It's been a bit on and off for a while, but it was finally revealed at Capcom's Captivate 09 media conference that upcoming Dead Rising 2 will indeed have multiplayer, although details are scarce
Interestingly though, Capcom's Inafune did explain why the game has multiplayer:

"We're at a point in game history that you need to have some form of multiplayer component in a game"</blockquote>
Read: "Because we have to". Just look at what the XBOX generation have done.
