With Assassin's Creed Unity stalking Paris later this year only on next-gen consoles, it's up to Assassin's Creed Rogue to fill in on the PlayStation 3. Other than some sparse gameplay details, we haven't had a good look at the last-gen stab-'em-up yet, but all that's changed thanks to an eight minute walkthrough from publisher Ubisoft.
It's another seafaring adventure, but this time around, you play as Shay, who's loyal to the Templar order. As such, you'll be going toe to toe with the Assassins and the groups that support them, as you sail about the New World. It's an interesting premise, and we reckon that seeing the ongoing war between the two forces from a different point of view will keep things feeling relatively fresh, but we can't quite say the same for the gameplay that's on show here. While the setting is certainly a lot different to the sunny shores of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, it's hard to ignore all of the rather obvious asset recycling. Shay appears to use the exact same animations as the grizzled Edward Kenway in combat, and although there are a few new toys to play with, we can't help but feel that this release looks like a huge step back from Unity's apparent fluidity.
Have you considered doubling down on both of this year's games? Or perhaps you'll just wait for the seemingly inevitable re-release of Rogue on PlayStation 4? Whatever your plans, take a look at the video and let us know if you're as cynical as us in the comments section below.

Hope that I will be done with Unity by the time Rogue is out
Honestly I was initially ticked that AC Rogue is only coming out on last gen, because I would've preferred to have it on PS4 like Black Flag last year.
But the more I think about it, the more and more it feels like a spinoff. I'll likely end up skipping the game.
Finally we have an opportunity to play as a templar, they could've REALLY changed the gameplay around, but instead it will look and feel identical to playing an assassin. The whole "trained as an assassin and becomes a templar" thing is the least creative way to let us play as a templar. They should have their own unique tools, gear, animations, skills, and 'brotherhood' that functions and feels different than the assassins. They shouldn't move the same, they aren't the same, the templar targets we've hunted in past AC games were more like politicians, behind the scenes guys controlling the puppets, not like assassins.
Also, the fact that this is coming out after Unity is going to make it feel like a huge step backward for current gen console owners.
Visually, even just stepping back to X360 from Black Flag on PS4 will make it feel old, let alone going back to the old gameplay mechanics when Unity is introducing so many new tweaks and improvements (looking at the combat and climbing)
If they released Rogue today I might've picked it up as I've long been finished with Black Flag and I'm eager to play a new AC game while I wait for Unity. But mid Nov? Maybe I'll pick it up next summer on the cheap if anything as I wait for 2015's inevitable AC on next gen....
It doesn't look that different but then again black flag was awesome
I am still annoyed that they can pull crap like this just because Sony and Microsoft were too cheap to add BC.
I absolutely loved Black Flag, but I played it on PS4. The worry for me is that if I played this one PS3, it'd feel like a pretty substantial step back, especially since Unity seems so fluid and refined. I'm also a bit worried that it'll feel too familiar — I'm really not a fan of the way Shay has many of the exact same animations as Kenway. Bit of a disappointment, but I still hope it's good.
I actually get the feeling this won't get a next-gen re-release, because Ubisoft will be wanting to make a quick buck off it and for get about it ASAP because it's actually not what they want people to see AC as going forward (that is, a shameless moneygrab)
^What world do you live in? Assassin's Creed has been a shameless cashgrab since Brotherhood.
That said, I approve of more pirate-y action. Considering how bland Unity looks, this gives me more reason to stay with the PS3 a while longer.
@eaglebob345 Sony I can understand no BC (because of the Cell processor), but the X1 should've been BC for sure.
@kupo I would let Sony slide IF PS Now wasn't such an awful and greedy "solution" for BC. If they really wanted to include BC in some way, streaming PS3 games on PS Now would be free.
