Topic: Does anyone one else think remote play is terrible and broken?

I read so much about remote working great for so many people, yet it the best I've ever gotten out of it is it barley working with a ton of skips and then having it crash on me. I just tried to use on the low resolution settings, and it failed completely. Trying to connect through the Internet was worthless, and direct connect doesn't work beyond five feet of my PS4, and it'd be generous to say it does work within five feet. It's a lag fest for a few seconds, then crashes. I've had this experience, more or less, everytime I've ever used remote play, and this is with two vitas. Has anyone else had this experience, and does anyone have any fixes for it?

It works fine for me but I use a PS TV and it's hardwired. No way would I think of doing it on wi-fi.

Forget about using it meaningfully over wifi. It's perfect on my local network when I'm in the same room, and fine in the next room, but across the flat it starts getting ropey.

Honestly it's only really for when you're still sitting on the sofa but someone else wants to use the TV imo.

I agree, remote play for the most part is broken, those who speak highly of it have either never actually utilized it, or are sitting 5 feet in front of the console.

I'm surprised by how many people bring up remote play without saying how subpar it is.

@sub12: @Jaz007: @Tasuki: I actually lent my friend my PSTV so he could remote on and play my PS4 whilst I'm at work. He lives about 10 miles away from me and was using wifi. He played like this every day for nearly a month and found it very reliable.

However despite that, I can be sat in my own house and have issues on my PSTV or my vita!!!

I used to use it frequently. It's a great feature, but you are right that it's flawed. Even wireless on a different network it worked at an acceptable degree for some games though. I used to remote in and play Final Fantasy XIV. I'd sometimes do a dungeon here and there, but I primarily did minor stuff like gathering or crafting. I think the praise comes with a 'reasonable' degree of expectations. On something like a 25/5 (Mbit down/up) connection, it's going to chug at best. Same is true if you're using wifi on your PS4. Even on my old 50/20 network, I had some issues from time to time. On my 1,000/500 connection, I RARELY have issues when connecting from outside connections with at least 10/1.

Being limited to Wireless G isn't really good enough for a seamless experience. It's not the speed limits ( a horrible ~7MBps at it's very unrealistic best) that cause issue, it's that 2.4GHz is horribly over crowded in most areas. It's also not great at processing more than one connection. This is probably the biggest hurdle for remote play.

That said, my PlayStation TV over my home gigabit network is awesome. I still wouldn't want to play Black Ops 3 MP over remote play, but it's good enough for just about anything else.

TL;DR: Works very well if the host/source networks are both up to the task. Tons of factors make it awful though.

@sub12: Maybe those people are genuinely having no problem with it? It was never a hugely marketed feature because people would expect it to work brilliantly wherever they are in the world. It's for local play, much like you would with the Wii U controller while the TV is in use, or at best in the next room or garden. And in my experience its basically flawless in these scenarios. If it works fine for people in other scenarios, even better.

connecting over wi-fi internet is a problem, but as for connecting wirelessly to the PS4 itself i have NEVER had a problem with it, although i only use it when someone else want's the TV so i am in the same room as the PS4

As I said mine is a PSTV and it's hardwired, I have it in my bedroom so when someone else wants to use the tv I can play my game either that or if I just feel like being in my room. I will say I have never used it for multiplayer, mostly single player games like Diablo 3, TWD, Mega Man Legacy Collection, and a few others. I never tried it with games like Rocket League or Drive Club.
