@timleon Honestly, I’m not a big fan of Persona 4’s cast anyway. Kanji’s about the only one that I really cared about. Well, other than Dojima and Nanako.
@nessisonett@timleon Kanji is probably Troy Baker’s best role. That or Joel inTLoU or maybe Booker Dewitt in BioShock Infinite. A lot of other roles he sounds kinda like himself... (See Delsin Rowe, Higgs, Snow, Bruce Wayne, Samuel Drake, ... etc, etc.)

Perhaps an unpopular opinion that I was just thinking about yesterday, as a franchise Sonic the Hedgehog is just not very good overall. Of all the games they've released over the decades really only a few are actually great, fun to play games. The cartoons were cool as a kid and the recent movie was surprisingly decent but as a whole there's much much more bad Sonic content than good.
Honestly, some of the more popular "waifu" choices do nothing for me. In addition to Chie, Naoto doesn't appeal to me (Though her interactions with Kanji are fun), I like Makoto but I don't get the massive appeal, Futaba is too much like a cringey corporate interpretation of gamers for me to like (Also the idea of romancing her after playing the game felt weird), Kawakami makes me uncomfortable, Takemi's ok. Just ok.

OH GOD HE SPOKE NEGATIVELY ABOUT SONIC THE HEDGEHOG. RULE 1 OF THE INTERNET IS NEVER SPEAK NEGATIVELY ABOUT A DIVISIVE FRANCHISE ON A PUBLIC INTERNET FORUM
@OrigamiCrane I overall enjoy the cast of P5, but if anyone's played 3 & 4 it's harder to ignore that they share too many similarities with the casts from other games. There's some things about P5's cast I like more than their other equivalents, but they don't feel as fresh as they should.
Silent protags don't bug me as much as they should, but if they're gonna be heavily involved I do wish there was more of a character. At least give me the illusion of personality by having voice acted lines.
Makoto's confidant sucks. It's far less about her than the others, and I don't really learn a lot about her as a result. It was definitely not worth the social stats needed. Ann's sucks too, if only because I'm supposed to feel somewhat sympathetic to a character I wish was a Mementos target instead.

@DerMeister I can't say I agree, to be honest. But then again, I've only played 4 and 5. Morgana is very clearly building on what they had with Teddie (with the former being a lot less annoying, in my opinion). For the others...there are maybe some parallels between Yosuke and Ryuji, and at a stretch some elements shared between Yukiko and Ann/Haru, and Chie and Futuba...maybe? Idk this is from the top of my head.
I do agree that it's a shame some of the PT confidants didn't go deeper into their characters, especially Makoto's. I think Makoto is a great character with some interesting story arcs, but we actually see very little of her actual relationship with Joker in-game IMO.
I can't say I agree about the voice acting. I feel giving the protagonist more voice lines would disrupt immersion in the life-sim aspects of the game.
@timleon It’s a lot more noticeable if you’ve played 3, 4 and 5. You can group them even. Junpei, Yosuke, Ryuji. Yukari, Chie, Ann. Fuuka, Yukiko, Haru. Akihiko, Naoto, Makoto. Even Aigis, Teddie and Morgana share fairly similar arcs. I love the Persona games but I’d definitely like to see characters be a bit more original in the next game. Perhaps not a ‘loyal yet perverted best friend’, ‘mascot character’ etc. I know there are only a few high school anime tropes they can wheel out but the characters in games like Shin Megami Tensei 5 aren’t afraid to be a bit different.
@nessisonett Perhaps...but looking at your match-ups I can't help but think any similarities are superficial (e.g. what links Chie and Ann other than being the first girl that you recruit?). And I think it's inevitable having a balanced cast of characters in a similar setting (a Japanese high school), you're going to have some similar character archetypes.
I agree having a a silent protagonist in a story heavy game like Persona is a poor choice.
I'd compare it to Mass Effect 2. Commander Shepard being voice acted makes the experience a lot more immersive and memorable.
Having this so called inspirational leader you can't hear is definitely a weak point in an otherwise great series. It just doesn't make sense.
@Foxy-Goddess-Scotchy Yeah, there is probably some attraction to having the big name VA recognizable, but for the handful of popular VA it can get tedious.
I’ve been playing TT Guardians of the Galaxy and Nolan North voices Rocket, and sounds almost identical to Bradley Cooper. It took me a while to realize it was North. On the contrary, the VA for Star Lord (Scott Porter) really doesn’t sound or act like Chris Pratt. I’m not sure what leeway these actors have to make the role their own.
As for Miss Kashiwagi... I had forgotten about her. She was a very funny character though, who probably didn’t get enough screen time. 😄 I’ll agree she was a better teacher character than Kawakami in P5.

@Foxy-Goddess-Scotchy I really liked the social link in Persona 4 with Ai, as she showed more depth than a lot of other characters. Her social link also was a lot better at showing how the main character has a gift for reaching people, compared to other ones where they were just pleasant people with 1 problem that you solve.
