Resident Evil is set to return early next year on the PlayStation 4, as part of a re-mastered edition of the GameCube’s well regarded REmake. Rumoured earlier in the week, the title has now been officially confirmed by Capcom, and will launch early next year on both the PlayStation 3 and Sony’s next-gen machine. Unsurprisingly, the latter will run at full 1080p.
The inaugural entry in the uber-popular survival horror series first launched in 1996, but was completely remade in 2002. It’s the latter version that you’ll be playing, complete with upgraded textures and audio. You’ll be able to toggle between widescreen or classic picture ratios, as well as opt for a revised control scheme. Don’t worry tank fans, as the original inputs will be available, too.
If you want to purchase the title physically, there’ll be a retail release for the PS3 version in Japan. That’s due out later this year, and will be available in several different guises, with more details presumably set to follow over the coming months. We’ve included a few screenshots from that edition in the space below.
For those totally out of the loop, this spooky – but also unintentionally silly – affair sees you assume the role of either Jill Valentine or Chris Redfield, two S.T.A.R.S. operatives in search of the missing Bravo team. However, when the military trained twosome take refuge in an abandoned mansion, a maniacal plot unravels.
Are you looking forward to re-experiencing this classic on Sony’s current batch of consoles? Prove that you’re the master of unlocking in the comments section below.

Right.... so a remake of a remake. It's getting silly now.
Cue posts of hate and love.
That title Sammy it's made me hungry I think! Edit: Right on the money so far.
Well, I'm looking forward to playing this again.
Still amazed this...
turned into this.......
That roid rage.
Played GC and Wii version...can't wait to play it in 1080p
@Jazzer94 PUNCH THAT ROCK.
@voodoo341 if the game was good enough to remaster once for a new generation, why not again two generations later? You dont think that a new generation of Resident Evil fans want to play the original story without emulation or using a retro console?
If the only thing that came out this generation was a slew of remasters from earlier generations, I would be more than happy. There is a backlog of thousands upon thousands of great games already made that are waiting to be played by a new generation, or enjoyed again (or for the first time) by an old. Keep the remasters coming Sony!
What is the difference between a new great game, or a remaster of a great game you never played? There is none. I doubt you (generic you) have played more than a couple percent of all the great games since 85. There is room for a lot of enjoyment here.
@get2sammyb Chris had a good teacher.
Great news. So long ago I don't even recall if I played the original. Certain I didn't play the remake. Resident Evil is a game that is always worth multiple play throughs so remake remake is fine by me, just avoid a half bake.
@thedevilsjester because I didn't pay over £400 for a next generation console to play last generation games. This is becoming too common on the PS4 now and is beyond a joke. If you're happy with that good for you but try and avoid the name calling if you don't agree.
I think I'll give it a shot. But I see why others annoyed, because while I support a few ports its not what I spend $400 on a PS4 for. Then again this is Capcom.
I think the reason they're remastering the first RE yet again is the fact that they can't think of anything good for Resident Evil anymore, so they ride on the success that was really the first one that started the whole series. I want to see capcom make a proper evoled Resident Evil game and I just don't think it's going to happen.
Gonna get this when I get the PS4
@voodoo341 Where is the name calling?
Being remasters they are far, far, from last generations games. These are not dated Madden games where there is no point in playing last years version, they are games that still play great and have great stories today, many that are part of a larger series/universe that the new generation of gamers has not had the chance to experience, all they need is a touch of paint, which the remastering provides. (why would I buy RE7 if I have not played RE 1-6?, answer, I would not)
For the past 3-4 years Sony has been all about HD remasters, and if their interviews about remastering games for this generation because many PS4 gamers did not own a PS3 last generation are any indication, they will not be slowing this remaster train down. This is what the PS4 is now, and will be in the foreseeable future.
@voodoo341 These aren't taking away from new games, so I don't see what the problem is personally. Maybe you should have bought the PS4 when it has games that you want?
@voodoo341 oh dear, I don't think owning a ps4 is ever going to make you happy. I love the first 3 re games so yes I will be getting this
I'm so geting this, would have prefered a physical release though
Not interested as It's just a HD remaster of the Gamecube remake anyway, Which I already have on the Wii.
Hopefully the price is right. $29.99 is a price I'd pay..... For nastalgias sake. Orignal was my first mind f@ck on the original psone! Good times.
