@THEBrew @BearsEatBeets I'm thankful I've managed to avoid the ad-based tiers for now, but I guess it's only a matter of time before the ad free tiers get prohibitively expensive.
22 minute show with 4-5 minutes of ads? Closing in on the "classic" US network model, then. A "half-hour" show was 20-22 minutes and the remaining 8 to 10 was filled with ads and other noise. Don't know if it's still the case as I haven't been to the US for many a year, but I expect very little has changed (and certainly not for the better).

@FuriousMachine Do you think the Spiderman you showed me a couple of months ago is still coming? I haven't seen anyone mention it and I've checked a couple of Streaming services but never found it. It was black and white, that's why I wanted to see it.

@THEBrew I've never seen an advert on a Streaming service but I frequently bounce VPNs, maybe that affects it. Prime and Netflix would be UK by default, maybe there are tiers for the subscription? Someone else handles mine so I have no idea, I didn't even know adverts were a thing on there.

@GirlVersusGame Absolutely, Spider-Noir premieres on MGM+ on May 25th and hopefully on other internationally available streaming services at the same time or shortly thereafter

@GirlVersusGame Both Prime and Netflix have ads at the basic subscription level. As far as I know that is standard across most if not all of the streaming services. I don't subscribe to all of them, so can't say for for sure.

I was on the top level on Netflix when they introduced ads, so have never experienced them. On Prime and YouTube, I didn't last too long until I ponied up to get rid of ads.

Life is more fun when you help people succeed, instead of wishing them to fail.

Been having a great time with Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 recently. Can't wait to see where they're gonna take last week's cliffhanger, and the production quality is through the roof. It always was before, but there have been some next-level sequences lately.

@Werehog Great to hear; looking forward to picking that back up - Lady Mariko x Godzilla x Kong is absolutely my jam, but the introduction of a Norwegian Netflix show that not only doesn't suck but is actually pretty damn good (at least by Norwegian standards) has monopolised my TV viewing recently. Only two episodes left of "Detective Hole" and I'm off to the world of Monarch
(as an aside, I know perfectly well that "Hole" is the name of the protagonist and is pronounced hoo-leh, but whenever I refer to the show in Norwegian I refer to it as if it was a direct translation of "The Detective-Hole", because it makes me giggle)

FuriousMachine

Werehog

@FuriousMachine Yeah, I'm not sure we should be discussing a "Detective Hole" on a family forum!

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters continues to be great fun. This week's episode had some brilliant scenes. My only criticism is that it's a little too obvious that it got hacked apart and re-assembled in the post-production editing suite; there's a lot of ADR plastered over reaction shots and B-roll, but it all hangs together well enough. And while the Titan budget has most definitely seen a substantial increase, the show still works as the place where the MonsterVerse can preserve its decent human characters and storylines, freeing up the movies to come along and be the popcorn spectacle that they are.

I also caught the first two episodes of the latest Star Wars show, Maul: Shadow Lord. Some really great stuff right out of the gate, presenting itself as more of a mobster detective thriller than anything else, drawing from shades of Gotham City in its set-up. Quality voice cast and lots of promise, even if its ultimate destination is a fixed point, and it's hands down the best-looking animated show I have ever seen.

"If I let not knowing anything stop me from doing something, I'd never do everything!"

FuriousMachine

@Werehog You're right, we should think of the children and avoid discussing any Detective Hole on here. I'll just leave it with saying that the one on Netflix was quite good and refer back to my earlier post with impressions and trailer for the Detective Hole curious out there.

Glad to hear that Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is holding up! To be honest, as long as Miss Sawai is there to mesmerise me they could all be acting in front of a backdrop painted by pre-schoolers for all I care
The arrival of The Boys threatened to throw my plans for catching up on "Monarch" into disarray, but I've managed to catch the first three episodes of the latter nonetheless. Realised that the movie, Rental Family (which I watched again last night) contained a "Monarch" reunion of sorts, as Mari Yamamoto and Takehiro Hira appear in both (and does excellent work in both).

I've been seeing a lot of superlatives for Maul: Shadow Lord so I will absolutely be checking out that one soon. "Mobster detective thriller" sounds like something I'd enjoy, especially now that there's a Detective Hole (sorry - last time, I swear) shaped hole in my viewing schedule (which awaits new seasons of Sugar, Ballard and the debut of Spider-Noir to fill it).

