NBA 2K21 Best Builds for MyPlayer and MyCareer Guide

What are the best NBA 2K21 builds for MyPlayer and MyCareer? A big part of the NBA 2K21 experience is building your own player for use in The Long Shadow campaign, MyCareer mode, and crucially the The City and the Neighborhood. While your personal player build will depend largely on how you want to play the game, if you’re looking for assistance then we’ve put together this guide with a bunch of the best NBA 2K21 builds to help you get started in a number of different positions.

All of these builds will enable you to earn multiple Hall of Fame badges in key areas, while also emphasising important attributes that will make you better in the position you want to play. Remember, you can (and should) deviate from the guidelines outlined below depending on how you want to play, but these NBA 2K21 builds will give you a good baseline to work from. NBA 2K21: PS5 vs PS4 MyPlayer Builder

NBA 2K21 Best Builds for MyPlayer and MyCareer

NBA 2K21 introduces some pretty massive changes to the NBA 2K21 MyPlayer Builder on the PS5, meaning that this page will now include two sets of Best Builds for MyPlayer and MyCareer, for the PS5 and PS4 versions of the game. The next-gen version of the game generally streamlines the MyPlayer Builder, without losing any of its depth. This means you'll no longer need to pick a Skill Breakdown or Physical Profile pie chart. Badges have also been altered, with the addition of some new ones and the removal of some older ones.

NBA 2K21: Best Builds for MyPlayer and MyCareer

On this page you'll find the best NBA 2K21 builds for MyPlayer and MyCareer across the five primary positions on the basketball court: Center, Power Forward, Small Forward, Shooting Guard, and Point Guard. If you're new to basketball and aren't familiar with the roles and responsibilities of each position, or you're just looking for a refresher course ahead of the release of the new game, then we've summarised the positions below:

  • The Center is typically the tallest and strongest player on the team, and is usually positioned beneath the basket. This player's strength, height, and athleticism is utilised to collect offensive rebounds and also create space for other attackers. Defensively, they're also leveraged for defensive rebounds and to block shots.
  • The Power Forward is typically similar to the Center in terms of physical attributes, but will often have a little more speed and shooting prowess. This player is generally quite versatile, and thus can be effective in the paint and around the perimeter on both sides of the court.
  • The Small Forward is typically shorter than the Power Forward, and is generally a jack-of-all-trades. This player often excels at ball handling and passing, but is also usually one of the better shooters in the team.
  • The Shooting Guard is typically the fastest player on the team. This player is responsible for driving the ball down the court, creating offensive plays, and shooting from distance.
  • The Point Guard is typically the shortest player on the team, and is responsible for directing offensive plays by assisting teammates and finishing moves.
NBA 2K21 Best Builds Guide Player Creation

When creating your player build for MyPlayer and MyCareer, you'll need to decide upon a look and appearance of your player. It's possible to download the MyNBA2K21 app for your smartphone and scan your face, but you don't have to do this if you don't want to. As you'd expect, the appearance of your player doesn't make any difference to the way in which you'll perform, but you will be spending a lot of time with your character, so be sure to spend a little time to settle upon a look that you like.

One thing to keep in mind when creating your NBA 2K21 build is that you'll need to pay attention to which position you select for your player. You should also take a few moments to consider which dominant hand you want your player to use, as this will alter how they approach things like blocks, dunks, and rebounds. It doesn't make a gigantic difference in the grand scheme of things, but it's something worth keeping in mind all the same.

Skill Breakdown

Before you can start devising your player, you need to pick a Skill Breakdown pie chart, which will influence both your starting stats and maximum stats. The pie charts are divided into three different ratios: Finishing (Blue), Shooting (Green), Playmaking (Yellow), and Defense/Rebound (Red). These are relatively self-explanatory, but we'll describe them below:

  • Finishing influences how effective you are at offense when in the paint. Attributes like Close Shot, Driving Dunk, and Standing Dunk are the focus here.
  • Shooting influences how effective you are at offense outside of the paint, such as when you're attempting Three-Point Shots or Free Throws.
  • Playmaking relates to your ability to move the ball well and pass to your teammates effectively. High ratings to Pass Accuracy and Ball Handle will ensure you're able to dribble precisely and bring others into the game.
  • Defense / Rebounding relates to your ability to box out opponents in Interior Defense and Perimeter Defense. It also influences how effective you are at Steals, and your ability to execute Offensive Rebounds and Defensive Rebounds.

