I'm actually playing through the remake of Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter. I'm on chapter 3 now and it's been a magical experience, as to be expected from this series. I've previously played through the Erebonia arc, then the Crossbell arc, then the first game in the Calvard arc and now the Liberl arc. It's weird going backwards, but at the same time I'm glad that I started with Erebonia simply because of the social link (á la Persona) aspect of the first game, which is what got me into this series.
Anyway, it's crazy going from Daybreak to Sky as the former had such a mature tone while the latter is the complete opposite. Sky is really cozy though and I love the characters. In fact, I'd say that this game might just be the funniest one I've played so far.
I'm also glad that the remake expands upon the changes in the gameplay system introduced in Daybreak, i.e. you can fight both real-time and turn-based. So it honestly feels very natural to play these two in this order.
I haven't played the original Sky trilogy on PSP, which I think is a good thing as going into this arc blind makes it very enjoyable. Obviously I know a lot of the characters from the other games, but there are still tons of stuff I didn't know that I'm learning now. Also, the upgraded visuals makes the game way more enjoyable than if I'd played the original games. As I mentioned, I've played through the Crossbell games, which are sprite-based, and they just didn't feel immersive enough compared to the later games. I honestly wouldn't mind if Falcom remade the Crossbell games as well.
Yea I started with Cold Steel 1 and 2, which like you say with the persona style link system got me into the series as a whole. Once I finished 2 I really really wanted to play Cold Steel 3 but I could see where this was going and knew I’d get maximum benefit if I just started the series from the beginning. I have the 1st Remake and I will play it at some point but I didn’t want to wait years for 2 and 3 remake to come out so I played the original Sky trilogy on Steam with the Japanese voice mods, and honestly some of the best RPGs I’ve ever played. So glad you’re enjoying 1st Remake, the story just gets better and better with 2 and 3.
Taking a little break before I fully start Zero but once that and Azure is done I can finally jump into CS 3 and 4 and continue the journey. But what a series man. Almost tops Final Fantasy for me and it’s mainly nostalgia keeping it from over taking for me lol.
@Angelus3K Persona and Trails will always be my two favourite JRPG series. Trails perhaps more so than Persona as there are actually games coming out for this series. I can't believe it's been almost 10 years and we've still not gotten a new Persona game.
I also don't get burned out on Trails despite the frequent releases. It's just nice playing through a JRPG where I'm familiar with the mechanics. It's taken me so long to understand crafts, arts, quartz and so on. Now that I'm better versed with them, I know when I'm getting into a Trails game that I don't have to put in much effort into learning the game's mechanics as the systems are similar. That makes me more inclined to choose a Trails game as my next JRPG to play rather than a completely new series for me.
I think you made a great decision not playing through Cold Steel 3 and 4 yet. I made that mistake and I do regret that I didn't play the Liberl as well as the Crossbell arcs before CS 3 and 4. You will definitely appreciate those games more after experiencing the other two arcs. Not to mention Trails into Reverie later on.
Just finished Sky the 3rd. What a trilogy!!! Well worth playing and holds up extremely well after all these years.
Had a sneak peak at Trails from Zero and looks amazing at 1440p/120fps. Big engine upgrade over the Sky series.
I've decided to to the original trilogy first time through the remakes. Then I'll move on to the original releases of the games that came after.
That’s awesome!! I’ve not played the remakes yet but they look so good. If they’re anything like the originals they will be epic. I hope they do announce Sky 3rd remake once the 2nd is released this year.
I’m currently 60 hours into Trails to Azure and it is just PEAK!!