  • Brilliant thanks, I couldn't find it online or elsewhere. I wasn't sure if it was just a Pilot or a fully fleshed out series. It would be good to have a show to drop some feedback on and I imagine that will be a popular one. The graphic novel was really good, if it captures even half of that then it will be a winner. I feel like I've been saying I'm going to watch Alien Earth for a year now, the same for season two of DareDevil. Then there's Stranger Things which now four people have recommended, I dropped The Simpsons around maybe season five or six. It wasn't at all bad, I think it's a culture thing and a timing thing. The exception was the Treehouse of Terrors, I watched maybe thirty of those in a compilation, they did lose steam half way in. All of the classic movies/stories were addressed in the first few specials, after that it got kind of ridiculous. I liked the Poltergeist one where 'life with the Simpsons?' then the house pretty much teleported itself away. Cape Fear was a good one too and the one with a robot voiced by Pierce Brosnan, the Nightmare on Elm Street one too.

I got through maybe three seasons of Friends, about the same for SouthPark, I think Futurama is next I've been hearing good things about that. I gave up on Game of Thrones, it was very good just kind of depressing because everyone dies even the wolves. I finished Black Books too, I have to watch Red Dwarf too, both are British comedies. Watching Bill Bailey eat that tiny Book of Calm was just brilliant and Dylan Moran is just funny even as a person.

Watched the latest episode of...

It was great. Top 5 episodes ever! Can't wait for season finale. I also need to start The Boys new season and DD: Born Again S02 too.

Another genre, if you like dramedies give Rooster a chance. It's fun.

@Scottyy I started watching Invincible a couple of years ago but just stopped. I can't remember why because I was enjoying it. I do plan to go back to it sometime soon.

Good to see someone else liking Rooster. I stumbled onto it a few weeks ago and started it not realising it was so new that it was still releasing weekly. I've loved it so far but not surprising when it's got Bill Lawrence (Ted Lasso, Scrubs) behind it.

@BearsEatBeets

I don't know where were you last but 3rd season was good with a great finale. 4th season was going fine but last 2 episode upped the ante a lot! I recommend going back, other than mediocre 2nd season, it's a fun show.

Rooster is comfort show. Latest episode's ending was crazy! Laughed my head off. Also, I recommended Shrinking too, same creator. But you can leave it after 1st season, it doesn't go anywhere after that finale.

Scottyy

BearsEatBeets

@Scottyy I think I was still in the first season when I stopped but maybe once the whole set is out I'll go through them all.

I've not watched this weeks Rooster yet but thinking of doing that right now.

I've heard about Shrinking but I don't have Apple TV. I do plan to resub at some point to see the second season of Silo so I will give that a try when that happens.

EDIT: Just watched Rooster and you were right about the ending 😄.

Yeah, definetely check the series again. It's fun even though not a masterpiece or anything. Yeah, Rooster ending was crazy!

Speaking of Shrinking

S03

Well, just like S02; this too felt unnecessary overall. I don't think this series needed more after Season 1. Nothing they did felt totally necessary to show. Also I didn't like how not-funny it got since Season 1. I laugh so little compared to before. Episode 7th was the best since I laughed a lot in that. Finale was a good closure I feel. We really don't need anymore of this world tbh.

@FuriousMachine I'll check out 7 days - just did a quick check and the cast list is insane! (Jon Hamm... Michael Sheen... Karen Gillan!)
OK so Industry isn't quite as malicious as Succession, and there are genuinely a few characters to root for, but it might not be for you. Give it a whirl and watch the first couple, if it doesn't click then give it a miss mate

I'm only now watching Industry season 3, but so far the season (and the series as a whole is amazing). For me it's up there with series like The Sopranos. There's a lot to unpack in each episode, and I love how the series doesn't spend time on trying to make sure the viewer understands it. Instead it trusts I'm able to distill some meaning from each episode on my own.

Amazing stuff.

I've done a little binging over the last two weeks to catch up with some TV shows, so I'll drop some short thoughts here.