I have been playing this recently look forward to the upgrade, guess it's almost out of the question to release this physical on ps4 in Europe and America i wonder how long until we see Resident evil zero HD on ps and xbox
Comparing the comments here vs. the comments at Nintendo Life is pretty hilarious. It's almost like Capcom wants to make money by releasing this game on consoles that people actually own. The PS4 surpassed the Wii U in total sales within a few months, plus there's the small fact that over 80 million PS3s are out there. Funny how that math works out.
SHAMELESS PLUG ALERT.
I'm a pretty big fan of the original PS1 title, to the point where throughout my life my dreams often take place in the mansion. A while back I released an album of instrumentals inspired by all the spooky stuff I grew up with, and of course I made a nod to RE, titled "I Hope This Isn't Chris's Blood". I'd love to know what you guys think!

@get2sammyb you're entirely wrong, they are taking away from new AAA games. Unless of course you actually believe there's an abundance of AAA games on the PS4. Which there clearly isn't! It's just easy money for publishers who sell ports at premium prices. You didn't see any rehash games being advertised for the PS4 at launch. Now the PS4 is the home of the double dip and platforming indie that belongs on a mobile.
@thedevilsjester they are totally last generation games no matter what frame rate they run in! Rehashes are ok if the console already has a strong portfolio of original, quality software. The PS4 is miles away from that. Sony will fail if they offer nothing but rehashes as you suggest.
@voodoo341 honestly, I don't even know why you own a PS4. Or any other Sony product for that matter. All you ever seem to do is trawl these forums looking for your next opportunity to have a little whinge about how dissatisfied you are by it all. Do us all a favour and sell your much lamented ps4, so you can take yourself off to some other forum where we don't have to listen to your incessant, endless complaints. Cheers buddy.
@Diddy_kong I wouldn't buy it on wii u anyway as you can get the wii version for a much cheaper price. But I see your point.
@SteveButler2210 I think You're being harsh in saying that, I think voodoo is just a little underwhelmed by all of these re-hashes, And he does have a point, They're coming too thick n fast.
Wow this came out the year I was born ? I remember playing it as a little kid it was so scary to me then. October 31st would be a perfect release date for this but there's already a lot coming in October.
@voodoo341 Uh it's also coming to 360, PS3, Xbone, and PC for your information. So don't blame it on Sony and PS4.
Its funny how when a new visual tech comes to movies (e.g. HD, 3D, 4K) the first thing I want them to do is remake the classics so I can watch their brilliance all over again in stunning 3D (4k etc). Yet when it comes to games, people really have an issue with remaking classics.
It really should be said for the people that dont know - These remakes are 95% of the time not made by the creative developers in the industry, the developers who develop the great new games that we are all longing for. Even in the case of TLoU remaster, yes it was ND however it would have been the ground level programers and developers making it. Not the high level creatives potentially working on the next great thing.
If you are still worried that these games are stopping new original titles, I think you might need to realise that without these "easy cash" games no new AAA games could be made. The industry is rough at the moment.
@eLarkos yes quite correct. But sony should try MAKING new modern day classics for its new modern day machine. Gaming remakes also tend to cost you 40 quid a piece.
@eLarkos capcom yes remake yes, shinji mikami was resi evil capcom just published it. He left along time ago. To work on a NEW game The Evil within. I know the beggining the middle an the end of RE1 ,no amount of resoultion upgrade. Will make me pay 40 quid.
A RE2 remake would be amazing but I guess I'll get this too.
Now how about a MGS Twin Snakes HD remaster, Konami?
The fixed camera and limited view of the early resi games, wont translate well in a remake IMO, its age old-mechanics would have to be changed to much for a remake, Thus losing the spirit of the original..,
@get2sammyb
REmake is awesome, probably my second favorite game in the series after RE 2, so I'm definitely happy to see this get a re-release. Unfortunately Capcom has gone stupid these days and I'm sure the price will be ridiculous.
@Diddy_kong
RE has always had good success on Nintendo platforms and this game was originally on the GC. I can understand the frustration, there's no reason Capcom shouldn't be bringing this to Wii U.
Played both the original and gamecube re-make!..and i will be playing it on my ps4. I love these remakes. Good games are re-playable, even more so in 1080p. I wish bioware would remaster the Mass Effect series, but i will not hold my breath!.
I got my fix of this when I bought my Wii back in 2008 and I hunted down the GCN original. People who have only played RE4 onward are in for a rude awakening trying to get used to the controls.
I don't mind this not hitting Wii U as you can technically play the Wii version, but I hate Capcom for not giving U owners SFIII HD.
