Topic: Some Thoughts and Questions

First I'd like to say hello.  I've visited NintendoLife for a few years now but haven't checked out PushSquare until yesterday after bringing home a shiny new Vita.  I bought Uncharted GA and an 8 gig memory card and would like to share some thoughts if you care to listen.

To begin, I should probably mention that I also own a Wii, 3DS and PS3 as well as a PC, iPad and iPhone.  I bought the Vita mostly because of some long car rides coming up in the not so distant future and a lack of new 3DS games until August and Christmas.

Uncharted is a lot of fun and it is amazing what the developers were able to achieve graphically on a handheld.  However, and I'm probably in the minority on this, I think some 3DS games look better.  Why?.. because of the art styles.  The Vita is very powerful but not as powerful as the PS3 and it shows.  Golden Abyss' graphics will not stand the test of time while something like Super Mario 3D Land will just because of the art styles.  I guess the point I'm trying to make is that I hope developers will try to be more stylistic rather than realistic in the future.  Judging only by the trailers, games like Escape Plan and LBP look more or less as good as they possibly can given their styles.  Still, Uncharted's graphics leave leave no doubt that the Vita is much more powerful than the 3DS and even iPad (though who knows 2 or 3 years down the line).

But enough about graphics, Uncharted's gameplay is solid.  Being able to draw a line for Drake to follow is really cool.  I find the analog sticks to be more difficult to use for aiming than the PS3's controller but being able to fine tune your shots by moving the system is a great addition.  Using the gyroscope to balance Drake and when sniping also feels great.  Some things like rubbing the dirt off of items come off more as gimmicks but also add variety nonetheless.  It's all a lot of fun buy I wouldn't say it stands up to the best of the 3DS which leads me to my next point...

Games!  The Vita seemed to have a good launch line up, much better than the 3DS', but is still lacking that killer app.  Months ago, I thought that was going to be Gravity Rush, but apparently not (I'm still planning on picking it up anyways).  The 3DS found its killer app during its first Christmas, what about will the Vita have come this holiday?  There's Assassins Creed, a game we have very little details on and could go either way.  What else (and I'm talking about exclusives)?  As far as I know, there aren't any... at least nothing major.  However, I doubt that is actually the case and I'm looking forward to seeing what Sony will announce at TGS later this year.  I'm also looking forward to Bioshock though that sounds like a ways off.

So anyways... time for some questions.

Do you like Uncharted GA's realistic graphics or would you prefer a more stylized approach too?  What about the touch/motion controls, love them or hate them?

What games are you looking forward to and what are you hoping will be announced?  What are your favorite games right now and any that you would suggest to me (I prefer single player games)?  What are your thoughts on Gravity Rush if you've played it?  And any other thoughts you want to share?

Congratulations, you made it to the bottom of this post.  I look forward to reading your comments

I think for Uncharted, I prefer it's realistic graphics. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy games with their own stylistic design in graphics, but when it comes to Uncharted, I don't think it'd FEEL like an uncharted series without realism.

I'm greatly looking forward to Persona 4. I've only played Persona 3 a little but love the series so far. Another is Ragnarok Odyssey... it's been out since launch (I think?) in Japan and looks awesome. PSOII is a given, but I'm iffy as I haven't REALLY enjoyed a Phantasy Star since Ep 1 and 2 on Dreamcast. Speaking of, Jet Grind Radio will be AWESOME for Vita I'm guess. It's the prefect game for a handheld with the perfect design for an OLED touchscreen.

In terms of games not yet officially announced (or possibly not even in the works). I'd love a Gran Turismo, Monster Hunter, and Final Fantasy on my Vita.

Finally and mostly: There were a lot of solid rumors that Sonic Adventure 2 was coming to the PSN/XBLA. If they made this for Vita.. oohhhhhhhhh man. It's one of my all time favorite games!

Welcome nickcarney. Would you prefer to have UGA with Mario style graphics or with the main characters being Miis with the story running at Whuhu island? Do you like the style Lord of the rings (the film), or not because it looks too realistic?
GR is not my cup of tea (just because its style), but worth buying for sure.