Shrinking - Season 3: Another delightful season that has cemented the show as one of my favourite comedies of all time. It's just a pitch-perfect ensemble that all work so well together in any configuration. The writing is on-point, it's hilarious, the heavy moments hit exactly as hard as they need to... and to my surprise, Harrison Ford remains the stand-out amongst them all. I never thought I'd live in a world where I'd be over the moon by a Harrison Ford performance, but here I am ready to shower him with flowers. Just incredible stuff on his part and everyone else's. I'm delighted to see that it's been renewed for yet another season, even if this season would've been a perfect ending point had it not been. The final scene between Paul and Jimmy was amazing and had me bawling. This show keeps knocking it out of the park time and time again.

Hazbin Hotel - Season 2: I was a big fan of the first season, but this one was a bit of a letdown unfortunately. The songs weren't quite up to par, the pacing was sloggish and it generally just had a less interesting hook for this season's premise than the first. That said, it all came together in the end with a great finale. The big musical number with all the characters at the end was delightful and one of the best songs in the show. Another finale moment that had me bawling for a second there. I'm really interested to see where the show goes with its next season. Hopefully we finally get a proper introduction to Lilith after it has been teased over the course of these last two seasons. The voice work still remains stellar throughout though. Christian Borle really stepped up to the plate as the main antagonist this season especially.

Matlock - Season 2: Another case of a very entertaining first season that had a bit of a sophomore slump. I don't think the slump was as deep as with Hazbin however, since I didn't feel bored at any point. I just think the way the character dynamics evolved between the first and second season made for a less thrilling ride, and that the main plotline that was originated in the show's premise took too long to get to a satisfying end. I'm glad they wrapped the Wellbrexa arc up with this season's finale as it was long overdue. At least they managed to nail the landing, with a perfect finale to sign off on that storyline on. It has put them into an interesting position of what's next. There's no clear thread to follow up on, so they have free range to come up with an interesting premise for the future seasons. I have full faith in this creative team to come up with something as equally twisting and exciting as Wellbrexa was at first, so I'll be tuning in again next season for sure.

Aside from that, I've started catching up on The Pitt's second season and Pluribus. Only two episodes into the former so far, which remains a very well-crafted watch, even if I don't think it really reaches any amazing heights. It's hard to deny the craftsmanship on display from the writing to the acting to the pacing, and that's what makes it so endlessly watchable despite never really going beyond that feeling of: ''it's good''! I'm still excited to watch more. As for the latter, I'm four episodes in now and it's winner after winner. I have still no clue what this season's eventual conclusion will be, but I'm totally in for the ride. Rhea Seehorn is (as expected) a great lead and Karolina Wydra has cemented herself as the perfect foil. Intrigued to see where it's going as always. No doubt I'll finish the season within the next week.

Spent a very action-packed morning yesterday wrapping up Monarch: Legacy of Monsters and Maul: Shadow Lord and am pleased to report that they both stuck their landings, with the former managing to raise the "live action spectacle" bar set by the Stranger Things finale while the latter mashed all of its action figures together in the best, most chaotic ways possible. Looking forward to more!

Daredevil: Born Again - season 2: Really enjoyed it as with the previous seasons, though not sure I was as into the overall story arc as much this time. It was okay but the action and brutality just seemed next level this season… and Bullseye… I ****ing love Bullseye! I’ve loved the shows depiction of him since he first turned up in season 3 but in this season he goes full Bullseye. I’d watch a Bullseye show not gonna lie.

Legends - Excellent show! Best thing I’ve seen on Netflix since Stranger Things and best British show I’ve seen since Slow Horses.

I haven't posted much in the way of thoughts or recommendations in a while as I'm assuming it is of very limited interest, but I couldn't in good conscience let Apple TV's new series Widow's Bay go unmentioned.
When it saw the amount of "bad s#!t" going on in Stephen King's Maine town of Castle Rock, the little island town of Widow's Bay said "hold my beer". The town is only accessible by ferry, has absolutely no mobile reception and is populated almost exclusively by quirky and weird characters - though not full on Twin Peaks weird, more like Northern Exposure weird - with a only smattering of normal-ish people among them.
Matthew Rhys plays the town's mayor who's intent on bringing in the tourism dollars, despite the island's history of... "troubles", let's say.
Horror comedy is hard to pull off, all too often one suffers at the hands of the other, but this one manages to be at times genuinely funny and genuinely creepy at others.

I've seen the first three episodes and I highly recommend it. Unless it completely falls off a cliff in later episodes, I think this is a winner.
