to say that Kratos' latest adventure will be a hit. It also helps that Sony seems to have poured a huge amount of resources into the marketing side of things.
But don't just take our word for it. NPD analyst Mat Piscatella is confident in God of War's ability to make a splash, stating on Twitter "my confidence is high that God of War will be the biggest exclusive debut on the PS4". Going up against the likes of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End and Horizon: Zero Dawn won't be easy, but if anyone can do it, it's Kratos.
Piscatella continues: "Only question I have left is how high is the sky for a primarily story driven, non service game. Haven't seen a game like this rated this highly in years, so this will set the benchmark."
How well do you think God of War will do? Make some bold predictions in the comments section below.

Well from the praise it's getting it certainly deserves it!!
Come on update...just let me play!!!!!
It will be amazing if it can sells better than uncharted 4. I'm 4.5 hour in to the game and I still can't get enough of the combat, there's so many different variation that can happen, it's that good
@Eternallover21 There's only one right answer: today.
Critical praise doesn’t always equate to commercial success, and vice versa. But I think the sales records are about to fall in this case.
"Only question I have left is how high is the sky for a primarily story driven, non service game. Haven't seen a game like this rated this highly in years, so this will set the benchmark."
Or, you know, at least 13 months for a primarily story driven non-service game.
And I wouldn't worry about it making money. Haven't played it yet - still waiting on UPS - but I feel there's either separate DLC or a download game coming this holiday for Atrues. Then next year will be either the "Complete" or GOTY Edition". Then a year later on PS5 we'll have the remastered 4k version. I'm not worried about Santa Monica going bankrupt over this one.
Before the people who can't take a joke show up...
Matt Piscaletta is Michael Pachter in disguise.
I just can't see GOW outselling UC4. UC4 was the perfect storm.
@Fight_Teza_Fight I dunno, man. A few weeks ago I would have agreed with you, but seeing how things have played out these past few days, it seems possible to me.
Obviously we'll need digital numbers as well.
No surprise here.of course it is.the king kratos got a kingdom heart.it will be the best selling game this year.word up son
If ut wasn't for this game maybe I would have never bought a PS4. I bought mine a few days ago mostly for this game and I am absolutely pleased. This game is exceptional. I've always loved God of war 2 and I alredy love this ome as well
“Hurr durr it’ll sell as much as Grand Theft Auto V”
To be fair to Mat Piscatella, so we don't get more Zelda or any Mario comments, he doesn't include Nintendo in this context as for data purposes N software is an outlier to the data they gather and plays by seperate rules to PS & XBOX.
@get2sammyb true, but this amazon nonsense wont help of course! Even if it is now on sale.
It still seems amazing that only recently we were having conversations about how sony were contemplating ending the series, and yet now they are on the brink of breaking records all over again. Bravo Sony for seeing the project through and massive congratulations to Sony Santa Monica for sticking to your guns.
Well deserved too judging by the large amount of good reception the game has had. When it comes to exclusives Sony more often than not know how to make a quality experience, they are are right up there with Nintendo.
And to think, this is just the tip of the iceberg of juicy exclusives to come out this year. We're still yet to have detroit, spider-man and (possibly) dreams. It's a good time to be a gamer. Oh, and I'm loving this new direction they've taken GoW. I've always loved the series and this game has elevated my love for it. Exceptional work santa monica.
I think if they had made another God of War like the 'others' it wouldn't have attracted a LOT of attention from those who were not hardcore GoW fans. Even if ALL of those didn't buy into the formula of the new game, the game will attract a much larger audience thanks to the changes.
The amount of people that said they were not fans of God of War that are buying this is going to far exceed those God of War fans that may not buy. As such this will be the biggest selling GoW game and may even match/beat H:ZD
hmm.. would take some doing to beat UC4, imo. it sold around 2.2m at launch and is over 10m total by now. HZ:D was 1.8m for launch, and 7.6m overall. GoW III sold around 6m, if it exceeded that, it would be very impressive. the whole "there are no loot boxes or microtransactions in the game" PR is getting plenty of good will with a lot of gamers.. and the 95% metacritic rating doesn't hurt either. i still think UC4 and H:ZD will top it in the long run, but it still be a huge commercial success, and i wouldn't be surprised if sony bundles it hard come black friday to really give a strong second wind in the holidays.
the game has plenty of stuff to do and keep you occupied if you wanted to be completist - i'm 6+ hours in and i haven't left the second area (aflheim) yet. even for a multiplayer/'service game', 50 hours is still quite an investment, so i don't think GoW being a single player only game will have that much detriment on its sales.
The biggest untill ether death stranding or the last of us 2 comes out