Uncharted GA looks amazing. Any game on any system can be accused of 'not standing the test of time' graphically, but that's eye of the beholder stuff. It will stand the test of time as a launch game. The same way Resistance FOM does. Just because a game's dated doesn't automatically make it bad looking. This is also true for 'stylised' games. mario 64 for example looks a mess of polygons by todays standards, but it great for an N64 game. It's all about context.

I'd much rather play Uncharted as it is, with the style of it's series very much intact. Besides, who in their right mind would produce a sequel (prequel) to one of the biggest, most adored and profitable games franchises going and change the art style completely?

I find your iPad point moot really, eventual better graphics or not- touch gaming alone is terrible for anything other than your Angry Birds type thing, and I'm yet to see a point of owning a tablet other than having a very expensive portable web browser.

Hey guys

I was looking into Ragnorak Odyssey before, it definitely does look like fun.  I was also checking out Persona 4, do you know if its story stands by itself or if I would have to play the first 3 to enjoy it?

As for what I would have wanted from Uncharted, I agree it needs to look realistic and no, not like Mario.  I was thinking more Kingdoms of Amular and less Skyrim.  I'm not against realism at all, but I am when it doesn't work.  LotR holds up great, GA is already looking dated.  I don't like the sacrifices that have to be made when developing in this style.  Things like fire appearing pixelated, small things you may not have even noticed.  I do think that making it too stylistic would have made it not feel like Uncharted, I was talking mostly about future original games.  And rather than looking at Mario 64, look at Wind Waker and Skyward Sword, both look great despite being on dated hardware.

Also, I wasn't trying to claim that future iPads would be better than Vita for gaming and truthfully it will probably take more than 2 or 3 iterations for them to catch up.  However, iPads are decent gaming devices when considering games built around touch.  Look at Plants Vs Zombies, all touch (and on Vita)... A good game despite not using buttons.  They're all more or less casual though, as there aren't any deep experiences like Uncharted to be found on the iPad, but that doesn't mean they are bad games.

The fire issue is barely worth noting condsidering the rest of the game. Have you played the first Uncharted? If you still have it compare the two, and remember that one of them is on a handheld.

I think that if Naughty Dog had developed GA then it would probably look even better, but BEND have done a great job.

The first Uncharted had its share of problems, screen tearing, frame rate, etc. and I was just nitpicking.  Make the graphics too cartoony and it might not feel like Uncharted, and Bend succeeded in making it feel like its older brothers.  I don't care much about graphics, gameplay is what matters and again I was mostly talking about future, original games.

Speaking of which, and to answer one of my own questions, I'm hoping for a big western RPG to play on my new handheld.  Maybe something to coincide with the release of Fallout 4, that would be great.  A perfect way to complement Pokemon 3DS I'll inevitably end up buying.

Moving back to stylistic graphics, the game I'm looking forward to the most is Bioshock Vita.  Do we have any details on that.  I doubt it will come out this year but maybe like with Assassins Creed, it will come out the same time as Infinite.  That would be awesome.

I've read a few places that the Persona series is much like Final Fantasy. The numbers don't really have anything to do with anything other than release so you should be golden even without playing any others.

That's great, thank you!  I'm now much more interested in it

In terms of graphics, I find it hard to fault U:GA on that on the basis that it may not stand up to scrutiny in the future. I agree that SM3DL's art style is iconic enough to delay that criticism, I don't think that graphics and art style are one and the same. Also, don't play U:GA after you just decided to revisit U3D. Makes the game harder to look at, despite its graphical flair

On another note, I'm definitely looking forward to P4G. It is literally my most anticipated game, on any console, bar none. And to answer your question @nickcarney; while the plot of the games are standalone, unlike the FF series they exist in the same universe and small trivial things are mentioned  about the previous installments in the later games. Makes it a nicer experience for people who've played the previous games.

Speaking of previous games, P3P is on the PSN for $10. Phenomenal game and it feels right at home on the Vita (except with the graphics). Definitely should pick that up if you're interested in Persona.