Looking forward to this never played it
@Davros79 Yeah i understand where @voodoo341 is comeing from too but does he have to b*tch about it all the time? I mean come on give it a rast all ready man
I am absolutely psyched for this. The RE remake on GC was awesome. One of the scariest games ever made. My PS3 just got happy.
@Davros79 I get where you're both coming from there, up to a point. But like @eLarkos says, without devoting some smaller teams to projects like this, studios would struggle financially to make the big hitters. Making a AAA game these days is damn expensive compared to how it used to be, and they can't just churn them out 24/7 like a lot of people seem to expect these days.
And my gripe with voodoo is frankly not based solely on his posts on this thread. To be perfectly honest, I'm just stick and tired of him taking every thread on this website and using it as an excuse to b!tch and moan about his hated for Sony. Honestly, if you don't believe me view his profile and check his comment history. It's literally all he ever posts. It's just getting really old now, and I'm sure I can't be the only person getting tired of it.
@SteveButler2210
Unfortunately, people have different opinions and not every one of them is going to be 100% positive about Sony all the time. It's very easy to ignore somebody's comments if you don't like what they're posting. I don't always agree with @voodoo341, but he's entitled to his opinion just like anybody else here and he does bring up some valid points.
@Gamer83 yeah, that's fair enough and I appreciate that people's views will differ. But to my mind this place should be a forum for people who love gaming to discuss the latest developments etc. Not just as an outlet to vent seemingly unreasonable levels of bitterness by relentlessly spouting negativity on every other new story that appears. Occasionally yes he does have a valid point. But it's the fact that the rage posting is so relentless, and the fact that he has previously clearly stated he is anti-Sony, that makes it seem for the most part that all he really cares about isn't to have a reasoned discussion on a subject, but rather to get as much complaining in about Sony as he can, because of whatever chip it is he's got on his shoulder.
I do get that Sony make the odd wrong call or 2, but that's the same as most other similar companies. I just think that if somebody really has that much of a problem with a company, they should take it up with them directly (he could try the comments section of the weekly EU updates - that's where most of the mindless flaming seems to take place), or just stop using the company's products if they feel that strongly.
@Gamer83 in fact (and sorry for the double post here), it's pretty well summed up the way @AeroZeppelin puts it above - I do occasionally get where @Voodoo341 is coming from, but does he really need to go on b*tching about it. All. The. Time.
@SteveButler2210 just to correct you.... this isn't a forum. If you want the forum you can navigate your way there with the links at the top of the page. This is a comment section specifically related to the article posted. Also please stop trying to classify me, you don't know me and know nothing about me. If you don't like my comments don't read it. I posted my comments without resorting to petty name calling and accusations made by some. If you don't like feel free to ignore it.
@voodoo341 the inference there was that these sections should act as a forum for discussion of the article, not just an outlet for one man to complain endlessly about Sony.
I don't know where you got "name calling" from. I haven't once called you anything. I made reference to b*tching, whining and moaning, but that isn't calling you anything, simply describing your actions.
And honestly, you should be the last person to be coming at me with the "if you don't like it, ignore it" mantra. If your general comments are anything to go by, you clearly don't approve of Sony or any of their products, and I'm certain I have previously seen you actively criticising the news articles on this website and their authors, because you didn't agree with them.
So, I put it back to you - if YOU don't like it, YOU ignore it...
@voodoo341 What eLarkos said Its funny how when a new visual tech comes to movies (e.g. HD, 3D, 4K) the first thing I want them to do is remake the classics so I can watch their brilliance all over again in stunning 3D (4k etc). @voodoo341 And also what ThreadShadow siad
It's my belief that people don't understand that the second gaming crash is happening. It just looks so different from the first one.
Traditional "triple A" games are taking a back seat because they are too expensive. They're part of the cause of this second crash. Triple A games have hit a critical mass and can't support themselves any longer. The money crunch is cutting all the fluff and this crash is taking everything back to basics. The bubble has burst. "Indie" gaming is the future because gaming has hit a new era. An era where a prominent "second" wave of talent powered by ease of distribution, and relative ease of "low" level funding, has emerged. A group of people similar to the talent that appeared in the 1970s and 80s who started the ball rolling in the first place.
Companies know they've hit this new era too. Bankruptcies, mergers, and layoffs, everywhere. They know they've hit the wall and can't support themselves on traditional triple As anymore. That's why they are scrambling for this new talent. These are the designers and talents of the future industry. These will be leading new companies, dev teams etc. of their time. Creatively, they are at the same place as when it all began.
