Everyone's going SEGA gaga today! Hot on the heels of the Phantasy Star-inspired Cosmic Star Heroine, cult Master System classic Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap is now confirmed to be getting a remake. This one was also ported to the PC Engine in the early nineties, but is being re-created for modern "consoles" by a French team with previous experience working at Q-Games and Media Molecule.
And it looks absolutely unbelievable. The plot appears to be the same as the original, which continued the story of Wonder Boy in Monster Land. "Turned into a half-human, half-lizard monstrosity by the Meka-Dragon, a lonesome adventurer is facing the challenge of a lifetime," the blurb reads. "In search of a cure, our mutated anti-hero will explore the many traps of Monster Land – and defeat many stuff-throwing, curse-wielding dragons."
The original certainly dipped its boots in the fledgling Metroidvania genre, and it sounds like that will remain the case here. Expect a sprawling inter-connected world, and six playable "forms" that you'll be able to toggle between. The original Westone team has been recruited to contribute to development, with series creator Ryuichi Nishizawa very much on board. Promising stuff, then, but don't just take our word for it – check out the trailer.

Loved this back in the day on the Game Gear.

Absolutely stunning
This is one of the games that really got me into gaming, I can't begin to imagine how much time I spent playing this, so it will be a definite purchase
I own the original and have beaten it but I thought it was merely okay.
That said, this remake has my full attention. It looks incredible!
The last remake I expected but a good choice and it looks like they are doing a good job of it.
I still have the cart and a Master System. Even after all these years I couldn't bear to be without it. So good.
I loved this game back in my Game Gear!
One of the very best games on the Master System. Certainly looking forward to it!
@Grawlog AMEN.
Liked this game but loved the original Wonderboy. Wonder if they have any plans for bring that back out. Will probably pick this up but if the original came back out it would blow my freaking mind lol
So great to see a lot of the community have played the original. One of my favourite games on a Sega console period. Awesome.
Hmm, I've played Wonder Boy III, but I reckon the series has more of a following in Europe.......From what I played, I found it very charming......although I'm more of a fan of linear platformers (nothing against this series at all).
Well this was very unexpected, but what a surprise! Brilliant news, will pick this up for sure! The updated art still has bags of personality, looks great!
I love this series so much! The original is a very treasured item of my collection: https://www.flickr.com/photos/videogamescollection/4310800103/in/album-72157623176038665/
