I'm watching Mythic Quest, and is it really weird to actually see Ashley Burch play a live action character! 😂 It took me a few episodes for it to click which character she was playing, but then I recognised her voice.

@Th3solution Spider-verse is still number one for me but I would probably place Arcane in second spot for best looking Western animation. The characters and story's pretty good too. Really looking forward to the next season.
For anyone that prefers physical media, House of Dragon is coming, including to 4K blu ray in Dec 19th. I've already added it to my rental list, along with a bunch of other shows only available on SKY/NOW TV here in the UK.

Finished watching season 2 of Doom Patrol. While I'm enjoying the show a lot, I just don't understand what they're doing with it. Why are we still seeing backstories for each character all the way into the second season? I feel like this show is more about learning about the characters rather than having a compelling plot with backstories for the characters on the side. It just feels pointless to learn about characters if there's no an overarching plot tied to them. Not to mention the weird cliffhanger in the season finale.
It's still a fun show to watch but it's so clearly a show without a focus.
@KilloWertz Moving the question over here for tidiness sake —
So how are you finding Rings of Power? I really enjoyed it (as you can tell with the Arondir gif). I think the Tolkien purists were put off by its wavering from established lore apparently. But I feel like they did a great job with the material they had. Now I’m just bummed it will be so long until the next season.

@Th3solution I think I'm only 3 episodes in so far, but so far so good. I wasn't floored by the first episode, but it's picked up for me since. It's not that the first episode was bad, but the scene with them just blindly sailing the boat into the light was a bit weird. Maybe I missed something somehow, but it was weird.
I don't mind that it's different or that it will never have the characters from the movies. I knew that going in, but while I really enjoyed the movies, it's not like I watch them religiously or anything. I also haven't read a book since I was in school (so multiple decades). I could treat it like the Arrowverse shows on The CW where I could say it's set in another Middle Earth universe.

I think they tried to make the show as approachable as possible for casual fans but it is more meaningful if you know and remember the lore and people from the base LotR movies/books.
It’s not really spoilers but I’ll tag it anyways, but in the original movies and books you’ll recall —
In addition to the One Ring, 19 rings of power were forged. 3 rings for the elves, 7 to the dwarves, and 9 to the kingdom of men. Of course the 9 ring bearing men become the Nazgul or Ringwraiths that chase Frodo around in the movies. You’ll recall one of the elf rings goes to Galadriel and I think one to Elrond too. The 7 dwarf rings I don’t know that we hear or see much about in the original movie or books but clearly the fall of Moria and the underground kingdom is coming eventually, we saw it overrun with orcs in the movie.
So obviously, knowing how Elrond and Galadriel turn out is helpful for context, and who Isuldur ends up becoming (he cuts the One Ring from Sauron’s hand during the war), and Celebrimdor is mentioned in the original movies as the one who forged the rings, so getting to meet him is key here.
As far as the ship sailing into the light, it’s a callback to the very end of the movies, where Elves go off into some version of their afterlife or resting place. Clearly Galadriel wasn’t ready to go yet.
Anyways, supposedly a lot of what the TV show does with the characters and lore is not fully accurate with Tolkien’s extended writings. But it fits with the movie, which is what most people want, so I think your approach is good for thinking of it like an Arrowverse for the LotR properties.

@HallowMoonshadow Yes, I finished Arcane and just loved it. It’s one of the, if not the, favorite Netflix original show I’ve seen. Totally agree on the art and animation - stunning. And you’re right about the voice acting. And also right about the music - I’m torn as to whether I can give the musical score a thumbs up. Let’s face it, it’s cool to hate on Imagine Dragons because of their popularity and pandering to the lowest common denominator, but their stuff is catchy. But yes, the utilization of music could have been better because although I don’t remember specifically the sequence in the second episode, there was more than once during the series that I was put off by the background music they used.
My only other issue with it was the jumping and skipping of large sections of time. I know that’s part of what makes the show great too, but some clearer transition might have also helped when going from one episode to the next. I think it was a conscious stylistic choice to just jump forward like that without any fanfare, but it was also jarring and took several minutes to get one’s bearings.
Overall, it’s fabulous though. Really glad a second season is coming. I forget, did you ever watch Love, Death, and Robots? I’ve mentioned it before but you’ll probably like some of the animation in that series if you liked this.
And I’m glad to see House of Dragons hit for you. I need to finish Game of Thrones. I stopped somewhere in season 3 or 4; I just ran out of interest when I started hearing how poorly the series ended. Knowing this new one is good will help motivate me to return.

there’s just the one major time skip. I guess it feels like several because each subplot skips ahead, so you have to piece together in your mind what happened with each subgroup of people. So there’s like 3 or 4 plotlines that you have to suss out and connect the dots of how these people got to be in this position 5 yrs later, so it seems like 4 different time skips 😅. The vagueness of what’s going on makes the reveal of Vi in prison at the end of that episode really hit well though. I loved that moment.
But it was a really huge jump from the innocent and awkward Powder transformed into a bitter and ruthless mad genius Jinx. Making up in your own mind how she got to be delusional and unhinged is, like I say, obviously an artistic choice by the writers, but it was… well to borrow your word, jarring.
There was also the time incongruence with the crippled scientist character (was it Viktor?) where he just kind of dropped into the plot line and they told his backstory in a slightly confusing way. It was disjointed for a character that ended up being pretty important. So I think that was another of the “time jumps” that I think was a bit too drastic
Gosh, I make it sound like I didn’t like the show, but obviously I’m being nit-picky because I thought it was brilliant. 😄
And I’ll be interested to hear how you get along with Edgerunners and LD&R. I almost started Edgerunners myself, and just might do that soon as well.
Been awhile since I posted in here, but a couple of weeks ago I finished up Outlaw Star (Blu-Ray).
I've seen it twice before now, once as a kid on Toonami, then online somewhere over a decade ago. For whatever reason it has never managed to stick in my consciousness like my other big childhood/teenage anime (InuYasha, Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, Tenchi Muyo, etc.), however the one mental note that's stuck with me is that it's "awesome"...
Watching it all these years later on Blu-Ray I can confirm it is indeed awesome & I can't for the life of me understand why it hasn't stuck (with me). I absolutely love the spacefaring adventure vibe, killer music, awesome action, & more. Heck, I even really looked forward to those little lore dumps that kick-started each episode. I think it struggles a bit at the end in giving everyone something climactic to do (Aisha probably gets shafted the hardest with her "quick single clash against rando tornado guy" fight), but I ultimately think it manages to stick the landing.

@Th3solution You're getting too old for this stuff I guess.
Ok, you whole boat things makes more sense when you put it that way. Like I said, it came off weird in the first episode, but that's because I missed/forgot about the reference.
Maybe I'll get some of the references at some point, as like I also said, I have watched all the movies at least twice. I'm sure I'll like it in the end.

@Thrillho
The early seasons of Always Sunny are only rough because they had a nonexistent budget to work with. Especially in the first season, I think they spent something like 400,000 for the entire season when even your most low budget of American tv shows still cost at least a million per episode.
Edit: Okay I was misremembering details, It was 400,000 per episode (the pilot was literally shot for nothing) but that is still less than a third the industry standard.
Think that series of Babylon Berlin was the best one yet. It’s just consistently one of the best shows on TV. I wish more people would give it a go, the fact it’s in German does tend to put people off, but I think Das Boot did pretty well so I’d assume there are at least a few people who don’t mind subtitles.
@PegasusActual93@QualityGeezer Babylon Berlin’s on Sky so we’ve been watching it through NowTV. Think it’s maybe funded by Sky Deutschland, I know Das Boot is for sure.