Even though not everything they do looks 8-bit, I sometimes call this new era "8Bit2". They are starting new again at the beginning, and risks and creativity are starting to flourish again, like they did at the start.
All that being said, Chasm caught my interest. Looks like what a side-scrolling FFVI would look like.
The other side of the coin is the mobile industry. This is contributing to the second crash much in the same way Atari etc. did in the first crash. A marketplace flooded with thousands of low quality, free-to-pay, game "apps", all available on a myriad of devices. The consumers gave up then, and I can see them giving up again.
@SteveButler2210 twisted what ever way you want but this isn't a forum and that's a fact. I don't need your permission to comment despite you resorting to name calling. Don't panic I'm sure Sony don't really need you jumping to their defense. Bye !
@voodoo341 Last one and also what rjejr siad I think it's getting easier to see the bigger economic picture:
Casual games maker King Digital (Candy Crush) is going public:
http://www.cnbc.com/id/101519854
Casual japanese games company Gung Ho (Puzzle and Dragons) is making $:
http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2014/01/27/gungho-gaming/
Meanwhile companies like THQ are going under.
PS3 and PS4 owners can hold up their noses at casual games, but they are taking their toll on the games industry. The ROI of multimillion dollar games is becoming too much of a risk. Look at the smaller games Squenix puts out, and Level 5, my current favorite game company w/ the likes of Dark Cloud, White Knight Chronicles, Rogue Galaxy and Ni No Kuni under it's belt is focusing on upcoming touchscreen friendly RPG Wonderflick:
http://www.polygon.com/2013/11/21/5127278/level-5-boss-akihiro-hino-on-how-wonder-flick-links-up-consoles-with
There are some games like COD and Madden that can still sell for $60, but not too may others. Too much competition. Better to spend $100,000 each making 10 attempts at the next Bejeweled or Angry Birds than $10 mil making Tomb Raider.
I don't think the big game AAA model is completely going away, but there will be less companies making them and less AAA games as a result. And the big companies that put out a big game every year or 2 or 3 will need to put out smaller indie like budget games as well. It's why EA bought Popcap.
Rovio and Ronimo will be swallowed up eventually, but other indie companies will take their place.
Only Majong will stand alone, their game is crack like no other.
@voodoo341 Nobody's called you anything but let me be the first one to actually call you a name YOU are nothing more then a troll therefore there is zero point in talking to you since all you wanna do is troll the comment section if that's all you wanna do fine go ahead be my guess i will ignore you from now on
@voodoo341 look pal, I'm not twisting it, as you say, by any means. By definition, the word "forum" refers to "a meeting or medium where ideas and views on a particular issue can be exchanged". Correct me if I'm wrong, but that is exactly what these comments sections are. Apologies for using words you don't fully understand, I'll try to avoid doing so in future.
Again, I would point out that I have never once called you any names, simply described your actions.
And as for needing my permission to post, I never once suggested anything of the sort. I merely took your own perfectly sound advice and put the same point to you.
It's a simple case of pot, kettle, black mate. If you don't like what you're reading, ignore it - as you rightly suggested I could have done - without the need to complain about it 24/7, and then we would not be having this conversation in the first place.
@voodoo341 whatever the weather, I'm done with this for now. Either you can take your own advice, or persist in your hypocrisy. I'm more than happy to ignore you in future, provided you can perhaps follow your own advice for more than 5 seconds. Just felt that it was about time somebody called you out on this.
@AeroZeppelin well said. Well said indeed.
@SteveButler2210 I'll make it easy for you https://www.pushsquare.com/forums/
copy that link and it'll take you to the forum. I'm sure you'll find someone there to tell you Sony are fantastic. Best of luck!
@voodoo341 Once again your missing the point
Guys, can we keep it cool in here, please! Thanks!
I never did play the original Resident Evil game, hopefully I'll enjoy RE1 HD.
@AeroZeppelin I'm not sure what's funnier - the way he chooses to ignore the points that make him look like an arse, or the fact that the points he does respond to he misses so spectacularly that he just looks foolish.
And apologies @get2sammyb, didn't mean to cause any issue, just trying to weed out the trolls!
@get2sammyb I for one am excided for this! i never played but 3 or 4 minutes of the game on Gamecube and loved it.... unfortuanettly i didnt own it. it was my friends. is it coming out for pS3 as well? i heard rumors... and id Buy it on Disc so im Importing it! lol i imported BioHazard 5 lol
