Publisher: Ubisoft / Developer: Ubisoft
Release Date: 26th Jun 2018 (USA) / 29th Jun 2018 (UK/EU)
Available On: PS+ Extra

The Crew 2 has a lot going for it. Its main party trick is the ability to swap between planes, boats, and cars at basically any point, but its open world is an achievement in itself — a scaled-down version of the United States. You can freely roam this enormous environment, gradually unlocking new vehicles and engaging in all sorts of online multiplayer modes and events. The best bit is that it's still receiving updates today, years after launch.

Publisher: Codemasters / Developer: Codemasters
Release Date: 5th Apr 2016 (USA) / 5th Apr 2016 (UK/EU)

No longer listed on the PS Store, DiRT Rally was a revolutionary rally title. Off-road racers were stagnating for a good while, but Codemasters brought back the excitement with this straight-faced simulation take on the motorsport. The result is a brutally challenging but seriously thrilling racing experience as you blitz through muddy trails and narrow streets on the knife's edge of disaster. It paved the way for various others, including an excellent sequel, and the VR version is as intense as you'd expect.

Release Date: 26th Feb 2019 (USA) / 26th Feb 2019 (UK/EU)

Building on the brilliant hardcore experience introduced in the first DiRT Rally, the sequel is another tough but excellent sim racer from Codemasters. The handling is unforgiving at first, but it's wonderfully gratifying to master, and the sensation of driving at insane speeds through treacherous rally routes is thrilling. The inclusion of Rallycross adds some variety to the mix, and a few small refinements to the gameplay make this an essential purchase for rally fans.

Release Date: 16th Mar 2018 (USA) / 16th Mar 2018 (UK/EU)

EA's first foray into remasters sees the triumphant return of one of the arcade racing kings. Burnout Paradise was ahead of its time on PS3 in many ways, and this remaster proves that; its updated visuals look good, the open world racing is as slick and speedy as ever, and the innovative online features are still better than most. With all the DLC included and an addictive array of events and collectibles, this 10-year-old racer will keep you strapped to your seat for hours on end.

6. DriveClub (PS4)

DriveClub (PS4)
DriveClub (PS4)
Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment / Developer: Evolution Studios
Release Date: 7th Oct 2014 (USA) / 10th Oct 2014 (UK/EU)

The story of DriveClub is fascinating. It took some time, but it eventually grew from a botched launch title into a cracking racing game stuffed with content. The presentation remains impressive years later, and the “simcade” handling is a great balance that provides enough of a challenge but doesn’t alienate more casual petrolheads. Throw in the Bikes expansion, the brilliant social features, VR support, and one of the most generous season passes ever, and you've got one stonking racer. Unfortunately, it's now been delisted from the PS Store, and its online servers have been shut down. A sad end to a rollercoaster story — but a great game nonetheless.