You'll need to select the Skill Breakdown pie chart the best gives you the platform to create the NBA 2K21 build that you want. We've highlighted which ones to pick as part of our guide for each position below. It's worth noting that 2K Sports made changes to NBA 2K21's MyPlayer Builder for the PS5, so the Skill Breakdown aspect only applies to the PS4 game.

Physical Profile

Physical Profile works similarly to Skill Breakdown, as you're once again required to select a pie chart influencing the following physical attributes: Agility (Purple), Strength (Blue), Vertical (Pink). Once again, these are relatively self-explanatory, but we've included some additional explanation below:

  • Agility pertains to your player's running Speed and also the time it takes them to reach top speed, Acceleration.
  • Strength relates to your player's ability to effectively box out opponents and also jostle for position in tight areas.
  • Vertical is perhaps the least obvious, but it essentially refers to the speed at which you're able to reach the apex of your jump. As such, if you're creating a player who relies on rebounding both offensively and defensively, then you'll want to have a respectable Vertical rating. This can also affect dunks as well.

As with the Skill Breakdown, you'll need to pick a Physical Profile pie chart that accentuates the type of player you're planning to create. We've outlined which profile to select for the example builds below. We should add that 2K Sports made changes to NBA 2K21's MyPlayer Builder for the PS5, so the Physical Profile aspect only applies to the PS4 game.

Body Shape

NBA 2K21 Best Builds Guide Body Shape

Body Shape has no impact on the performance of your player build, but you'll want to pick a type that you personally feel most comfortable with. There are four profiles to pick from: Burly, Built, Slight, and Compact. Pick the look that you prefer.

Height

NBA 2K21 Best Builds Guide Height

Unlike the abovementioned Body Shape, your Height profile does make a difference to your performance. Depending on the type of player you're creating, then you'll be restricted to certain height parameters. However, in most cases taller players will not be as fast as shorter players but will be stronger and better at rebounding.

Weight

NBA 2K21 Best Builds Guide Weight

Similarly to Height, your player's Weight will have an impact on their abilities. A lighter player will be able to move with better Speed and Acceleration, and will also have better Vertical attributes. However, if you want to emphasise Strength then you'll want to work with a larger, heavier build.

Wingspan

NBA 2K21 Best Builds Guide Wingspan

Wingspan relates to the width of your player's arms when extended. You'll obviously want a wider wingspan if you plan to do a lot of rebounding and dunking, although this will come at the expense of Strength and your Shooting abilities.

Takeover

NBA 2K21 Best Builds Guide Takeover

The Takeover is one of the key mechanics in NBA 2K21's MyCareer mode, as it gives your player a temporary buff when they're playing well. You'll spot the meter in the top right corner of the screen, and as you score points, collect rebounds, and assist your teammates, this will increase. You can trigger it using the R3 button once it's full, but keep in mind that your Takeover meter will decline if you turn over the ball, make bad shots, or leave your defensive assignments. Nevertheless, picking the right Takeover for your build can transform an already excellent player into an elite one, so make sure you select the Takeover that best complements your build and style of play. In the PS5 version of the game, you can pick a Primary and Secondary Takeover.

Badges

NBA 2K21 Best Builds Guide Badges

Badges are buffs which can take your MyCareer player to the next level. These are passive upgrades and there are dozens of them available, divided across four primary categories: Finishing, Shooting, Playmaking, and Def / Reb. Depending upon how you set your player's potential, you'll be able to unlock several Badges to buff your player. It'll depend on what type of player you're trying to build as to what you should select; a Center that focuses on rebounding will want to upgrade their Rebound Chaser Badge to Hall of Fame, for example, where a Shooting Guard may focus more on their Playmaking abilities in order to ensure they're able to move around the course quickly and accurately. As with the Takeover, you'll want to select the Badges that best complement your build, and upgrade them appropriately.

  • Base: Jump Shot 96 or Jump Shot 98
  • Release 1: Kobe Bryant
  • Release 2: Rudy Gay
  • Release Speed: 75%
  • Animation Blending: Kobe Bryant 70% / Rudy Gay 30

Experiment with these settings until you find a Jump Shot that works for you, but keep in mind that increasing the Release Speed currently minimises the window required to hit a Green Shot, so while you want to make it fast enough to quickly pop your shots off, you should be cautious of going all the way with this because it's going to require more precision if you do. Experiment with these settings until you find a Jump Shot that works for you.
