We have one of those Magic Eight Balls here at Push Square towers, and every time that we ask it whether 2014 is going to be a year dominated by ports, it tells us that “it’s a certainty”. Alright, so that’s just one of several random responses that the distinctly unmagical ornament is capable of displaying, but we reckon that it’s right on the money.
A quick glance at the release schedule reveals a dry spell for the industry as a whole. While the beginning of 2013 ushered in blockbusters such as DmC: Devil May Cry, Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, and BioShock Infinite, this year is looking comparatively quiet. And while the major publishers start work on their next batch of PlayStation 4 titles, we reckon that it’s re-releases that are going to fill the void.
We’re already seeing this with Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, which is essentially a Game of the Year version of last year’s hit with some spruced up character models. And now Naughty Dog has hinted that The Last of Us could be the next title to receive the upgrade treatment. “We will see what the future brings,” community manager Eric Monacelli wrote on the PlayStation Blog when asked about the possibility of a port.
With the game proving such a gigantic success, and the PS4 winning over former Xbox 360 owners, it makes sense to convert the escapade to the new console. The developer has already admitted that it’s sticking with its PlayStation 3 engine for its next-gen titles, so it probably wouldn’t take too much to get the post-apocalyptic adventure up and running on Sony’s new hardware. Plus, it would really flesh out the upcoming software calendar, and add another exclusive to the system’s roster.
Would you be willing to splash out on an updated port of the popular survival horror title, though? Are there any other current generation games that you’d like to see make the jump to the Japanese giant’s latest console? Upgrade your opinion in the comments section below.

If I ever get a PS4, I'd definitely settle for an updated version of this game!
I personally think Sony shouldn't waste time & resources to port TLOU when it could be used to make games for PS4, plus I think it would send out signals that Sony are struggling to deliver exclusives in the first year for the system. Besides isn't this what Gaikai was for in the first place, a cloud gaming service to play PS3, PS2 & PS1 games on?
@adf86 I can see the point, but I don't really see it as a waste of resources. Let's say Naughty Dog hires 10 people to do this conversion — they probably wouldn't have a use for those employees if the port didn't exist. I personally think it makes sense to port as much stuff over as possible.
would love to see a port. I'm one of those 360 converts who never owned a ps3 so i'd love to play TLOU on my PS4, as long as it doesn't take away Naughty Dog's attention from Uncharted PS4. Maybe outsource the port or have a very small team just do the port?
As far as the 'dry spell' the only dry-ish months I really see are January and the very beginning of February. But Tomb Raider is coming out at the end of Jan, February we are seeing two major launches in DriveClub and Thief. In March we have MGSV Ground Zeroes and InFamous: Second Son. After that, in my opinion (at least to my knowledge) is when the dry spell starts. Whats coming out in the spring & summer? Next major release to my knowledge is Destiny in September.
But I'm sure we'll have plenty of indie games to play all the while.
Give me games I loved on PS3 on PS4 and I'll likely play them again. Simple as that.
would love it on PS4,wouldnt mind great games being port over to ps4 with better graphics
@get2sammyb I get what you say mate & while an upgraded TLOU would be cool, I don't want Sony to make the Gaikai service redundant early doors because they decided to port the PS3's best games over beforehand. I mean it makes Gaikai an easier sell if you say "Right TLOU, Uncharted, GOW 3 & Heavy rain will be playable the day the service goes live".
I've switched from Xbox360 to PS4, so I'd love to see this game ported. I also wish people would stop banging on about Gaikai as if it's a magic bullet - I live in a large city centre and despite being connected to a fibre exchange, the street cabinets are all copper and my Internet runs at 1.4mbps and 0.2mbps upload - Gaikai is NO use with speeds like this, which are sadly a reality for hundreds of thousands of properties across the UK.
