@kyleforrester87 Golf Story is another game that has very noticeable lag in docked at least on my tv with the wired Hori pad.

@belmont I didn't notice it so much when I last played it. I'll be looking out for it now, though!

How good is this Hollow Knight, eh? Beaten a few tough bosses, explored a few maps. Hanging out in "Fungal Wastes" now. This is how you make an interesting video game.

@kyleforrester87 How do you find it compares to, say, Axiom Verge? I finished that game a couple of months ago, and it's one of the first metroidvanias I've ever played, and I absolutely adored it. Hollow knight has obviously peaked me interest then, so does it compare favourably to Axiom Verge?

@BranJ0 I loved Axiom Verge and I'd say this is probably better. It is harder and potentially a bit more frustrating (not as obvious where to go next, harder enemies and less forgiving when you die) but all that will depend on the individual as to whether you find it annoying or fun.

The only question mark for me is it's length - yes it's long (30+ hours) with a bunch of DLC but that's not a great thing by default. I'm 7 hours in and still enjoying it a lot but by 25 I might be a bit fed up. Who knows?!

But as it stands right now I'd say it's better than AV and for the price it's a no brainer.

Internet in my home is actually reliable again after changing routers, so I re-ordered Splatoon 2, and, once it gets here, I'll be getting the Octo Expansion!

@BranJ0 Many Metroidvanias I find start getting tiring after 10+ hours for me, but Hollow Knight was pretty enthralling for all of the thirty hours I played of it (just to get the most vanilla ending, mind you). While it's not my all-time favorite game in the genre, it's probably top three. There's just so much quality content here.

But, do keep in mind that I wasn't a huge fan of Axiom Verge. It's better than bottom of the bucket entries in the genre, but it didn't measure up to the Metroid games it largely emulated, imo.

@kyleforrester87 Yeah, I never really play anything where I have noticed lag. Loving Golf Story, I'm pretty busy at the moment and I like the change of pace.

@belmont I thought it seemed a little laggy but it hasn't really affected my performance when docked - might be that I have got used to it for the timings of shots.

Now I may be an idiot, but there's one thing I am not sir, and that sir, is an idiot

@KratosMD @kyleforrester87 Wow, these are glowing reviews! I feel like at how cheap it is I can't really say no this! The gameplay sounds even more interesting than I expected, and I'm a sucker for games with an excellent soundtrack.

@Ralizah I think part of the reason why I might've preferred axiom verge to you was mainly because the only other metroidvania I've played was metroid fusion, I haven't touched any of the others even though I fully intend to soon, so I probably just had lower standards than you considering my limited experience in the genre! Just out of interest, what is your all-time favourite metroidvania?

BranJ0

Ralizah

@BranJ0 For me...

1) Metroid: Zero Mission
2) Shantae and the Pirate's Curse (maybe not technically a Metroidvania, but close enough)
3) Hollow Knight

Metroid Fusion was great, too! Very atmospheric.

The best Metroidvania is God of War

I still want to play Axiom Verge some day! I did play Xeodrifter, and whilst it was very short, it was enjoyable.

The best Metroidvania is Symphony of the Night.

@KratosMD Well it is a remaster of a PS3 game so...

And Octopath is a 16-bit RPG mechanically, and made by the Bravely team, so expect lots of padding.

And Ys VIII doesn't have a demo so its buy and go rather than try first.

At least there is Tales of Vesperia this year? But thats on PS4 so...meh.

@KratosMD Shining looks like a lot of fun to me. The dialogue is pretty hammy, but that's part of the charm. To be honest, I'm looking forward to this more than I am Tales of Vesperia.

Ys VIII is fantastic, but purely on a gameplay/aesthetic level. Story-and-character-wise, it's unremarkable. Which I was expecting, given the developer. I didn't come to the game expecting a memorable story or characters.

I'm waiting on reviews for Octopath. I'll get it eventually either way, but I'm more inclined to get it at launch if it has a good plot and character interaction, which I'm skeptical about on both counts.

@KratosMD Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is fantastic. Really great cast of characters, and the story... I mean, it's not great literature, but I was quite into it.

@Knuckles-Fajita Well, I couldn't get into the first one, which everybody else seemed to love, so I sort of feel you.

@KratosMD I felt like the first Xenoblade Chronicles was a linear JRPG set in a needlessly open world. I wasn't a fan of the approach. XCX, though, is all ABOUT the open world, and Chronicles 2 more justifies the open world approach by having more stuff to find and do in it. Better side-quests, blade quests to complete, more stuff to do with materials you collect, affinity chart grinding, etc.

@Knuckles-Fajita XCX is great, but it needs a bit more guidance early on, needed to streamline some of its systems a bit, and needed to provide a more reliable way to heal your characters. And not make you have to go to specific locations to switch characters. Oh, and I don't like most of the characters, but that hardly matters, does it?

Still better than Xenoblade 1, though, imo.

@Knuckles-Fajita What do you prefer about XBX compared to 2? I've only played the first one.
