I have no idea if this game is underrated or not because I've never known anyone beside myself that ever played it. I'm talking about the superb PS3 game, El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron.

It's a third person action platformer where you play as the scribe Enoch who's been sent down to earth to capture seven fallen angels and prevent the great flood. Here's the link to the Wikipedia page for anyone interested in knowing more about it. If you own a PS3 and can track down a copy I can't recommend it enough. Incredible game!

@colonelkilgore Oooooo I liked Spectre I used to walk around reciting Blofeld's "author of all your pain" bit.

What I don't like is what S.P.E.C.T.R.E stands for. It's ridiculous haha.

@TheIdleCritic so I was so looking forward to Spectre after Skyfall… the fact that they were at last able to use Blofeld again, the fact that they cast Christoph Waltz in the role, Sam Mendes was back directing… I was psyched. Then I watched it and fell asleep. Tried to watch it again and fell asleep in roughly the same part (about 45 mins to an hour in)… tried one more time and fell asleep again.

I just felt that it had a poor hook, no rhythm… and Craig seemed to be dialling it in imho and therefore no pathos. Maybe I’ll give it another go before I watch his latest film in the role and with little to no expectations maybe I’ll enjoy it more 🤞

**** DLC!

@colonelkilgore I was looking forward to seeing Waltz as Blofeld too and it was such a disappointment...

@Voltan yeah it’s strange that with all the constituent parts seeming so strong that it ended up that way… still I’m glad @TheIdleCritic and presumably quite a few others did enjoy it. As I said in a previous post… maybe I’ll enjoy it a bit more if I try it with no expectations.

**** DLC!

Horizon Chase Turbo is a great shout.

PixelJunk Shooter Ultimate is brilliant game, I've always preferred playing on the Vita but looks nice on the big screen.

Bastion, Limbo and Severed are a few more I can think of.

Also I agree with a few people here, The Order: 1886 was a great game, such a shame it was on the short side. Love to see some sort of a sequel.

@Shigurui That’s a real deep cut but yeah, I remember enjoying it at the time. The combat was decent but it was definitely the visuals that elevated it.

Plumbing’s just Lego innit. Water Lego.

The Order is definitely underrated. I think it was reviewed harshly by people expecting something this game never tried to be. As a cinematic rollercoaster with a nice setting it was executed nicely.

Child of Light - Charming little game that made me realise I could tolerate turn based combat.

Life is more fun when you help people succeed, instead of wishing them to fail.

My list.

  • Amplitude: So, this is a rhythm game and the concept is really cool. You're surfing over different instruments, and basically pressing buttons for each of their notes. Now what I really like is that depending on the instruments you surf on, the song will sound different. And there's a tactical element to it too, for you to find out what route to take. High replayability.
And yes, the soundtrack may seem a bit lame, but the songs work very well within the game. They aren't masterpieces, but what this soundtrack lacks in budget, it makes up for it with love. It's all very much a passion project from Harmonix (Guitar Hero fame), and the fact that there's a song by Insomniac Studios about themselves is a testament to that. So endearing!
  • Catherine: This game is not without faults, but there certainly is nothing wrong with its addictive puzzle action gameplay. The story has some really nice cutscenes too. There's weird endings, weird persons, a great mystery and I loved it!

(Disclaimer: If you're struggling with your own gender identity at the moment, skip it for now. There's a few bits where the game just doesn't handle the topic well.)

  • Psychonauts: I know, this game still has a cult following and there's a sequel coming this year with a mighty budget. But still this game is underrated because it is never mentioned when people talk about mascot platformers. Critics still act like Mario was the only one getting it right in the 21st century, but Psychonauts is compelling!
  • Virginia: Walking simulators always have these... eternal voice overs. I love the genre, but sometimes these games can feel like someone is telling you a story while you walk through some unrelated location. Virginia fixed this problem, by just cutting out all dialogue, meaning this is a walking sim that tells it's complete story by showing it to you and letting you experience it. Way better suited to the medium.
  • Pix the Cat: What can I say, I love arcade games in any shape or form. I love to lose myself in a very simple world in which only racking up a score and a combo meter matters. And I also liked to play Snake on my phone, and wished someone would give that game a modern spin. Pix is it. First you suck, then you quickly improve your skill and it's awesome, and after a while you're just game after game perfecting your timing and ability to read these levels. I loved it.
  • Talos Principle DLC: The base game is great, its story was alright. But the DLC really elevated the whole game for me. There are not a lot of games about "community", not like Talos Principle. If you ever were part of a real life or online community (if you're reading this, you most certainly are) you'll find ways to connect with this DLC. And having to play the main game first until you get here, is actually a great way to treat yourself to puzzler goodness.
  • Pixeljunk Shooter: Reminded me of games I used to play as a kid, but with some great physics included. You'll direct lava, mix liquids, create smoke and just a lot of interaction with your environments to get through each 2d level with your small rocket. You'll also be fighting creates with a grappling hook and trying to save as many scientists in the process. It's just a brilliant action puzzler! Perfect if you have a Vita (but great looking on PS4 as well of course).

@nessisonett - Eh, did we discuss it? If so, my bad. I have a shockingly poor memory. Definitely agree that the visuals were a real treat, especially the early levels. I really enjoyed the combat too, for a single button system it had surprising depth and a satisfying rhythm to it. Overall I just loved the game for being genuinely different than anything else in it's genre.

@strawhatcrew

1. Stories Path of Destinies was the first game I Platinumed, because I really wanted to see all the endings. Very fun game with a good sense of humor.

2.Transistor is absolutely wonderful, as are all the games from Supergiant.

I am playing Rage 2 right now, and I think it is underrated. I usually want games that have a rich story and this.....is not that. At all. But if you are looking to spend some hours defeating bad guys with a combination of guns and superpowers, it is great fun.

I think a lot of the negativity about this game is in how it was advertised. All of the ads portray this as an open world game full of exploration. So does the box. However, this game is actually pretty firmly on rails: the world is large, but there isn't much going on in between locations. Instead, you go from location to location trying to find creative ways to defeat your enemies-random exploration is not a big part of it. I think people thought they were getting a very open world game and got something much more restricted instead.

But, if you put that aside, there is fun to be had. It seems like a cross between the Mad Max game and Far Cry 3 outposts if you were defeating those outposts with all the guns in the world and super abilities. The story and voice acting won't win any awards, but combat is super fun.

@Kidfried Not only do I love seeing Virginia get a mention, but I'm gonna be playing Psychonauts very soon, as it's finally worked its way up to the "next 3D platformer" position in my backlog. It was tied with Jak 3, but seeing you give it the nod (once again) made the decision for me.

"We want different things, Crosshair. That doesn't mean that we have to be enemies."

@Westernwolf4 I liked the first Rage and thought about getting the 2nd one a few times but reviews were discouraging. I’ll probably still getting at some point. Would make a cool PS+ game but that’s probably not happening now, is it?

Voltan

Kidfried

@RogerRoger I love Jak 3 as well, by the way. Some great childhood memories!

I love when platformers get weird a bit. It's why I love MediEvil and Galaxy 2, both games that aren't afraid to try strange things. And, well, Psychonauts (autocorrect suggested: Psycho aunts) loves strange too.

Days Gone for me! It is one of my favorite games ever. It might be a little long but I love the protagonist and the story is really solid in my opinion. The gameplay is insanely satisfying to me too along with the bike mechanics and there is no better feeling than finally bringing down a big horde. Heavily recommend to anyone who was turned off by the middling reviews or early bugs