I would buy this in a heartbeat
Good point about the 360 converts. Gaikai is not going to let us play every ps1,2 and 3 game for the same reason all gamecube games are not on wii u VC... Money. They want to remake all our favourites and charge full price again. Nintendo is notorious for it and ppl keep buying.
@eLarkos
Nintendo is notorious for it? I play on Nintendo consoles too, and um, the only remake I've seen on Wii U is Zelda Windwaker HD. That's it. And as for the 3DS, there are two remakes from it's first year to help fill the dry spell: Zelda Ocarina of Time 3D and Starfox64 3D. 3 games since 2011 across two separate platforms isn't exactly alot.
With that said, there's nothing wrong with remaking a classic every now and then, or to fill a gap in a release schedule after a launch. I bought all three of those Nintendo remakes, and I'm buying Borderlands 2 on Vita, Final Fantasy X/X-2 on Vita, and Tomb Raider on PS4. It's a great option to fill gaps between releases, or to bring a dated classic into the modern age.
@JaxonH you clearly didnt think too hard about that before posting.
It was a bit unfair to include Nintendo in my post as they are great for backwards compatibility, so my argument doesn't really apply too much to them.
Also, I love remakes of games I like. Often they are better so im happy to pay. Would I buy them if the original was available for a fraction of the cost? Depends.
@Bliquid I can't disagree with anything you've said (except buying a PS3, I'll come on to that part later), but the problem of slow broadband still remains. Too many folk still have <2mbps connections which simply won't cope with Gaikai whenever it's ready. For some, a ported game will always be a preferred option for this reason.
As for the PS3, I have been very tempted just to play TLOU, but after spending in the region of £650 for the PS4, 4 games and the PX4 headset, I can't justify another £100-130 for the PS3 & game. I'm sure there are LOTS of former X360 players like myself making the switch to PS4, and many will have forked out similar amounts to do so - buying another console just isn't on the cards for a lot of folk.
I'd happily pay full price again for this experience. I've played through twice and it' gets better every time so he'll yeah bring it on.
Oh and I'd like gta v as well please. That's all for now.
I'm working on my TLOU plat right now on my third playthrough on survivor and it is sooo much fun. I will buy the ps4 port without a doubt!
My PSN ID is flyboyv, hit me up.
@adf86 Honestly I think for those who didn't purchase the ps3 version. an updated version would be a real treat!
With that said I would wait for a super polished port or slightly upgraded version
There's a reason why there's no BC with current gen consoles, as the old porting last gen to next gen games makes its presence felt. That said, if the ports offer updated visuals and some extras, then I suspect many gamers won't mind paying and playing the game all over again, especially if the source is of a high standard.
What really needs to happen is a better pricing model to encourage sales.
Ugh, developers focus on NEW games please. A sequel to TLoU or Tomb Raider, GTA VI,? That's fine, but enough with these cross-gen re-releases.
Yea this would be a waste of time & resources. If you want to play The Last Of Us, then get a PS3. If you didn't and owned a 360, thus missing out, well that's your own fault for buying into Microsoft's crap. Besides, isn't this what Gaikai is for? Yes. Yes, it is.
Since I don't own TLOU yet I would love to have a PS4 port. A graphically intensive game like TLOU should be a top candidate for porting since it would be able to take advantage of the new hardware. I don't think they should port every game all though that would be nice. Gaikai will not make the games look any better and there could be bandwidth issues for some people who want to use Gaikai. We also don't know how long it's going to take to roll out Gaikai and iron out all of the potential bugs. In the meantime it would be great to have PS4 ports of some of the great games from the PS3 library.
I bought this digitally via the PSN on my PS3 at launch (along with the Season Pass). The only way I'd buy a PS4 version of TLOU is if Naughty Dog/Sony offers a PS3 to PS4 upgrade for retail AND digital versions. I wouldn't spend more than $20-$25 TOPS to upgrade though (it really SHOULD be just $9.99 like the other PS4 launch games that we were able to upgrade to)...
